Gainesville, FL– #2 Florida once again asserted it’s dominance on their in-state rivals from Tallahassee. The Gators used a pair of homers from Jonathan India and an all-around offensive explosion to storm past the Seminoles 12-6 on Tuesday.
Florida (16-3) trailed by a 4-1 tally headed into the bottom of the third, but erupted over the next few innings. The Gators scored a pair of runs in the third. Nelson Maldonado singled in Nick Horvath and Wil Dalton scored on a JJ Schwarz groundout to cut the deficit to one.
Florida’s offense batted around in the fifth inning and scored seven runs. Austin Langworthy led off the inning with a double into the right-center field gap. Dalton followed by working a walk. Maldonado then loaded the bases with a single just past the Seminoles shortstop. Schwarz just missed hitting a grand slam as the ball was tracked down at the warning track, but that was plenty far for Langworthy to score to tie the game at 4. Jonathan India was then hit by a pitch which again loaded the bases. Deacon Liput hit a slow grounder to second that scored Dalton. Blake Reese was hit by a pitch, yet again loading the bases. Keenan Bell hit a two-run double down the left field line that scored both India and Maldonado. Horvath doubled in two more runs with his shot to the left-center. Langworthy (up for the second time in the inning) singled through the hole on the left side of the infield that scored Horvath and the half-inning finally concluded (after 33 minutes) with the Gators in control 10-4.
Jonathan India finished 2-2 with a pair of homers, 3 RBI and drew a walk. Horvath and Langworthy each went 3-4 in the game. Freshman Tommy Mace earned his first career victory by working 3.1 innings in relief. Mace struck out four while only allowing one hit. The Gators pitching staff struck out ten Seminoles hitters on Tuesday.
Florida will travel to South Carolina to open SEC play this weekend. The Gamecocks are 11-5 overall.
