Florida gained some momentum on the recruiting trail on Sunday afternoon. Berkeley Prep tight end, CJ Hawkins announced his commitment to the Gators after receiving an official offer on March 9th. The 6’7″ 220-pound athlete has been turning heads since his first season of high school football, last season, and is quickly climbing the ranks. In his lone season, Hawkins was an effective in-line blocker that could also line up wide, hauling in four catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Before his leap to the gridiron, Hawkins was a well known recruit in basketball.

Florida Tight Ends Coach, Tim Brewster has been the Tampa native’s primary recruiter, beating out 26 other teams in the process. Among that list were 7 SEC programs, including Alabama and Georgia. Brewster’s efforts were probably helped by the fact that Hawkins has family ties to the university, as it is his mother’s alma mater. At this time, 247Sports has not given the multi-sport athlete a ranking. However, that will change as they gain more tape on him.
With the commitment, Florida earns their second verbal commitment in the last three days and increases their class total to five. For the moment, the Gators are heating up on the recruiting trail.
