Following a 51-35 thrashing of Mississippi to open the season a pair of Gators earned weekly honors for their role in the victory.

LB Ventrell Miller was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. Miller was all over the field on Saturday as he recorded 15 tackles (13 solo) including two tackles for loss and a sack. Miller set the high water mark in the SEC with both the 15 tackles and 13 solo tackles.

In addition to Miller, Florida center Brett Heggie earned the conference’s Offensive Lineman of the Week honors. Heggie anchored an offensive line that helped the Gators put up a program record (in an SEC game) 642 yards of offensive production.

SEC Weekly Honors, Week One:

  • Offensive: KJ Costello, QB, MSU
  • Defensive: Ventrell Miller, LB, UF
  • Special Teams: Jake Camarda, P, UGA
  • Freshman: Jaylin Simpson, DB, AU
  • Offensive Line: Brett Heggie, C, UF
  • Defensive Line: Deandre Johnson, Edge, UT

Florida will host South Carolina in its home opener Saturday. The game is slated for a noon kickoff from the Swamp where 17,000 fans are expected to be in attendance.
