The Florida Gators took their annual trip to California for the Judi Garman Classic this week and came away with a 3-0 record. Florida defeated Loyola Marymount and Cal State Fullerton by run-rule on Thursday before topping the #8 Baylor Bears on Saturday. Florida was also supposed to play Michigan State and Charlotte on Friday, but the contests were cancelled due to weather across the country (Michigan State was unable to make the trip).

Fullerton, CA– Senior Nicole DeWitt and junior Amanda Lorenz started the game off with a bang for the Gators hitting back-to-back solo homers in the first inning to give Florida a 2-0 lead. Lorenz, the native of nearby Moorpark, CA, went 4-4 with two singles and two home runs. Lorenz scored four runs and knocked in six RBI in the game.

Freshman Jordan Matthews crushed a three-run blast in the fourth inning to put the game away.

Senior pitcher Aleshia Ocasio was in the circle for Florida. Ocasio threw four innings while striking out seven Lions hitters and allowing only one hit and one walk. Freshman Natalie Lugo pitched the final inning for Florida, striking out two and allowing a base hit.

FULLERTON, CA– Florida played Cal State Fullerton immediately after topping the Lions and again, the Gators proved to be too much. Senior first baseman Kayli Kvistad singled in freshman Hannah Adams to put Florida on top 1-0 in the first.

Florida would go quiet for a few innings before erupting for nine runs in the fourth inning, and putting the game in run-rule territory.

The fourth inning was highlighted by Nicole DeWitt’s two run homer and sophomore Jordan Roberts’ three run blast.

Kelly Barnhill pitched four innings allowing one hit and striking out 8. Barnhill did allow four walks, but the Titans were unable to capitalize. Gainesville native Katie Chronister finished the game for Barnhill.

FULLERTON, CA– The Gators took the marquee matchup of the Classic against #8 Baylor by a 4-0 final. More impressive, the Gators, led by Kelly Barnhill no-hit the Bears. Barnhill threw six innings and struck out thirteen in earning her ninth win of the season. Aleshia Ocasio pitched the final inning, striking out the side in the seventh to complete the no-no.

Kayli Kvistad hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Hannah Adams in the first to give Florida the lead. Kvistad then hit a solo homer in the fourth to give the Gators a 2-0 lead. Nicole DeWitt crushed a two-run shot to center for all the Florida scoring.

Florida is now 19-1 on the season and will begin the SEC slate with a home series against Kentucky March 9-11. Friday’s matchup will begin at 6:00 PM.
