After knocking off Georgia State and Coastal Carolina in Friday’s doubleheader, No. 4 Florida shut out Tennessee State 6-0 Saturday on day two of the Bubly Invitational in Gainesville.
Florida left-hander Haley Pittman, right-hander Marissa Mesiemore and southpaw Rylee Trlicek hurled a combined one-hitter.
Pittman started in the circle and dealt four scoreless frames. The sophomore Montgomery, Alabama, native yielded Tennessee State’s lone base hit and a pair of walks but picked up her first career win as a Gator.
In the top of the fifth, Mesiemore came in for relief and threw only 19 pitches as the graduate student retired six straight batters. Lugo entered the circle in the seventh and forced three groundouts to cap off a stellar Florida pitching performance.
At the plate, the Gators opened up a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Sophomore right fielder Katie Kistler lead off the inning with a double into the left-center gap before she stole third and scored on second baseman Hannah Adams’ RBI infield single.
Adams stole second and third before the fifth-year senior scored on third baseman Charla Echols’ sacrifice fly. With two outs and a runner on base, freshman shortstop Reagan Walsh hit a two-run shot — her second homer this weekend — to centerfield.
Two innings later, Florida tacked on two insurance runs via an Echols’ RBI single up the middle followed by a Walsh sacrifice fly.
