On an afternoon that began with the Florida softball program honoring the senior class, it was a sophomore catcher that provided the big hit to propel the team to a series win in walk-off fashion. Jocelyn Erickson sent a 2-2 pitch into left field with the bases loaded that plated Mia Williams to give the Gators the 9-8 win over Texas A&M in extra innings.
Florida opened the game with three runs in the first inning following doubles from each of Korbe Otis, Skylar Wallace, and Ava Brown.
The Aggies struck for a pair of runs in the second on a home run but Florida increased its advantage to 7-2 on Otis’ grand slam in the bottom half of the inning. A sacrifice fly by Walsh extended the lead to 8-1.
But Texas A&M wasn’t done. The Aggies managed to come all the way back, in part due to a pair of mistakes on the same play that resulted in four runs in the fifth inning.
TAMU evened the score in the top of the seventh to force extra innings and to set up Erickson’s heroics.
Florida freshman pitcher, Brown, threw a complete game (8 innings) and 149 pitches. At the plate, Otis finished the day 4-5 with 5 RBI and two runs scored. Kendra Falby went 3-5 while also recorded three hits.
The Gators have a chance to sweep the nation’s number 8 team in the season finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM Sunday.
