Final: Florida 8, Samford 4
The Florida Gators improved to 4-2 on the season with an 8-4 win over Samford on Friday. Florida was led by RHP Tommy Mace, who tossed a gem, and CF Jud Fabian, who nearly went yard twice.
How It Happened:
Florida opened the scoring in the second inning with a two out rally that saw freshman 2B Jordan Carrion single just in front of Samford RF Ryan Crockett. Both Sterlin Thompson and Kris Armstrong scored on the play. Despite runners on second and third and the top of the lineup at-bat, Florida was unable to add to the lead.
Fabian crushed a first pitch bomb to lead off the third inning and extend the Florida lead to 3-0. That ball climbed roughly halfway up the berm beyond the left field wall.
The Gators added a three spot in the fourth highlighted by Kris Armstrong’s triple that scored Thompson. Jacob Young added an RBI double down the line that put Florida ahead 6-0. The base hit also represented the twenty fourth straight game (dating back to 2019) that Young has recorded a hit.
Florida tacked on two runs in the fifth as Thompson tripled down the line in left to score Jordan Young. Thompson scored on an errant throw by Bulldogs second baseman Brooks Carlson for the Little League homer.
Florida’s bullpen was unable to close the doors and allowed four runs over the final threr frames, something Kevin O’Sullivan was irritated by after the game.
Mace struck out a career high 11 in six innings before giving way to Brandon Sproat and Hunter Mink.
