• WGYM: Auburn Regional Final Liveblog feat. No. 2 Florida

Tonight, four teams enter, two teams advance as the Gators take the next step toward qualifying to the NCAA National Championships. In this Regional Final, Florida will face off against No. 6 Auburn, No. 9 Kentucky, and No. 13 Denver – all opponents the Gators have fought and won against before this season, even if only this week. Florida tied with Auburn in its final dual meet of the season and bested it at the SEC Championships, defeated Kentucky both in dual format and at conference championships, and qualified in first to this meet over Denver in second. If the Gators can turn in another “normal” performance, in the words of head coach Jenny Rowland, they should have no trouble qualifying to nationals.

Their round two performance was not exactly normal, but pretty close to it. Senior Nya Reed was held out as a precaution with some heel pain in warmups, so Payton Richards stepped in for her on floor and Bri Edwards stepped in on vault. Chloi Clark was also a late substitution to the vault lineup for Sloane Blakely, for reasons unknown, so the vault lineup had 3 Yurchenko fulls instead of its optimal one, and Florida only went 49.1 on the event. Even so, the Gators went pretty much lights out on the other three events, racking up a 198.125, which was good enough for second-best in the nation across all four regionals. Superstar Trinity Thomas led the charge to that high mark, earning two perfect 10.0s for her efforts, one on floor and one on bars, and completing a full Gym Slam in just a single season, the first Gator to ever do so.

Tonight, Reed reportedly does plan to return to the lineup, so expect to see much more secure numbers on vault. Floor succeeded even without her, earning a whopping 49.7, but having her back in the lineup should put everyone more at ease. The Gators will start on floor again tonight, and familiar competition order should be a boon to them – all they have to do is a repeat performance of Thursday night and they should qualify.

The Auburn regional final is tonight, 4/2, at 6pm ET on ESPN+, but if you don’t have access or are watching another meet, we’ll have every moment for you, play by play, right here!

5:53pm: I am in Savannah for the weekend for a very important wedding, but two things I would not miss for the world happening the same day means I am liveblogging from the floor of my hotel room! I believe I have a setup that will work for me, but if I don’t get everything, I apologize ahead of time – there were several alternative plans that we ended up having to scrap and go with this, so hopefully it works.

    6:03pm: Rotation 1 is a go!

Skaggs, FX: Rudi to stag, much better control tonight than the first night. Dance series looks clean! 1.5 to front lay, single step forward – that’s the way to start off, Gators!

Sabados, Auburn UB: Big release skills. Sticks dismount!

Angeny, UK VT: Great Yfull, we didn’t even see Procasky to start.

Ruiz also hit beam for Denver leadoff.

6:04pm: Groth, UB: Ray is big! Wow. Pak is clean. A little loose on the final handstand. Double back bounce back on the landing.

Baumann, FX: Super clean 1.5 to front full, great control out. Only caught the tail end of her dance series, looked fine. Double pike to finish was a good one! Another solid routine for the Gators.

Another clean Yfull from Kentucky, this time from Nixon.

Stevens, UB: Ray is nice. Bail is pretty clean. DLO stuck!

    Magnelli stuck her pike half??

Patterson, VT: another front pike half, little hop to the side on the landing.

Iwai, BB: Series is solid. Stuck gainer dismount!

Brusch, UB: Great first handstands. Maloney to bail, great legs through that. Celebrating like she stuck but I didn’t see it.

6:09pm: Wong, FX: Triple full, a little crooked but landing is well controlled. Whip half to front full, gorgeous form through there but step forward is a little big, back foot drags a bit behind her. Clean final pass – should be another great score.

Worley, VT: Y1.5, little adjustment on the landing, but that will be a great score.

Gobourne, UB: Tkachev to pak, some flexed feet but great amplitude. Sticks her dismount COLD! Auburn is fighting for this.

Schlottman just fell for Denver on beam, remounted, and had another bobble. They’ll want to drop that score.

6:11pm: Lee, UB: Maloney to pak, hit her feet on the bar but somehow didn’t stop moving? Stuck dismount though!

Reed, FX: Happy to see her back in tonight. DLO to start, does well to absorb the landing without bouncing because she would’ve gone OOB. Front lay to Rudi is a great one. Dance series looks clean. Double pike to finish it out and she looks THRILLED. Another great one for the Gators.

Hutchinson, BB: Caught this from her pike front toss, lands it almost standing straight up, love that. Cartwheel to stuck gainer full! A great reset for the Pios.

6:14pm: Thomas, FX: DLO, just a beauty. Absolutely incredible. Dance series is super clean, all three elements in oversplit. Front full front lay, so floaty into that second element – another incredible routine from this superstar. We’ll see if they give it to her again… they do!! Perfect 10.0!

Mundell, BB: Ooh, fun mount sequence low to the beam, that’s different. Bhs loso, maybe a little lean but covers well. Full turn, nice high toe work. Switch to switch half, nice. 1.5 dismount, step forward.

Blakely, FX: Double arabian, a little uncontrolled into the corner but stays in bounds. Leap series is clean and well controlled. Double tuck, and that one goes OOB, that’s okay, every score the Gators have in the clubhouse already is 9.9 or better. 1.5 to front lay, better control there. She needs to hold her final pose longer, even when she’s not thrilled with her performance.

AFTER ONE: UF 49.65, UK 49.375, DU 49.325, AUB 49.2

Ashley Miles Grieg, commentating this meet, said of watching Thomas’s perfection on floor: “It never gets old.” TRULY!!!

    6:26pm: Rotation 2 time!

Skaggs, VT: Yfull, little adjustment on the landing. Owen was standing in the way so we couldn’t see exactly what kind or how big.

Davis, UK UB: Handstands at the beginning looked a little loose. Releases were good. Bounce back on the dismount.

Iwai, Denver FX: 1.5 to front lay to stag, nicely done. Tour jete full (I think?) looked a little wild. Double tuck to finish.

Hollingsworth hits opening beam for Auburn.

Schoenherr, VT: Y1.5, hits it tonight! Good bounce back after sitting it the other night.

6:28pm: Procasky hit bars but another not stuck dismount – it’s gonna come down to these litle tenths, y’all.

Wong, VT: Podkopayeva IS STUCK COLD! WOW! One of the best I’ve seen her do, maybe even better than at NCSU.

Brusch, BB: Front aerial to split, nice. Acro series is so solid, locks those arms down. Dance series looked nice. Gainer full stuck!

Nixon, UB: Great low bar handstand. Maloney to bail is solid. FLIES on her dismount, couldn’t hold the stick though.

Reed, VT: Y1.5, STICKS IT TOO! I am screaming and I do not care who hears!!

Luksik, UB: Big Ray, nice. Bail a little imprecise. DLO is stuck! There they go!

Thomas, VT: Y1.5, looked stuck too! Holy cow!

Stevens, BB: Dance series looks clean, like that she does a ring jump. Wolf turn is nice. Roundoff 1.5, jumps her feet together but that robs her of the stick I think.

Blakely, VT: Y1.5, deep squat, has to hop to the side to keep it under control.

6:34pm: Groth, BB: Bhs loso bhs, takes it allllll the way to the end of the beam but does not flinch at all. Switch to switch half, gorgeous. Full turn is clean. Side aerial back full stuck!

Worley, UB: Great opening handstand, the clear hip was maybe a little loose. Tkachev is great. Pak is nice too. Full out dismount, has to step forward.

Mundell, FX: Double pike to start, good control there. Maybe a little shy of 180 on her second dance element there, and I couldn’t see her ring position because of the camera angle. Front lay to front full was textbook, nice. Punch Rudi to finish and it’s a good one! That’ll be a great score for Denver.

6:37pm: McLaughlin, BB: Switch leap directly to bhs loso, don’t see that too often. Side aerial, looked a little low on her landing but locked it down somehow. Full turn is fine. Switch to straddle quarter, good split positions there. Gainer pike off the end, maybe a little slide back in her salute.

Hutchinson, FX: Front double full to open! Very nice! 1.5 to front lay, great control coming out of that. Lovely extension on her dance series. Rudi to straddle jump to finish – that’ll be another great one. They’re very much still in this.

6:40pm: Lee, BB: Single wolf turn, lovely and controlled. Front aerial to bhs loso, connects it all nicely. Leap series is gorgeous. Bhs gainer full stuck! Redemption after falling at SECs and the bars mishap for sure.

Denver got five solid scores, so it appears they have scratched their final athlete.

And Suni Lee gets a perfect 10.0! They are just flying tonight, wow.

AFTER TWO: UF 99.35, AUB 98.825, DU 98.7, UK 98.625

    6:49PM: Rotation 3!

Blakely, UB: Maloney to pak look good. Final handstand is gorgeous. Double front is STUCK! That’s a great way to bounce back for her after that vault, love to see it.

Brusch, Aub FX: Hits the opening pass, Miles Grieg just marveling at it. Double pike to finish, absolutely nails it, almost stuck it cold.

McCusker, UB: Maloney to pak, lots of momentum through there. van Leeuwen is great. Stalder to double tuck, just a bounce back on the landing. Solid routine for her.

Haigis, UK BB: Little lean on her acro series but keeps it small. Switch to shushunova to front support on the beam, love that. Full turn is good. Cat leap to front aerial, lovely. Hop on the dismount with a college stick.

Casali, Denver VT: Yfull big hop back.

Schoenherr, UB: Jaeger is gorgeous as usual. Bail looked good. NAILED this double front half out! Yes Sav!

6:53pm: Watson, FX: nailed her double arabian to open. Double tuck to finish but I missed everything in between watching others.

Hutchinson, VT: NAILS a Yfull, stuck cold.

Skaggs, UB: Tkachev to pak is gorgeous as always. Great handstands to finish. DLO stuck cold! Yes ma’am!

Lean from Kentucky’s Magnelli on beam, but stayed on and stuck her dismount! They’ve had some trouble with landings, that’ll help.

6:55pm: Mundell, VT: Y1.5, little shuffle back. That’ll be great for them.

Thomas, UB: Maloney to pak, great through those. GORGEOUS low bar handstand work. van Leeuwen is great. Almost overarches her final handstand but saves it. DLO is stuck cold! Won’t be a 10.0 but it was dang close.

Stevens, FX: Front lay to Rudi, legs a little wild and piked. Has to cowboy her double tuck to finish, yikes.

A fall from Denver on vault!

Patterson, BB: Really lovely from what I’ve seen in between routines. Switch leap to second switch leap, easily the best of those I’ve seen this season. Cat leap to switch side, great. Gainer pike off the end, little hop.

Wong, UB: Maloney to pak looks great. van Leeuwen is solid. Good final handstand. DLO stuck!

6:58pm: Groth, UB: Front double full to open! Nice. Dance series looked clean. 1.5 to front lay, lovely. Rudi to finish, solid control and mostly clean in the legs.

Worley, BB: Cat leap to switch side, good positions there. Front aerial to bhs loso, just lays it back, no effort visible. Full turn is solid. Roundoff 1.5 twist stuck! That should help Kentucky’s chances.

Lee, FX: DLO, one of her better ones! Doesn’t move the front foot at all. Switch ring is a good one too. Combo pass to close, takes it right to the line but does not go over. Should be another great score.

Angeny, BB: Bhs loso loso, she was kinda off but figured out how to save it somehow! Split to straddle 1/4, good positions. Side aerial back tuck full, kinda off to the side? But pulled it around somehow.

7:04pm: Gobourne, FX: Final routine of the rotation, all eyes on her – just how she likes it. Double tuck to open, so open, well controlled. Dance series is nice and precise. Front full to front lay, clean form through both of those. Double pike to finish, big shimmy on the landing because she KNOWS she’s nailed it. Based on other scores tonight, I can see it going 10.0. But no, it goes 9.975.

AFTER THREE: UF 149.025, AUB 148.325, UK 147.925, DU 147.875

7:12pm: Rotation 4! Last one best one!

Groth, Aub VT: Yfull, bounce back.

Procasky, UK FX: Switch ring 1/2 to start, that was interesting. Two passes cleanly done so far.

Skaggs, BB: Wolf turn to start is good. Switch to split, lovely. Bhs loso, solid. Cat leap to switch side, nice and steady. Side aerial back full is stuck! The queen of the leadoff.

Ruiz hits bars to lead Denver off.

Hubbard, VT: Y1.5, hop forward. A little knees in the air.

7:14pm: Stevens, VT: Y1.5, little deep in the knees but stuck! Wow!

Patterson, FX: 1.5 to front lay to start, nice and floaty into that second element. Dance series is clean. Ooh, falls out of last pass and goes OOB, that will not bode well for their chances barring a mistake from Auburn.

Blakely, BB: Front aerial to bhs, solid. Rest looked good, I think she stuck her dismount as well.

Casali, UB: Maloney to bail, looked good. I missed her dismount, but Hebinck after her hit as well.

    Gobourne, VT: Y1.5, step forward.

Watson, VT: Y1.5, STUCK COLD! Crowd goes WILD for her.

7:18pm: Baumann, BB: Bhs loso, dead on, so solid. Front aerial to beat, excellent. Splits in her dance series are excellent as always. Stuck dismount let’s GO!

Lee, VT: Yhalf on, layout half off, bounce back. Some bend in her layout shape but they rarely deduct for that.

Magnelli just hit floor for Kentucky – a good reset for them.

7:20pm: Mundell, UB: Great opening handstand. Tkachev is gorgeous, to pak nice. DLO, little bounce in place it looked like.

Wong, BB: Series is clean, excellent. Switch ring, little check there but her ring position was good tonight. Front aerial, looked like maybe another check but she hides it very well. Roundoff double full stuck!

Anna Haigis with another hit for the Wildcats – they need that too.

7:23pm: Thomas, BB: Switch leap mount, nails it. Bhs loso, so solid. Front aerial, hesitates a little, beat jump to korbut, she may lose some bonus for that and may not start from 10.0, unless she has more bonus than she needs with her normal routine. Step forward on the dismount.

Davis, FX: Double pike to open, has lots of room before the boundary there, wow. Combo pass was clean… I missed the rest because I was watching Trin, sorry! It was a hit, I do know that.

7:26pm: Clapper, BB: Bhs loso loso, little lean to the side but doesn’t move her arms, just waits for it to settle into her body, so patient. What a veteran. Dance series is solid. Side aerial back full looked stuck from here! A great finish for the Gators.

Worley, FX: Full in is great! Front full front lay, gorgeous, very clean leg and toe form. Double tuck to close and the team is chanting for a 10 – I doubt she’ll get it, but I think it’s mathematically impossible for them to catch Auburn.

    FINAL: UF: 198.775, AUB 197.775, UK 197.5, DU 197.225

Trinity Thomas matches her own career high, which is also the all-time UF record, for AA score with a MASSIVE 39.9.

Jenny Rowland is tearing up on camera talking about her team’s performance tonight. Riley McCusker is dancing and cheering back with the crowd, Morgan Hurd just tackled Thomas in a hug – I love seeing the joy and camraderie on this team.

Florida and Auburn will advance to nationals! Two weeks from now, we’ll see you back here for liveblogs for semifinal II on Thursday night 4/14, following the Gators, and as long as they qualify to finals on Saturday afternoon, we’ll be here to cover that as well. Thanks for joining us tonight! See you back here for Nationals!

After defeating No. 20 UCF Wednesday in Gainesville, No. 7 Florida fell to No. 17 Auburn Friday night 3-1 on the road.

The Gators drop to 28-6 overall and 5-5 in conference play — ninth in the SEC.

Senior right-hander Elizabeth Hightower started in the circle for the Gators and pitched all six innings. Hightower struck out a season-high nine batters but yielded a pair of home runs en route to picking up her second loss this season.

Offensively, the Gators struggled to produce much against Auburn right-hander Maddie Penta. Florida stranded four batters through the first four innings before finally driving in its lone run in the top of the sixth.

Fifth-year second baseman Hannah Adams led off with a base hit before she advanced to third and scored on senior center fielder Cheyenne Lindsey’s sacrifice fly.

Penta recorded the first 19 outs before Auburn southpaw Shelby Lowe came in for relief in the bottom of the seventh and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to close the game. Penta earned her 18th win this year — tied for the second most in the nation.

  • WGYM Liveblog: Auburn Regional Round Two ft. No. 2 Florida

It has already been a wild day of competition across the nation, as four NCAA Regional meets convene to narrow the field from the top 36 teams in the country to the top eight.

Tonight, we’ll follow our Gators as they compete in the second session of Round Two in Auburn, where Kentucky and Auburn have already punched their tickets to the regional final.

Florida will face off against No. 15 Denver, No. 17 Ohio State, and No. 28 Iowa State, and must finish in the top two to advance to the regional final. The Gators will start on floor, one of their strongest events, so you’ll know they’re in good shape if they have a strong lead after rotation one.

While it should be pretty straightforward for Florida to qualify to the regional final, stranger things have happened today. LSU did not advance out of its round two competition, counting a fall on beam and allowing Iowa and Missouri to overtake it to qualify instead. The Tigers counted a fall on beam, with typically rock-steady Christina Desiderio falling in the lead-off position as they began the final rotation. LSU let the pressure get the best of them, and if they want to qualify, the Gators cannot let it happen to them.

The good news is that Florida has been there before. Many of these athletes – the seniors and 5th years – know what it feels like to not qualify to nationals as a team in this format, and that knowledge will motivate them to ensure it doesn’t happen again. This team shouldn’t have to do much, though; a normal performance will easily take this team to the regional final and hopefully beyond.

They’ll take that first step toward qualification tonight at 8pm, which will be broadcast on ESPN+, but if you don’t have access or can’t make it to a streaming device, we will have every moment here play by play.

7:37pm: It has been a surprising day of competition y’all!

Advancing to regional finals so far are the following teams:

    NormanMinnesotaCalifornia
    SeattleAlabamaMichigan State
    RaleighMissouriIowa
    AuburnKentuckyAuburn

LSU just missed out, as previously mentioned, and Kentucky leapfrogged Auburn to qualify in first despite being the second seed. Michigan State qualified over Washington, despite Washington having one of its best meets of the season with a 197.175, the highest score so far of any team that did not qualify.

The Raleigh regional is currently ongoing, with Michigan and UCLA the current top two. UCLA actually lead Michigan for the moment, but the Bruins are about to go to the ever-treacherous beam while Michigan heads to bars, where they’re ranked No. 4 in the nation.

8:00pm: We’re getting the intro now!

Ashley Miles Grieg commentating tonight, love to see that. And these new Florida leos! Very exciting.

Skaggs, FX: Rudi to stag jump, little wild in the air. Dance series looked solid. Combo pass, single step forward, close to the line but stays in. A solid start!

Iwai, Denver VT: Yfull, little bounce back.

8:05: Steinmeyer, ISU BB: Front toss to beat jump, nice. Series is clean. Switch to straddle 1/4, definitely short of 180. Roundoff 1.5, little adjustment.

Denver a little short on vault, not sure who it was.

Richards, FX: DLO, pops it out into a lunge, but Miles is right, a little forward on the landing. 1.5 to front tuck, that was supposed to be laid out… may get hit on start value there.

8:09pm: Hankins, OSU UB: Solid release skills. Short on last handstand. DLO stuck!

Baumann, FX: 1.5 to front full, well controlled, one of her better ones this season. Turn sequence is fine. Leap combo is lovely! Double pike to close, control is good, height is solid. That’s the way to reset!

Denver finishes with a 9.425 on vault, I didn’t quite see what happened. Think that was Moravansky who did a nice Yfull just now, almost a little flare on the landing.

Wong, FX: Triple full just flies, gorgeous. Leap series is lovely. Combo pass, still no stag, I think that’s a permanent change, and the right one. Finishes with a solid double pike!

Mara Titarsolej just hit a solid bars routine as an individual for LIU! Love to see her out here.

8:15pm: Thomas, FX: DLO is awesome as usual. Triple dance series, that’s where she’s getting the extra bonus to only do two passes I believe. Combo pass, great control, slow single step forward. She looks PUMPED!

Blakely, FX: Double arabian, keeps that landing under control. Double tuck, solid. Combo pass is clean to finish. The team is stoked – as they should be, as Blakely’s routine was excellent and Thomas got a perfect 10.0!!

DeMers, CMU indvidual BB: Ooh, fun straddle jump mount over the beam to front support. Series, little stutter but stays on. Switch to split, maybe a little shy of 180 there. A 9.85, good for her!

AFTER ONE: UF 49.7, OSU 49.4, ISU 49.15, DU 49.0

8:30pm: Edwards, VT: Reed is out this week – no word on why yet, but Edwards steps in. Yfull, underdoes it, tries too hard for the stick.

    Hit beam for OSU.

Boychuk, ISU FX: Hit first two passes. Double tuck to close is solid!

Skaggs, VT: Yfull, nice in the air, bounce back. Better, but not lights out. That’s okay, they need more gas in the tank for Saturday.

Schoenherr, VT: Y1.5, sits it! Oh yikes. Worried about that foot like last year.

Cooke, FX: Front double full, somehow muscles a stag jump out of that but very awkward. Performing the heck out of this choreo, love to see that. Hit last pass.

Wong, VT: Podkopayeva – Yhalf on, pike half off – not as big as she’s done, bounce back. No landings really yet.

8:33pm: Casali hit bars for Denver, and so did Ruiz before her.

Thomas, VT: Y1.5, small hop forward. Great amplitude as usual.

Orrego, FX: Double tuck to open, solid start. 1.5 to front lay, great control out of that. Really working this floor choreo section. Double pike to finish, nice! A great routine for her.

Chloi Clark in for Blakely on VT: Yfull, bounce back. Looked pretty good in the air.

8:36pm: Mundell, UB: Gorgeous Tkachev! Bail is right on. DLO is a little piked in the hips but stuck!

Parker, FX: Double pike to open, solid. Short on one of her leaps but lovely presentation. Front tuck through to double tuck, good control there.

Thompson, UB: Good first handstand. Piked jaeger lacked a little amplitude, a little floppy on the bail. DLO, step forward.

8:40pm: Loyim, FX: Dance series looks good. Double tuck, crashes that to her hands as well.

Warga anchors OSU on BB with a hit!

Diab, FX: Front double full to front layout! Wow, that’s so hard to do in combination, sooooo high. Front full front lay to stag jump, super clean form through there and she really floats through the second element. Rudi to loso to finish, and it’s a BEAUTY. What a champ! Man, I would love to have seen that routine more often this season, Big 12 is just so hard to watch because of broadcast access.

8:45pm: DeMers, CMU indiv FX: front double full to open, which is just gorgeous, very well controlled. Double pike gets a ton of air but a little wild, front foot slides back a ways. Leap series is snappy and aggressive. Front lay to Rudi to finish and she’s LEAPING into the air for joy, she’s so pumped for herself. Good for her, that’ll be huge.

AFTER TWO: UF 98.8, OSU 98.5, ISU 98.35, DU 98.325

Some updates for you before we start the third rotation in Auburn – Reed’s rest tonight is purely precautionary, and UCLA does indeed qualify ahead of Michigan, the reigning national champions! No small feat.

    8:55pm: Rotation 3!

Blakely, UB: Hit releases but double front dismount takes several steps forward? That’s unusual for her.

Ruiz hits beam to open for Denver, culminating in a stuck gainer pike.

McCusker, UB: Great handstand to open. Maloney to pak is gorgeous. Solid handstand there, van Leeuwen looked good. Stalder to double tuck dismount, just a step back. Very nice!

Boychuk, VT: Stuck her Yfull! Very nice. Commentator is confused, thinks she’s Loyim.

Bobble from Mabanta on beam, but stays on.

Schoenherr, UB: Great opening handstand. Jaeger is gorgeous! Handstands after are good. Bail is dead on! Great final handstand. Double front half out, just a little adjustment, but what a comeback for her!

8:59pm: Gagliardi, OSU FX: Obsessed with this routine, I saw it at Big 10s and couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen it yet. It’s a dance through the movies, and she’s nailed every pass so far. Final pass is a double pike, STUCK! What a routine!

Skaggs, UB: Lovely opening handstand. Tkachev to pak is great! Great last handstands. DLO, legs do come apart but sticks the landing! Love to see it.

Steinmeyer of ISU came up short, sat her vault. Maxwell hit though, so they should be able to drop that fall.

Thomas, UB: Low bar handstand is solid. Maloney to pak, came a little close but saved it without a single thought. van Leeuwen is good. STUCK her DLO, wow!

9:03pm: Wong, UB: Maloney to pak, little leg sep. van Leeuwen looks good. DLO is stuck as well! Thomas apparently got a 10 despite her adjustment on her pak, we’ll see what they do for Wong??

Edwards, FX: Huge double pike to open, very nice. Combo pass, bounds forward but stays in bounds somehow. Leaps are gorgeous, nice oversplits. Double tuck tof inish, nails it.

Hutchinson, BB: Switch to split, hard to see angles from here but maybe a little shy of 180? Front toss is very nice. Stuck dismount! Denver is not giving up without a fight!

Hlavach, FX: Toxic for her music, obsessed. Piked full in to start! Wow! Combo pass, well controlled out of that. Dance passage is solid, some flexed feet toward the end. Double tuck to close, great amplitude.

Mundell, BB: Series, little arm swings but she stays on. Switch, has to break in her dance series but adds a beat jump after to keep her compositional requirement, smart girl. Roundoff 1.5 dismount, step forward.

9:10pm: Grimes, FX: Hit opening passes. Dance series looked clean, hit 180 positions just fine. Double tuck to close, a little short, had to step forward instead of back.

AFTER THREE: UF 148.45, DU 147.625, OSU 147.625, ISU 147.45

Denver and Ohio State tied going into the final rotation! This is really coming down to the wire, y’all!

9:20pm: Rotation 4! Here we go!

Ohio State had Ricciardi lead off with a strong Yfull.

Skaggs, BB: Switch to split, looks a little tight, but might just be the camera angle. Bhs loso, little lean to the side but snaps her arms down and does not wobble. Front aerial, perfection. Side aerial back full is stuck!! What a start for this beam team!

Iwai, Denver, FX: Really selling this routine! Hit all passes so far. Double tuck to close, well done! A good start for the Pios.

Edwards, VT: Yfull, great amplitude, looked stuck to me! She’s from my hometown too.

9:23pm: Ruiz, FX: Front tuck through to double tuck, strong start. Dance series looks clean. Double pike to finish, big lunge back but I think her front foot stayed planted.

Blakley, BB: Front aerial to bhs is solid. Switch to switch half, some flex in that back foot. Side aerial back full is stuck!

Hlavach, VT: Yfull on, layout half off I think? That’s a unique vault, like to see it. Bouncy on the landing though.

Mabanta, FX: 1.5 to front lay, solid out of that. Front lay to Rudi, solid finish. Another one in the bag for Denver, we’ll see how things progress now that Ohio State is in the clubhouse on vault.

Baumann, BB: Bhs loso, dead on! Switch to split, nicely done. Front aerial to beat, glorious. She’s really attacking this. Side aerial, great. Roundoff 1.5, leans to keep it stuck! What a star.

A 196.925 is what Denver needs to beat in order to advance past Ohio State.

Big stuck dismount for Iowa State! That was Basuel.

Wong, BB: Bhs loso, lovely. Switch ring, impossible to tell angle from here. Front aerial looked great. Double full dismount, fights to stay put and I think she gets it?

Mundell, FX: Great double pike to open, leap series looks good. Front lay front full, nice and clean. Rudi to finish, really selling the ending choreo.

Orrego steps forward on her bars dismount – won’t be enough for Iowa State, but they really put up a fight tonight, wow.

9:30pm: Thomas, BB: Mount sequence is great. Bhs loso, dead on. Front aerial to beat to korbut is great. Stuck dismount!

Thompson, FX: Classic rock routine in here, this is fun. Hit first two passes. Rudi to close is a little wild, bounces around on the landing.

9:33pm: Hutchinson, FX: Front double full to open, that’s gorgeous, super clean and controlled. Lovely combination pass, her twisting is really clean, love to see that. Dance series looks good. Final pass was a hit, but it’s already done – Denver will qualify to the regional final!

Clapper, BB: Bhs loso loso, locks it down! Switch to split, good positions on that. Sticks her dismount!

Final routine in the building belongs to Central Michigan’s Sierra Demarinis. Combo pass is gorgeous, nice and floaty into the second element. Double pike to finish, almost gets the two foot stick but just lays it back into the lunge. Great to see her killing it out there.

    FINAL: UF 198.125, DU 197.025, OSU 196.925, ISU 196.725

Tomorrow, the Gators and Pios will face Kentucky and Auburn. It’s nothing the Gators haven’t seen before though – they’ve now beaten all of these teams at least once this season, so all they have to do is be normal again and they should make it through.

Individual qualifiers to nationals will all depend on which two teams qualify on Saturday night, but Elexis Edwards puts herself in an excellent position to do so by winning the vault title today, tying with Kentucky’s Raena Worley. Thomas, of course, wins bars and floor, and shares the beam title with Auburn’s Sunisa Lee. She also wins the all-around with a MASSIVE 39.875, breaking the season AA record (that also belonged to her).

We’ll see you back here for the Regional Finals on Saturday night at 6pm ET! Don’t be late!

  • SB: Adams Goes Yard as Florida Takes Down UCF in Gainesville
Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk

After dropping last weekend’s home series to No. 13 Tennessee, No. 7 Florida bounced back with a 10-3 victory over No. 22 UCF Wednesday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

The Gators completed the home-and-home series sweep against their in-state rival as they prevailed 12-11 over the Knights earlier this season in Orlando. Florida improves to 28-5 overall and 15-4 at home.

Senior right-handers Elizabeth Hightower and Natalie Lugo made their 14th and 12th appearances in the circle this year. Hightower pitched the first five innings — allowing three earned runs via a pair of RBI triples — before Lugo came in for relief in the top of the sixth and threw two shutout frames to secure the win. Hightower picked up the win — matching freshman right-hander Lexie Delbrey’s team-high nine victories.

The Gators came out hot offensively as they scored two runs in the first inning followed by six runs in the second. Redshirt junior shortstop Skylar Wallace scored Florida’s first run of the night after she led off with a hit-by-pitch.

Wallace stole her 29th and 30th bases this season, which ranks second in the nation behind only USF outfielder Alexis Johns (36). A UCF error in the bottom of the second allowed Florida to load the bases and drive in four runs with two outs. Sophomore left fielder Katie Kistler lined a two-run single into right-center before sophomore catcher Emily Wilkie roped a two-run double down the left-field line.

In the bottom of the sixth, Florida second baseman Hannah Adams led off with a solo shot — her third home run this year — to take a commanding 10-3 lead.

Florida has won its past five meetings with Auburn, which includes three shutout victories.

  • LAX: Gators finish strong entering conference play
Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk

Florida entered Five-Star Stadium in Macon, Georgia, with one game remaining before conference play and a five-game winning streak on the line. After going through their fair share of ups and downs early on, the Gators have been red hot on the final stretch before AAC play begins.

They showed no signs of cooling off against Mercer on Wednesday.

No. 10 Florida (7-4) defeated Mercer (5-3) 19-5 to close out the opening stretch of non-conference play. UF now holds claim to five straight wins and a perfect 6-0 record against unranked groups heading into the most important portion of the regular season.

It was a total offensive attack Wednesday afternoon. Ten Gators found the back of the net during the contest. Emma LoPinto, coming off her fifth AAC freshman of the week award this season, led they way with five goals. Maggi Hall followed closely behind her with her fourth hat trick of the year. Star attacker Danielle Pavinelli contributed two of her own, moving her season points total to 88.

Florida’s defense stood stout as well, allowing just 5-21 shooting from the Bears. UF caused six turnovers and Sarah Reznik imposed her will on the opposing attack with 12 saves. The senior defensive anchor continued her 40 game streak of consecutive saves, the third longest in program history.

Mercer went scoreless in the fourth quarter as Florida ran away with the victory.

The Gators now stand at 7-4, tied for the second-best record in the American Conference and just one game behind first, after holding a sub .500 as recently as March 11.

“Once again impressed with the growth we have seen out of this team since the beginning of the season,” head coach Amanda O’Leary said. “They continue to improve on both ends of the field.”

With non-conference play over, Florida’s focus shifts towards a competitive AAC. First up on the slate is the Cincinnati Bearcats.

The Bearcats are 6-6 on the season, a respectable record, but their level of competition early on doesn’t compare to Florida’s resume. Cincy holds a subpar 1-4 record at home, something for the Gators to look forward too heading into Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“Looking forward to starting conference play on Sunday,” O’Leary said.

Opening draw is set for April 3 at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

  • BSB: No. 14 Gators Take Down No. 5 FSU in Jacksonville

Photo by Benjamin Fox | ChompTalk

The game of baseball offers fans a chance to see something new anytime its being played, or so the adage goes.

On Tuesday, Gators’ freshman shortstop Deric Fabian managed to strikeout despite never swinging and missing at a third strike.

Following the second pitch of Fabian’s fifth inning at-bat, home plate umpire, Scott Cline, raised his fist to call the batter out. Fabian had called for time prior to the first pitch of the at-bat, but it wasn’t granted. The ruling was that Fabian’s foot wasn’t inside the batter’s box which results in a strike. Unfortunately for Fabian, it was the third strike.

Fortunately for Florida, however, Josh Rivera followed by taking the next pitch out of the park and giving the Gators a 5-2 lead over Florida State.

Rivera’s efforts led Florida to a 6-3 win over their rival from Tallahassee Tuesday in Jacksonville in front of 8,122 fans.

Florida State actually got out to an early 1-0 lead after a leadoff double came around to score in the second inning.

The Gators evened the score in the bottom of the second as Josh Rivera hit a chopper that went to the corner in left. Deric Fabian was given the green light and scored all the way from first base.

Florida LF Wyatt Langford stole the shown in the third, robbing a three run homer from Lacey that likely would have swung momentum. Langford followed that catch with a sliding catch in foul territory to end the inning and the FSU threat.

The ‘Noles did add a run in the fourth on a bases loaded walk surrendered by Nick Ficarrotta. The Gators got that one back just before Rivera’s homer on BT Riopelle’s RBI groundout.

On the mound, Garrett Milchin lasted just 2.1 innings, but that was explained by head coach Kevin O’Sullivan as keeping the right hander available for this weekend’s series at Georgia (Thursday – Saturday). Brandon Neely picked up his first win, tossing 1.2 innings of shutout ball. Blake Purnell (S, 2) closed things out with 2.2 innings of work.

For Florida, the domination of their rival continued. The Gators have won eighteen of the last twenty-one meetings between the teams. The two teams will meet in Tallahassee on April 12 before making up the previously postponed Gainesville date on May 17.

  • LAX: Gators shutdown Sun Devils, 21-10
Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk

On Sunday, Florida and Arizona State’s lacrosse programs met for the first time ever. A win was equally important for bragging rights and season momentum with both teams sitting around .500 and conference play approaching. The Gators would return home from Tempe, Arizona, with bragging rights, a boost in the IWLCA poll and a four-game winning streak.

No. 10 Florida (6-4) defeated Arizona State (4-5) 21-10 in a strong performance for the Gators. With just one game remaining before conference play gets underway against Cincinnati, a string of wins like this is exactly what Amanda O’Leary and her team need to gain momentum.

“It was a great opportunity for us to get some players experience against a strong Pac-12 team,” O’Leary said.

Danielle Pavinelli opened the scoring for the Gators in just 47 seconds. The sophomore would end the afternoon with a career-high seven goals. Pavinelli is on pace to become UF’s 19th 100-point scorer with 85 goals in 10 games so far. Pavinelli has recorded a goal in 13 straight games.

Speaking of career games, plenty of Gators put out the best stat lines of their collegiate careers during the contest. Ashley Gonzalez recorded a career high four goals and five points. Redshirt junior Paisley Eagan finished with four assists and seven points, both personal bests.

After an overall dominant first half, the Gators exited the locker room from the break up 14-4. Nine Gators found the back of the net on the way to a dominant performance offensively.

“We really came out today with a lot of energy,” O’Leary said. “Our offense was clicking from the start and swung the momentum in our direction.”

Despite the Sun Devils’ late run, it was a strong outing overall for the Gators’ defense. ASU nearly equaled their shot total (21) in turnovers (20). Florida was credited with forcing nine changes of possession. Sarah Reznick maintained a .400 save percentage. The senior has recorded a save in 39 straight games, the third longest streak in program history.

Florida stayed two steps ahead of Arizona State, outscoring the ‘Devs 7-6 in the final half of play. The Gators held onto their perfect 5-0 record against unranked competition.

Up next, the Gators have their final game before AAC play begins away against Mercer. The Bears are 5-2 on the season and have won their last two games against Presbyterian College and Stetson University. Florida will be Mercer’s third ranked opponent this year, with USC and North Carolina representing the Bears’ only other ranked competition and their only two losses.

FIrst draw in Macon, Georgia, is set for Wednesday at 3 p.m.

  • SB: Gators Drop Home Series to Lady Vols
Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk

The Gators fell to the Lady Volunteers at home Friday and Saturday before they bounced back with a 4-1 series-finale victory Sunday.

Tennessee’s pitchers held Florida scoreless through the first 13 innings until sophomore catcher Emily Wilkie hit a two-run homer — her first this season — with two outs in the bottom of the seventh Saturday to break the shutout.

On Sunday, Florida right-handers Elizabeth Hightower and Natalie Lugo threw a combined two-hitter as Hightower recorded the first 13 outs and allowed Tennessee’s lone run via a solo shot. Redshirt junior shortstop Skylar Wallace scored three of Florida’s four runs while going 2-2 at the dish with a double, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and three stolen bases.

In the field, the Gators maintained a clean slate and made no errors for the first series this year. Following the weekend, Florida drops to 27-5 overall and 5-4 in conference play — eighth in the SEC.

  • “LSU just imposed their will on us”: Tigers blow out UF for second straight day
Photo by Samuel Lewis | Getty Images

As LSU designated hitter Brayden Jobert rounded the bases, the third-base dugout of Florida Ballpark lost its mind.

As the Tigers’ roster whooped, hollered and rattled the dugout cage to celebrate the sophomore’s second home run of the day, a ‘L-S-U’ chant broke out among the smattering of purple and gold faithful in attendance.

The scene could almost make a fan forget the Tigers were the away team.

The No. 8 Florida Gators (17-7, 3-3 SEC) fell victim to another offensive onslaught from No. 24 LSU (17-7, 3-3 SEC) Sunday, this time a 11-2 defeat, to let the Tigers steal the series.

After a quiet opening three innings featured two combined hits, the LSU bats roared forth in the top of the fourth. After a 16-run performance Saturday to even the series, the Tigers’ launched a pair of two-run homers in the fourth frame, a Jobert fly to right field followed by a laser to left from catcher Hayden Trivinski. All of the sudden, Florida found itself down four runs.

The visitors broke the game open in the top of the sixth. Three singles, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly in a six-batter stretch brought home a trio of runs for the Tigers. Jobert followed with his three-run rope to Dizney Grove over right-center field to make it a 10-0 ballgame. LSU right fielder Giovanni DiGiacomo (a worthy nominee for the best name in college baseball) singled to bring home an 11th run to cap off the inning, and Florida Ballpark began to sound like Baton Rouge as Tigers fans basked in a blowout.

Between Saturday and Sunday’s games, the Tigers scored 27 runs in 15 innings.

“It’s not a point where you’re gonna panic,” UF head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said after the game. “But at the same time, this is new for us, too. We haven’t been through something like this in back-to-back games…LSU just imposed their will on us.”

Florida starter Ryan Slater, a freshman with three earned runs and 19 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched entering Sunday’s contest, started on the weekend rubber for the first time and couldn’t maintain momentum. The two fourth-inning homers ended his afternoon with four earned runs, one strikeout and a staggering four hit batters through 3.1 innings pitched.

Every Florida pitcher struggled to avoid the LSU batters. The Gators nailed eight Tigers’ batters through the first six innings, with Nick Ficarrotta and Brandon Neely each striking a batter and Philip Abner beaning two in relief appearances. Five of Florida’s six pitchers for the day were freshmen.

“I can go on and on with the list of pitchers that were freshman and have been successful here,” O’Sullivan said. “I’m not going to sit in front of you guys and make excuses. There’s no excuses. They’re talented enough”

The Gators kept failing to capitalize at the plate in the early innings. The orange and blue left at least one runner in scoring position in three of the first four innings, including loaded bases in the bottom of the first.

“Bottom line is, he (LSU starter Samuel Dutton) made pitches when he needed to and got out of the first. Walked the leadoff man in the second and worked through it, it was competitive.”

Down 11 runs, Florida finally roused out of its offensive slumber in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single from left fielder Wyatt Langford cut the deficit to 10 before the Gators loaded the bases with one out, in desperate need of a run. Florida only managed one more run, however, and dozens of home fans began filing out of the ballpark.

An uneventful, scoreless final three innings later, and Florida let its conference home opener slip through its fingers with back-to-back losses to lose the series.

The Gators return to the diamond Tuesday with a neutral-site battle against Florida State in Jacksonville.

  • BSB: Gators Rout LSU in Series Opener

Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk

Florida ace Hunter Barco admitted he didn’t have his best stuff on Friday. That didn’t stop him from tossing seven innings of two-hit ball against one of the best lineups in the nation.

“I knew from the time I was in the bullpen that I didn’t have my best stuff…so I just had to go out there and compete”

The Gators also gave Barco a comfortable cushion by hitting three home runs and plating seven runs by seven different guys.

Second baseman Colby Halter opened the game with a solo homer to put Florida up 1-0 and to give Barco all the support he needed. Catcher BT Riopelle roped another solo shot in the fourth to increase the advantage.

Florida tacked on four runs in the fifth highlighted by Wyatt Langford’s two-run, no doubt blast to left that put the Gators up 6-0.

Barco struggled with his command by walking three batters and hitting two more. He also showed emotion on the mound after several big outs, including after striking out LSU leadoff hitter Dylan Crews to end the fifth.

The Gators tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth as relief pitcher Bryce Collins walked that bases loaded before Colby Halter popped into an infield fly that was misjudged and dropped and allowed Kendrick to score.

Nick Ficarrotta pitched the final two innings to close out the win for the Gators.

Florida improved to 17-5 on the season and 3-1 in the SEC while LSU fell to 15-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.

The two teams will continue the series Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM.
