• Preview: Florida vs South Carolina

Gainesville, FL – The third-ranked Florida Gators will play host to the South Carolina Gamecocks in their first game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium this Saturday. Although Dan Mullen is two-for-two against Will Muschamp in his time as the Gators’ head coach, both meetings have been competitive. In his first season, Mullen’s team came from behind twice, prompting a now infamous gesture by former Gators’ quarterback, Feleipe Franks. Last season, the two teams battled through sloppy conditions before Kyle Trask eventually found his rhythm and led the Gators to victory.

Ironically, the last time the Gators reached No. 3 in the polls, they dominated the Gamecocks, 44-11 in the following week. Why is that ironic? Well, that’s because Will Muschamp was Florida’s head coach at the time. The Gators will be looking for a similar result on Saturday as they go for their 29th win over the Cocks. Florida leads the all-time series, 28-9-3 and holds a 15-2 record when facing Carolina at The Swamp.

After opening as 22.5 point favorites, the Gators have seen that line drop to -18.5. However, this game could be a little closer than anticipated if the Florida defense doesn’t show considerable improvement over last week. Typically a strength, the Gators defense yielded over 600 yards and five touchdowns last week in Oxford, Mississippi. To be fair, there were several Gators’ defenders that weren’t on the field for various reasons. But Florida will need a much better showing, especially in pass defense, if they intend to cover the spread.

The return of Shawn Davis, who was ejected for targeting in the opening series last week, should help the Gators by providing the corners with a little more veteran support from the safety position. Meanwhile, Ventrell Miller recorded 15 tackles last week and will need to duplicate his performance to help disrupt Mike Bobo’s offensive strategy of running to set up the passing game.

As long as Florida’s front seven can keep containment and show improved fundamentals when tackling, they should have their way with a fledgling Gamecocks offensive line. Last week, South Carolina mustered just 89 yards on the ground, continuing a trend of sub-100 yard games that extends three games deep into last season. Creating similar disruption in the running game will be the first step in bringing the Gamecocks offense to a halt.

Beyond stopping a struggling rushing attack, Florida will need to lock down a pair of electric receivers. Shi Smith and Xavier Legette can make plays when they are needed the most. The pair combined for 202 yards in last week’s matchup against Tennessee and were a major reason that the Gamecocks still had a chance late in the game. However, if Florida finds themselves in a shootout, we know that they’ve got the guns to win.

Kyle Trask and Kyle Pitts will do what Kyle’s do. Even Muschamp has conceded that. But, as we saw last week, they aren’t the only playmakers at Dan Mullen’s disposal. In fact, Trask completed passes to 11 different receivers, seven of which hauled in multiple receptions. As if that weren’t enough, the Gators have a running game, ladies and gentleman!

In a running back by committee effort, Florida totaled 195 yards on the ground. This is a much welcomed sight for Gators fans, as it is a sign of a much improved offensive line. The unit that ranked No. 122 in the country last season got off to a grand start, protecting Trask and opening holes for each of Florida’s talented ball carriers.

Whether we see defensive dominance from the Gators or an offensive shootout, I think Florida wins this one. They will cover the spread and leave The Swamp with their second win of the season, 49-28.

The Gators kickoff their home schedule against the Gamecocks at noon EST this Saturday. Television coverage will be provided by ESPN.

  • SOC: Gators open season with draw against Georgia

Photo by Kristen Oliff / ChompTalk.com

Gainesville, Fla— For their first game of the 2020 season, the Florida Gators settled for a 1-1 draw against the Georgia Bulldogs on at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

    About the game

Both teams managed to fire off a total of 29 shots, therefore the goalkeepers proved to be the key players of the game as Georgia’s goalie Emory Wegener stopped the ball from getting in seven times; Florida’s goalkeeper, Susi Espinoza, made four great saves.

    First Half

Only 12 minutes into the game, Florida senior Deanne Rose scored the first game for the Gators. Rose chased down and created space with the ball after being served by Georgia Eaton-Collins from the center circle in the UF half.

Rose right-footed a seven-yard shot and beat Wegener to score at the far corner for a 1-0 Gators lead.

Twenty minutes into the first period, The Gators failed to add to the lead despite a nice attempt on a freekick by Laney Steed.

Three minutes later, Wegener saved the Bulldogs after confusion in Georgia’s box.The Gators did not stop creating chances as Tori Gamble shot from outside the box at the 31-minute mark.

In the 41st minute, Gator defenders lost the ball. 2019 top goal scorer for Georgia, Chole Chapman, intercepted a pass, broke toward goal alone, and won the duel with UF’s goalkeeper to tie the game 1-1.

    Second Half

Florida Gators started the second period with more momentum. Three minutes into the second half Wenger was once again called on to make a key stop.

Espinoza’ save knocked out Abby Boyan’s chance against the Gators in the 49th minute.

In the 69th minute, Espinoza saved the Gators again after redirecting Dany Murguia’s shot.

In the last 25 seconds, the Gator almost scored their second goal of the match, but Collins’ shot was saved by Wegener for a final score of 1-1.

    Post-Game Reaction

Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh recognized that the team needs to improve its technical ability, tactics and build momentum in a real week leading up to a game.

It was the team first game in a very long time, but Burleigh thought that the Gators competed hard.

“It was a really physical game. That is something that is hard to prepare for in training because that’s not necessarily our style of play. And the fact that we were able to step up and handle that says a lot of good things about us.” Coach Burleigh said.

As for Espinoza, she was hoping for another another shutout.

She also expressed her disappointment after the Bulldogs scored.

“When I saw her on the breakaway, I tried my best to cover the angle. I did not think it was anything we wouldn’t be able to come back from. It happens, but we knew we could turn around and get back after it.” Espinoza said

  • Trask, Pitts lead Gators to rout of Ole Miss

Photo by Nick Tre. Smith / Getty Images

The Florida Gators entered the 2020 season with national title expectations. After one game, those expectations appear justified.

Behind the arm of redshirt senior QB Kyle Trask, the Gators routed Mississippi in both team’s season opener on Saturday. Florida defeated the Rebels 51-35.

Trask finished the game 30-42 for 416 yards and six touchdowns. TE Kyle Pitts had a monster day, hauling in eight passes for 170 yard and four scores. In all, the Gators recorded 642 yards of total offense, a program record.

    How It Happened:

The Gators struck first on a one yard score from Trask to Pitts. Pitts actually went back for the ball before bowling his way into the end zone.

The Rebels answered with a 7 play, 75 yard drive that resulted in a 46 yard pass from Matt Corral to Desmond Drummond.

The two teams traded scores in the first half until a 16 yard touchdown grab by Pitts with :05 left after a perfectly executed two-minute drill.

Florida struck first in the second half, on a 71 yard pass to a wide open Pitts. The Rebels once again rebounded, though. Possessing the ball for just 36 seconds, Ole Miss found the end zone with Jerrion Early slicing through for 18 yards.

Florida K Evan McPherson knocked down three straight field goals, including one from 55 yards away, to extend the lead to 44-21.

Both teams traded scores in the fourth quarter, with Ole Miss finding the end zone with :58 on the clock to reach a final score of 51-35.

    Key Takeaways:

    • The Trask-Pitts connection is real.
    • Florida still has a ton of talent at WR.
    • Dameon Pierce and Malik Davis will likely split carries at RB.
    • Brenton Cox and Ventrell Miller are studs on defense.
    • The defensive backfield struggled mightily.

    Team Stats:

    • Total Yards: 642
    • Passing Yards: 446
    • Rushing Yards: 196

    The Ugly:

Florida lost starting safety Shawn Davis on Ole Miss’s first drive due to targeting. As a result (hopefully), the secondary struggled mightily. Former Florida commit Matt Corral threw for 395 yards. Rebels WR Elijah Moore (who should have attracted CB1 duties) had an excellent afternoon against the Florida secondary. Moore hauled in ten catches for 227 yards.

    What’s next:

Florida will host South Carolina in their home opener. The Gamecocks will face Tennessee Saturday evening to kickoff their season.

The game is slated for a noon kickoff and will be televised on ESPN.

Finally, the wait is over. The Gators will officially open their 2020 soccer season when they welcome the No. 8 Georgia Bulleogs at noon on Sunday at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
The SEC postponed UF’s season-opening game, originally planned on Saturday, Sept. 19 again Missouri, because three Gators tested positive for COVID-19. Everyone on the team quarantined to prevent the spread of the virus.COVID-19 has not only changed the date of the game against the Missouri Tigers.

It has changed the structure of college athletics for the fall semester. For the 2020 fall SEC programs, each team will play a total of eight games in the regular season. After the regular season matches, all 14 teams will make their final appearance of the season in Orange Beach, Alabama, in Nov 13-22 where each team will play at least two games.
    About the Gators
The No. 6 Florida Gators will return to action with 34 players, including ten freshmen and two transfers. Nine starters from the 2019 team who made the program’s 22nd NCAA appearance will return this year, including three who earned All-SEC honors, Kit Loferski, Parker Roberts, and Deanne Rose.
Four high school All-American’s Tori Grambo, Izzy Kadzban, Delaney Tauzel, and Sydney Urban are among Florida’s talented freshman class. The Gators will have the service of the winner Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Soccer in Tauzel (United Soccer Coaches).
The Gators can also count on their two transfers. Ansley Frazier ( from Massachusetts) and junior Shaye Seyffart (from Villanova). Seyffart played in every match of the last two seasons for the Wildcats.
    About the Bulldogs
Georgia has returned with 10 seniors, including its four senior captains Ashley Andersen, Mollie Belisle, Kayla Bruster, and Katie Higgins. The Bulldogs will also have the service of their 10 juniors, 10 sophomores, and seven freshmen. Georgia’s best weapon is between the posts. Goalkeeper Cecily Stoute holds the record for most starts among active goalkeepers in the SEC.

The Gators lead 30-3-1. However, the Bulldogs won the last meeting at Athens Stadium last year. It should also be noted that No. 8 Georgia opened its 2020 season with a win over South Carolina.

  • Staff Predictions: Gators vs Ole Miss

Photo by Rob Foldy / Getty Images

The 2020 season is finally set to get underway. The Gators will travel to Mississippi to take on the Rebels of Ole Miss.

Here are our staff’s predictions for the 2020 season opener:

Ainslie Lee: A big third quarter bolsters Florida in this one. A slow start is expected, but for both teams, naturally. I trust Mullen when he says he believes they could’ve taken the field weeks ago. The Gators will look significantly more polished than the Rebels, especially as Kyle Trask and UF’s offense finds their rhythm. Plumlee will have his way with Todd Grantham’s defense early, but adjustments will be made and the Rebs will have to look to their unproven passing attack. Florida covers the spread and then some. 35-17, Florida.

Angel Wells: The Gators will need to establish the ground game early as they take on the Rebels in Oxford. I expect Florida to start slow in the first half due to a shortened off-season. Injuries may become a factor in this matchup due to the lack of proper off-season training as well. However, I believe the Gators prevail over an optimistic Ole Miss team in nail-biting fashion. Gators win,27-23.

Brian Fox: Florida enters the game as a 14.5 point favorite. While the Gators are certainly the more talented, deeper team, the spread seems ridiculous to me. With little spring practice and a short fall camp, I expect an ugly, slow start. Florida rolls, but it should be closer than two touchdowns. Gators, 27-20.

David Soderquist: I think Florida covers the spread here. Florida has experience returning on the offensive side of the ball at quarterback and some elite pass catchers in the backfield. Ole miss has lost a lot on defense but returns some key players on offense and Plumlee has flashed his abilities as well. Will be a battle at the beginning but Florida’s defense ultimately wins this game for UF. Gators win, 34-17.

Michael Pfeffer: Ole Miss has a winning record against the Gators. They are 12-11-1 and have won three of the last five meetings. They also have home field advantage. But let me tell you what else they have. They have a brand new head coach that has had very little time to implement his new offensive scheme. They have had an enormous problem with COVID-19 which has further limited their preparations for the season. And they have a secondary that is a little suspect. On the other hand, Florida has a proven starting quarterback, lots of weapons on both sides of the ball, and Dan Mullen. I like the Gators in this one. Gators win, 35-17.

Payton Titus: I think Florida feels it has something to prove in 2020. Its players have been itching to line up against anyone not in Gators garb for weeks now. Florida’s No. 5 AP Poll ranking is the highest slot it’s filled since 2012. All of the preseason accolades, like being pegged as the next SEC East champions in the SEC Media Poll, and anticipation for the matchup have the Gators riled up. Between the new leadership in coach Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss and the return of key Florida players in Trask and Kyle Pitts, I say Florida takes this one. I’m not sure if we’ll see a blowout we’ll see in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Saturday since both teams have some dust to shake off that accumulated over this prolonged offseason. However, I definitely don’t think it will be close. Gators win, 27-14.

Florida and Mississippi are set for a noon (ET) kickoff from Oxford, MS. The game will be televised on ESPN.

What do you think will be the final score?

  • Preview: Florida vs Ole Miss
Photo by Jonathan Bachman / Getty Images

The Florida Gators will finally kickoff the 2020 SEC football season this Saturday in Oxford, MS. This will be the first time that Dan Mullen has faced the Rebels since his final season at Mississippi State, where he boasted a 5-4 record vs. the in-state rival. Florida opened as a -12.5 point favorite against Lane Kiffin’s new team, but has since seen the spread grow to -14.5.

With no spring football, a shortened fall camp, and an early kickoff (11:00 am local time), this game has the potential for a shaky start. However, Florida has a major advantage in that this is Mullen’s third year with the team and he has a solid starting quarterback in Kyle Trask. Although the Gators will need to replace the production that they lost when LaMical Perine, Van Jefferson, and Freddie Swain left for the NFL, they still have a few proven playmakers and a couple that show promise as well.

Right out of the gate, tight end, Kyle Pitts is a mismatch every time he’s on the field. With his large frame, soft hands, and deceptive speed, Pitts will be a favorite target throughout the season. In addition to Pitts, the Gators boast a receiving corps that, if lacking in experience, makes up for it in explosiveness.

The receivers will be led by Trevon Grimes and Penn State transfer, Justin Shorter. When you add Jacob Copeland and a healthy and much improved Kadarius Toney, this unit should have its way with an Ole Miss secondary that allowed 278 yards per game through the air last season.

The biggest question mark for the Gators, entering this game, is the offensive line. Last season, John Hevesy’s group ranked 122nd in run blocking. With a full season under their belts, early reports out of camp have been positive that this group will be much improved. If they can maintain the same level of pass protection that they offered last season while also generating some push in the ground game, defenses beware.

A balanced attack by Dan Mullen’s offense could produce a lot of points. Looking to benefit from any gains made by the offensive line will be running backs Damien Pierce, Malik Davis, and Miami transfer, Lorenzo Lingard. While it remains unclear how many touches each back will receive, Mullen tends to rotate often, allowing them to stay fresh throughout the game. If the reports from fall camp are true, Malik Davis could be in for a special season, and that is music to the ears of Gator Nation.

As a true freshman, Davis electrified Gators fans before having his season cut short due to a knee injury. Before the injury, Davis averaged 6.7 YPC, gaining 526 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 79 carries. Additionally, he hauled in 7 receptions totaling 58 yards.

Defensively, the Gators will have one of the nation’s best secondaries and a defensive line that appears to have just reloaded from last season. Facing off against a very talented group of receivers, the secondary will have to make a statement early. Lane Kiffin is known for creative offensive play calling and will likely attempt to catch the Gators off guard with some early chicanery. If they can stay focused and stick to their fundamentals, Florida should take control in the third quarter. I think Florida covers the spread, winning 35-17.

The game will be broadcast live from Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium in Oxford, MS. on ESPN. Kickoff is at 12 pm EST.

  • OL Ethan White to miss opener, CB Ethan Pouncey to miss season

Photo by Kan Li / 247Sports

Florida head coach Dan Mullen spoke to the media Monday afternoon and offered that OL Ethan White and CB Ethan Pouncey have suffered injuries that will keep them out of the season opening game against Mississippi on Saturday.

White, a sophomore who was expected to start at center, injured his knee and underwent surgery earlier in camp. Mullen said he expects White back with the team shortly.

Pouncey, a true freshman from Winter Park, FL, underwent hip surgery and will miss the entire season. Pouncey was a 4-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class.

In addition to these two, the Gators will be without freshman defenders Lamar Goods (foot) and Fenley Graham (broken arm).

Florida opens the season at Mississippi on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for noon (ET) and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
