NEW HAVEN, CT- The Florida Gators women’s tennis team hasn’t won a Division I title since 1999. Well that streak ended on Monday as #1 Florida defeated #2 North Carolina 4-2 on Yale University’s campus.
Despite earning national championships in outdoor tennis is 2003, 2011, and 2012, Florida teams have not fared well in indoor competition.
To get to the championship Florida had to defeat #13 Michigan (4-1) in the first round, #12 Texas Tech (4-1), and #6 Georgia (4-0) before facing the Tar Heels.
This is the first NCAA sanctioned national championship that Florida has earned since new athletic director Scott Stricklin took over for the retired Jeremy Foley.
