BALTIMORE – Despite Maggi Hall’s five goal effort for the Gators, the No. 10 Florida women’s lacrosse team dropped their season opener to No. 8 Loyola Maryland, 18-10.

The game was tied at eight at the half, before the Greyhounds opened the second half with an eight goal, third period. The Greyhounds outshot the Gators 30-25.

Emily Heller netted the first goal of the season early in the first period after converting from the free position. Heller finished with two goals in the contest.

Hall led the offense with five goals, four of which were in the first half. Gianna Monaco, Ava Tighe and Sarah Falk all found the back of the net for the Gators.

Gabbi Koury and Madison Waters had one assist each in the first half. Both were dished out to Hall.

The Gators will need to control the circle better to win the possession battle. Loyola had 20  draw controls to Florida’s 11. Heller and Liz Harrison led the team with three draw controls each.

First year starting goalkeeper Elyse Finelle recorded six saves in the match, with a .333 save percentage.

The Gators are back in action on February 17, when they head to Chapel Hill to take on the third ranked, UNC Tar Heels. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m. on ACCNX.
