• BSB: Gators’ Season on the Brink Following Stunning Loss to USF
    Photo via SEC Media Portal

Florida dropped its NCAA Regionals opener to South Florida by a 5-3 score and are now just one loss from ending their season much earlier than preseason expectations anticipated.

Florida decided to play the early game (noon start) despite the NCAA allowing full capacity, thus limiting how many fans could attend. In the past, Kevin O’Sullivan has explained that the likelihood of a rain delay is greater in the later game in explaining the decision. While that decision didn’t necessarily cost Florida a victory, it did cost them the opportunity to have a packed Florida Ballpark as they tried to rally back to victory after incurring an early deficit. Oh, and Florida had to wait out a two hour an eighteen minute rain delay prior to the sixth inning.

    How It Happened:

South Florida got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second as an RBI double from Nelson Rivera plated Sullivan.

An inning later, the Bulls added to the lead with a solo homer from Riley Hogan. RF Sterlin Thompson actually had the ball in his glove, but couldn’t keep it there and the ball dropped beyond the fence and South Florida grabbed a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the frame, Florida got one back as Jacob Young scored on Nathan Hickey’s double to right center.

Florida pitcher Tommy Mace struggled, oftentimes catching too much of the plate and got hit hard as a result. In the top of the fifth he gave up another homer as Carmine Lane hit a towering blast to left to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Once again, Florida answered. An RBI single from Hickey scored Mac Guscette and put the Gators back within one.

After an extended rain delay forced O’Sullivan to use his bullpen despite only 71 pitches from Mace, the Gators called on Christian Scott. A leadoff double scored on a wild pitch to add insurance to the scoreboard.

The Bulls added one more in the seventh before a Kris Armstrong homer closed the gap to 5-3.

    Pitching Decision:

    • W: Dylan Burns (5-5)
    • L: Tommy Mace (6-2)
    • S: Orion Kerkering (5)

    Individual Stats:

    • Hickey: 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB
    • Armstrong: 2-4, HR, RBI, R
    • Guscette: 2-3, 2B, R
    • Mace: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 K, BB

    On Deck:

Florida must now win four straight games to continue its season beyond regional play. That stretch begins with a noon contest on Saturday against South Alabama. The Jaguars fell to Miami 1-0 in the evening game on Friday.

  • Dan Mullen lands contract extension through 2027

Back up the Brinks truck, the head ball coach is here to stay.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that Florida Gators football coach Dan Mullen has signed a three year contract extension to lead the team through 2027.

With the extension comes a generous raise worth up to $1.5 Million. The increase in cash flow pushes Mullen’s total salary to $7.6 Million which is third-most in the SEC behind LSU coach Ed Orgeron and Alabama’s Nick Saban. The contract is also the fifth highest in the nation.

Florida Athletic director Scott Stricklin explained the decision in a brief statement.

“Dan has done a tremendous job in his three seasons at Florida,” he praised, “and we are fortunate to have someone with his obvious talents and head coaching experience leading our football program.”

Stricklin continued, “I look forward to working alongside him to support his vision for Gators football and our student-athletes for many years.”

Coach Mullen has brought a new swagger to the Florida football team and has embraced the Gator Nation ever since his time as an offensive coordinator under former head coach Urban Meyer. Since taking over the headset, Mullen turned a piece of coal into a diamond by taking a 4-7 team from 2017 and pushed them to go 10-3 in the following season.

Mullen released a statement about extending his stay his Gainesville.

“We are very excited about the future of the Florida football program, and this agreement allows us to continue to build on the success we have enjoyed on and off the field.”

In 2020, Dan Mullen and his team produced a 8-4 record and went on a trip to the SEC Championship where they lost an intense 52-46 against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The contract extension will be put to the test this season when the team takes on elite competition like the Crimson Tide rematch in week 3 and a road trip to Death Valley to face LSU on Oct. 16.

Editors note: It should be noted that men’s basketball head coach Mike White and women’s basketball head coach also received contract extensions with the University of Florida.

  • BSB: Trio of Gators Named to SEC All-Tournament Team

    Photo via SEC Media Portal

With the conclusion of the SEC Tournament Championship Game, the All-Tournament team has been selected. With three wins, it’s hardly a surprise to see a few Florida Gators earn the honor.

Jacob Young, Nathan Hickey, and Sterlin Thompson each made the All-Tournament team.

    • Young: 8-17, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 4 R, BB
    • Hickey: 6-16, HR, RBI, 4 R, BB
    • Thompson: 6-17, HR, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 5 R, BB

Florida starting pitcher Hunter Barco is a noticable absence from the team after his dominant effort over Mississippi State. Barco tossed 7 innings of one-run ball on Wednesday as the Gators trounced the Bulldogs 13-1. His final line: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB.

The three wins have almost certainly locked the Gators into a top-16 seed for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Florida will learn their fate on Selection Monday at 12:00 PM EST.

  • Florida softball’s season ends short of Oklahoma City
Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk.com

In a sight familiar across Florida softball history, a team celebrated a series victory at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium, a jubilant dogpile with further postseason glory awaiting.

This time, however, the victors didn’t don orange and blue. The Gators were left to sit and watch as their rival Georgia waltzed away with a Super Regional victory and a Women’s College World Series birth on their home dirt.

UF needed a victory Saturday to extend their postseason another day and keep their national championship hopes alive. Instead, Georgia shut them out for the second straight day and silenced Florida to the tune of a 6-0 victory to end the Gators’ season.

Georgia ace Mary Wilson Avant, who authored a complete-game shutout in Friday’s series opener, took the mound again for the Bulldogs and didn’t lose a step. An early double from Florida first baseman Kendyl Lindaman seemed to signal better luck for Florida’s bats, but it was not to be.

Avant never allowed multiple hits in any inning and and no Florida runner advanced past second base. She ended her afternoon with four strikeouts and hits apiece, with one walk and two hit batters. Avant pitched all 14 innings this weekend for Georgia and never allowed a run.

Elizabeth Hightower began on the mound for Florida and rode into Saturday with more momentum than ever after her first career no-hitter against South Florida Sunday. She earned one run or less her previous for outings and hadn’t earned more than two runs since April 3.

That April 3 outing, however, was against this same Georgia team, and the Bulldogs had long memories. Hightower struck the first batter she faced, and a double from second baseman Sydney Kuma and a single from first basmen Lacey Fincher later, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead before Hightower recorded an out.

Her afternoon didn’t improve from there. The Florida ace struck out the next two batters she faced to escape the opening inning without further damage, but Georgia’s Jaiden Fields led off the second inning with her second home run in two days to bump the lead to two runs. Fields finished the two-game series with four hits and two RBIs.

Hightower surrendered a second solo blast in the third inning to center fielder Jayda Kearney to end her afternoon. She earned three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings, although she struck out six of the 14 batters she faced.

Reliever Katie Chronister retired the first four batters she faced to preserve the 3-0 deficit, but Florida’s hopes came undone in a disastrous fifth inning. A two-run home run from Kuma, Georgia’s third of the day, made it a five-run game. Chronister surrendered a walk and two singles in her next four batters to score the sixth and final run, and Florida’s fate was sealed.

The Gators came to the top of the seventh inning with a ticking clock, needing six runs and down to their final three outs. Pinch hitter Kinsey Goelz was hit by one of Avant’s pitches to give Florida a baserunner, but two consecutive groundouts left Chronister, Lindaman and Jamie Hoover to watch their conference rival celebrate on their own field in their final game.

Florida ends with a final record of 45-11 and a share of the regular-season conference title, but no further postseason glory as it failed to advance to the WCWS for the first time since 2016. Head coach Tim Walton and his squad look forward to 2022 and an attempt to begin a new streak.

  • SB: Gators Drop Super Regional Opener to Georgia
Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk.com

Trailing by one run entering the seventh inning, Florida right-hander Natalie Lugo allowed a walk and an infield single before Georgia catcher Payden Bordeau hit a three-run shot to open up a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom half, Bulldogs pitcher Mary Wilson Avant threw a one-two-three inning to cap off her 16th complete game this season.

Following three straight NCAA Regional victories last weekend, No. 4 Florida dropped game one of its Super Regional to Georgia 4-0 Friday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

After two hitless innings, Georgia right fielder Jaiden Fields led off the top of the third with a solo shot — her sixth home run this year — to center field.

The Gators drew a pair of walks in the bottom of the third but failed to get on the scoreboard. An inning later, first baseman Kendyl Lindaman hit a one-out double, but two quick outs stranded her in scoring position.

In the top of the fifth, Lugo found herself in a no-out, bases-loaded jam until she forced a groundout to third baseman Charla Echols. Echols got the force out at home before catcher Julia Cottrill threw a laser to third base where shortstop Sarah Longley applied the tag to pull off a clutch double play.

Florida managed only two baserunners across the final three frames. Center fielder Cheyenne Lindsey singled in the fifth inning and Lindaman — who provided Florida’s only offensive spark — knocked her second double of the game in the sixth.

  • BSB: Aleman, Gators Cruise Past Bama into SEC Tournament Semis

    Photo via SEC Media Portal

Franco Aléman waited until postseason to spin his best game of the season. Aléman cruised through seven shutout innings in leading Florida to the SEC Tournament semifinals. The Gators have won their first three games in an SEC Tournament for the first time since 2000 and will be rewarded with a day off before playing on Saturday.

    How It Happened:

For five innings, this ball game was a pitcher’s duel with neither side relenting. Aléman was matched by Alabama’s Dylan Smith.

The Gators finally broke through in the sixth when Nathan Hickey belted a solo homer to straight away center, just left of the 405 foot indicator and off the make-shift batters eye.

Florida tacked on three more runs in the seventh as Cory Acton doubled home Sterlin Thompson. After Acton stole third, Mac Guscette recorded an RBI groundout to increase the lead to 3-0. Jacob Young followed with a solo homer to left and suddenly the Gators were ahead 4-0.

Florida added three more insurance runs in the eighth as Thompson and Acton each recorded RBI singles (Acton’s scored two).

Aléman, however, cruised through seven innings of work, finishing with 92 pitches. Trey Van Der Weide took over in the eighth and immediately retired the side in order.

Despite the 7-0 lead entering the bottom of the ninth, Florida kept their fans on edge.

Jack Leftwich entered on the mound and allowed two runs before forcing a fly out to right by Caden Rose to end the ballgame.

With the win, Florida earns a day off before the semifinals begin on Saturday.

Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan suggested that either Christian Scott or Brandon Sproat would start on the mound. O’Sullivan also iterated that Tommy Mace, Hunter Barco, and Franco Aléman were done for the weekend and wouldn’t see action regardless of availability on Sunday in a potential championship game appearance.

    Pitching Decision:

    • W: Franco Aléman (2-4)
    • L: Dylan Smith (1-8)

    Individual Stats:

    • Acton: 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, R
    • Thompson: 3-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R
    • Young: 3-5, HR, RBI, R
    • Hickey: 2-5, HR, RBI, R
    • Aleman: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 4 K, BB

    On Deck:

Florida will know their semifinal opponent Friday evening. They will take on the winner of the Tennessee – Alabama game. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start on Saturday and will be aired live on SEC Network.

  • Gators Land Commitment From 4-Star CB Julian Humphrey

Photo by Andrew Ivins | 247Sports

Florida head coach Dan Mullen received some positive buzz on the recruiting trail Thursday. Four-star cornerback Julian Humphrey announced his commitment to the program just six weeks after being offered.

Humphrey is a 6’1, 185 lb prospect from Houston, Texas that attends Clear Lake High. In 2020, he recorded 24 tackles and 8 pass breakups in addition to an interception.

Humphrey is rated as a 4-star prospect according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He is listed as the No. 135 overall prospect and No. 16 CB in the recruiting cycle. Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas Tech were among many schools to offer him.

New Florida assistant coach Jules Montinar was most heavily involved in Humphrey’s recruitment. The top-150 prospect is expected to make an official visit to Gainesville on June 11.

Humphrey is now the highest rated prospect in Florida’s 2022 class. He becomes the sixth prospect committed to Mullen’s program.

  • BSB: Jud Fabian Projected First Round Pick in Latest MLB.com Mock

    Photo via SEC Media Portal

MLB.com released their latest 2021 MLB mock draft on Wednesday and the Florida Gators were represented with a selection in the first round.

Gators centerfielder Jud Fabian is projected to be selected with the No. 19 pick by the Toronto Blue Jays.

“Fabian has overcome severe swing-and-miss issues earlier in the season to challenge for the NCAA Division I home run lead while remaining one of the best college athletes available, so he has played his way back into the first round.”

The Ocala, FL native has slugged 20 homers and driven in 46 runs while hitting at a .252 clip.

Additionally, Fabian has an insane amount of leverage despite his strikeout rate and lower than desired average. Fabian still has two years of eligibility (thanks to 2020 Covid season), he enrolled early, so his age wouldn’t be older than next year’s class, and his brother Deric is a member of the UF 2021 signing class.

Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan has stated numerous times that Fabian is one of the true five-tool players he’s coached.

Note: Florida signee Andrew Painter (RHP, Fort Lauderdale) is projected to be selected with the No. 22 pick by the Chicago White Sox.

  • BSB: Gators Rout Mississippi State at SEC Tournament

    Final: Florida 13, Mississippi State 1 (7)

    Photo via SEC Media Portal

Before the crowd could even get settled in for Wednesday morning’s Gators baseball game, the Florida bats had awakened.

Florida advanced in the winners bracket at the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama behind an offensive explosion and a gem from Hunter Barco.

    How It Happened:

Florida scored early and often on Wednesday as they went on to rout the No. 8 team in the nation.

The Gators scored in the first inning after loading the bases to lead off the game. Florida gave away momentum by only plating one run on a wild pitch in the inning and situational hitting again proved to be lacking for this team. Until the second and third innings, that is.

After Mississippi State evened things in the bottom of first, Florida tacked on eight runs over the next two innings to make the game a blow out. Kris Armstrong had a pair of two-rbi hits (single in the second and double in the third) and Sterlin Thompson added a solo homer in the third as well.

The Gators took a 9-1 advantage to the bottom of the third before adding four more in the seventh to clinch a run-rule victory.

After Sterlin Thompson squeezed his glove on the final out, a weak fly ball to right, there was a look of confusion on several players’ faces. Hunter Barco stated after the game, “I had no idea there were run-rules in college baseball.”

Barco tossed a gem. He threw all seven innings while only allowing just four hits and one run. Barco iterated that this wasn’t his best stuff, but obviously it got the job done.

    Pitching Decision:

    • W: Hunter Barco (10-2)
    • L: Brandon Smith (4-3)

    Individual Stats:

    • Rivera: 4-5, RBI, 2 R
    • Armstrong: 3-4, 2B, 4 RBI, R, BB
    • Hickey: 3-5, 3 R
    • Thompson: 2-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R
    • Barco: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB

    On Deck:

Florida will take on Alabama in the winner’s bracket after the Tide defeated Tennessee 3-2 in 11 innings on Wednesday.

The Crimson Tide is now 31-22 on the season and finished league play at 12-17.
