The #10 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns prevailed over #6 Florida Gators in Sunday’s rubber match by a score of 7-6. Florida drops to 17-4 (9-2 at home), while Louisiana improves to 14-5 (4-3).

Game Recap

Florida once again took the first lead, scoring four runs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Julia Roberts drove in leadoff hitter, Hannah Adams, on a 2-out RBI-single up the middle of the infield. Kendyl Lindaman followed that up with a 3-run bomb over the centerfield wall in the second inning, extending Florida’s lead to 4-0.

Florida starting pitcher, Natalie Lugo, cruised through the first five innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits. In the sixth, however, Lugo ran into some trouble. Centerfielder, Raina O’Neal launched 2-run homer to left-center to cut the lead to one run. Just a few batters later, Taylor Roman delivered an RBI-double to tie the game at 4 a piece.

As Lugo ran into trouble in the circle for Florida, Louisiana’s Summer Ellyson and Megan Kleist hurled a combined four consecutive scoreless innings after a shaky first two innings.

The two teams entered the seventh inning tied at 4. Louisiana broke the tie in the top half of the inning, adding on three runs on a 2-out rally. Carrie Boswell capped off the rally with a 2-run home run to left before Katie Chronister entered the circle in relief for Lugo. Chronister recorded the last out of the inning, and the Gators trailed 7-4 heading into the final half inning of the game.

Hannah Adams led off the inning with a hit by pitch, and Charla Echols drove in Adams and herself on a 2-run homer to make it a 1-run game with just 1 out. Ellyson was able to recover, however, as she quickly got the next two batters out to secure Louisiana’s narrow victory.
