Gainesville-  Former Gators player and coach Steve Spurrier is returning to the University with a new title. Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley announced the news Friday.
Spurrier will become the new ambassador and consultant for Florida Athletics.

“It’s a great day for the Gator Nation to be able to welcome Coach Spurrier back home,” Foley said. “He has served as a tremendous ambassador to the University and the athletic department for fifty plus years.”

Spurrier has been a Gator since 1963 when he enrolled at UF on a football scholarship. Spurrier is originally from Johnson City, Tennessee.

UF announced this summer that Spurrier’s name will appear on the football stadium as it will now be Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
