• Is it time for Dan Mullen to stop California Dreamin’?
    Photo via Getty Images

“I think we have a national brand,” said Florida head coach Dan Mullen shortly after taking the reigns of the Gators football program (as reported by 247Sports). “Our focus is always going to be within the state of Florida, but we also have a national brand trying to go out and recruit the top players from America.”

Mullen and his staff have certainly traveled the country, offering many of the highest ranked prospects in the 2019 recruiting class. Clearly, California has been a key destination for this staff as no less than thirty Golden State prospects have been offered scholarships by Florida.

But, has Mullen forgotten his own state in his pursuit of landing a top class?

The state of Florida has 39 prospects in the 247Sports Top-250. The Gators currently have commitments from zero of those thirty-nine.

If that isn’t alarming enough, in-state rivals Florida State (7) and Miami (5) are crushing it on the in-state trail. In fact, Clemson (2), Georgia (1), Penn State (1), Oregon (1), and even Mullen’s former boss, Urban Meyer (Ohio State, 1) have all landed more commits from the top prospects in the state.

None of this would matter if Florida had landed a few of these west coast recruits. Unfortunately, to this point, it hasn’t happened.

In the last three weeks, Florida has missed on four prospects from outside Florida’s usual recruiting footprint.

On June 20, #1 CB prospect Derek Stingley (Baton Rouge, LA) chose LSU over Florida. July 6 brought a pair of disappoinments as #11 TE Jahleel Billingsley (Chicago) chose Alabama and #5 CB Chris Steele (Bellflower, CA) committed to USC. Most recently, on Thursday, #10 TE Ethan Rae (Orange, CA) announced his commitment to USC.

As of the publishing of this piece, Florida has landed only one 2019 prospect outside the SEC footprint (4-star QB Jalon Jones). The Gators currently rank #31 in the 247Sports recruiting rankings, one spot behind powerhouse, (sarcasm) Duke.

Yes, Dan Mullen is at a new school, but that can’t absolve him of Florida’s current recruiting situation.

    Why?

Because Willie Taggart is the new head coach at Florida State and the Seminoles sit at #12 in the rankings. Furthermore, Mississippi State, the school Mullen left for Florida, is sitting far ahead of the Gators at #11.

Mullen can correct all this, and by no means is this recruiting season a lost cause. Florida is firmly in the mix for several local top prospects and Friday Night Lights is right around the corner. Landing 5-star RB Trey Sanders, 4-star CB Kaiir Elam, 4-star CB Tyrique Stevenson, and 4-star TE Keon Zipperer would make The Gator Nation forget the summertime woes.

It may be time for Mullen to quit ‘California Dreamin’. As David Waters of Gators Breakdown told me, “The Florida ‘brand’ had taken a hit, and while these (west coast) recruits had a lot of good things to say about UF, asking a recruit to come across country when the program has been struggling is asking a lot. Even when the Gators are winning, it’s hard to pull out of California. I think Mullen could have underestimated that Florida isn’t what it once was.”

Waters continued, “UF should make the biggest effort in the state of Florida. You’re in a talent rich state, nail that down.

Hopefully, the time spent out west was not at the expense of the in-state recruits.”

*Chomp Talk would like to express a sincere appreciation to David Waters for providing his opinion on this subject.

The time has come. Tim Tebow will be inducted into the Ring of Honor at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on October 6. The honor will coincide with the University’s celebrating of the 10-year anniversary of the 2008 National Championship team.

Tebow becomes the sixth member of the Ring of Honor. Wilber Marshall was the most recent addition in 2007. The Ring of Honor debuted in 2006 with four receipients; Steve Spurrier, Jack Youngblood, Emmit Smith, and Danny Wuerffel.

Tebow’s dispay will be 18 feet by 5 feet and located with the others along the North end zone of the stadium.

Tebow finished his four year collegiate career with 9,285 passing yards to go along with 88 touchdowns to only 16 interceptions.

Tebow was also incredibly prolific in the run game. He accumulated 2,947 rushing yards and scored an SEC-record 57 touchdowns on the ground. In his Heisman-winning season, Tebow tallied 23 rushing scores.

Tebow is often cited as one of the top college football players of all-time and spent time in the NFL, and was even a first round draft pick by the Denver Broncos in 2010.

Tebow is currently playing baseball and is working his way through the New York Mets’ organization.

  • Chris Chiozza and Devin Robinson making mark in NBA Summer League play

A pair of former Gators are turning heads in Las Vegas during NBA Summer League play, and they are doing it as teammates once again.

Second year swingman Devin Robinson is leading the Wizards in scoring through three games, while rookie point guard Chris Chiozza leads the entire league in assists.

Robinson, who was on a two-way contract with Washington last season, shot 4-11 en route a team high 14 points to open the Summer League for the Wizards. On Sunday, Robinson went for 24 on 9-18 shooting, once again leading the team. Robinson added 22 points in thirty minutes of action helping the Wizards to their first victory over Philadelphia on Monday. Robinson made eight of his ten shot attempts.

Chiozza has been Washington’s starting point guard in each game. In the opener against Cleveland on Friday, Chiozza possibly exhibited some nerves, finishing with 5 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds, but also turning the ball over six times. In Sunday’s tight contest with San Antonio, Chiozza completed a double-double with ten points and eleven assists. In the win against the 76ers on Monday, Chiozza had a solid effort with 7 points to go along with 11 assists while only turning the ball over twice.

Robinson is looking to crack the Wizards’ 15-man roster in 2018-19 while Chiozza’s best hope appears to be on another NBA roster. The Wizards are loaded with depth at the guard position that features former Gator Bradley Beal and All-Pro John Wall. The Wizards also recently acquired G Austin Rivers to add to the backcourt depth.

Robinson averaged 8.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in his three seasons at Florida, before declaring for the NBA Draft after his junior season.

Chiozza played four years in Gainesville, finally becoming a regular in the starting lineup for his senior year. As a senior, Chiozza averaged 11.1 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per contest and helped Florida to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

    Photo via 247Sports

As the month of June was coming to an end, the Gators 2019 recruitment certainly was not. On June 20, Florida landed Riley Simonds, a three-star offensive lineman out of Buford, GA. Simonds stands at nearly 6-foot,4-inches and weighs in at 300+ pounds. The Gators were among three schools that Simonds had been really considering; the other two being Virginia Tech and Missouri.

Simonds is ranked by 247Sports composite rankings as the #16 OG in the 2019 recruiting cycle.

“I picked Florida because of the education, the football, and I knew it was best for my future,” Simonds said.

When he gets to the University next year his plan is to study broadcasting and journalism. He knew that Florida was not only the best place to continue his football career but his education as well. He said he was really looking for the best school and education, but also the best fan support.

Simonds has been playing football since he was five years old. However, before he was allowed to even play his parents made him learn how to read and write. The desire to succeed in his education likely comes from them and the installment of the importance of education at such a young age.

Being born and raised in Georgia it is to be expected that he was a fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, along with most of his family. Be that as it may, he is more than dedicated to the Florida Gators now.

“I’m excited to beat the heck out of Georgia,” Simonds said. “I’m always gonna be ready for game day but when we play them, I don’t even know if I’ll be able to sleep, I’ll be so excited.

Despite receiving an offer from Jim McElwain‘s staff at Florida, the Gators weren’t really on Simonds’ radar until Dan Mullen took over.

Mullen offered Simonds in May of 2017 while at Mississippi State, and according to Simonds, “Mullen was talking to me the whole time (while transitioning to Florida).” The two have a pretty good relationship, which was impactful when it came to committing to UF.

We won’t be seeing Simonds until next year after he graduates high school, however, this is a young man that is worth the wait and will add a toughness to the offensive line and help usher in this new era of Gators Football.

He is passionate about Florida and is dedicated to the decision he made and we should all be excited that he chose the Orange and Blue.

“I’d like to let Gator Nation know that I’m 100 percent committed to Florida,” Simonds said. “I am going to do whatever it takes to bring them a ring.”

  • FB: 3-star OLB Jesiah Pierre commits to Gators
Photo by Andrew Ivins / 247Sports

The Florida Gators picked up a commitment from an in-state prospect on Sunday.

OLB Jesiah Pierre, a 6’2, 220 lb prospect from Mount Dora, announced his commitment to Florida via Twitter.

Pierre is the #42 ranked OLB and the #653 overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting cycle.

Pierre had been committed to Miami for nearly two years before decommitting in May.

Pierre has been on campus for three unofficial visits, including Junior Day in February, since landing the Gators offer January 22.

Pierre has made 131 tackles and recorded 4.5 sacks in the last two years according to 247Sports. In addition, Pierre has forced seven fumbles and recovered six.

Pierre also had offers from Miami, North Carolina, Mississippi, and East Carolina.

UPDATE: After rumors of the coaching staff not accepting Pierre’s commitment, head coach Dan Mullen did retweet Pierre’s tweet, indicating that he has accepted Jesiah Pierre’s pledge to the program.

  • Tim Tebow named Eastern League All-Star
    Photo via The Associated Press

Heisman Trophy winner. Two-time National Champion. NFL First round draft pick. NFL playoff game winner (as a starting quarterback).

Of all the accomplishments of Timothy Richard Tebow, perhaps his latest is the most impressive.

At thirty years old, Tebow was named an All-Star in the Double-A Eastern League. Tebow is a prospect in the New York Mets organization with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and has been lauded for his work ethic.

Tebow is in his second year of professional baseball and has found his groove. While hitting at a .261 clip for the year, he has slashed .318/.357/.455 in June. Tebow hadn’t played baseball since his junior year in high school before holding a tryout in front of all thirty teams in August of 2016.

Players, managers, and scouts are now saying that Tebow has the look of a professional baseball player. This is a far cry different from even spring training when many believed he was overmatched and didn’t deserve to be promoted to Double-A ball.

The Eastern League All-Star game will be played Wednesday, July 11 at 7:00 PM. For more information on the All-Star festivities, click here.

  • Peter Alonso crushes first Triple-A homer vs Reno

The New York Mets’ #4 prospect has gotten off to a fast start since his promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas on June 14.

Peter Alonso has recorded a base hit in six of his first seven games. On Saturday, Alonso hit his first career Triple-A home run against the Reno Aces.

Alonso drove the first pitch of his second at-bat against Reno lefty Alex Young over the centerfield wall for a solo homer that tied the game at two.

Since arriving in Las Vegas, Alonso has hit at a .273 clip in the 6 games (22 AB) to go along with four RBI prior to Saturday’s contest. Alonso hit fourth in his Triple-A debut, but has found a home in the three spot since.

Alonso earned a promotion after 71 games in Binghamton, NY. Alonso was hitting .310 while leading the league with 15 homers at the time of his promotion.

UPDATE: Alonso finished the game 3-5 with a whopping three homers and seven RBI in the 51s 14-11 win.

Alonso’s second and third shots were off Reno releiver Bradin Hagens. His sixth inning bomb was a grand slam that brought the 51s within one run of the Aces.

The eighth inning blast was a two-run shot that provided necessary insurance runs and extended the lead to 14-11.

  • BSB: Gators survive, advance in CWS with 9-6 win over Texas Tech

    RUNS HITS ERRORS

OMAHA, NE– The Florida Gators are one of three SEC teams to make it to the CWS’ Final Four. The Gators will now attempt to take two games from Arkansas to earn a berth to the CWS Finals.

Despite jumping to a 5-0 lead by the seventh, a questionable decision by Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan allowed for dramatic seventh and eighth frames.

Florida got out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth despite not recording a hit. SEC Player of the Year Jonathan India drew a leadoff walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. India then stole third before scoring on another wild pitch.

Florida struck for a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth highlighted by JJ Schwarz’s two-run blast to left field to put Florida on top 5-0 in the sixth inning.

O’Sullivan gambled with the Gators’ season on the line in the seventh inning. TTU’s Cameron Warren led the frame off with a double off Leftwich. Two batters later Braxton Fulford singled to put runners on first and third with one out. O’Sullivan turned the ball over to sophomore Andrew Baker with a pair of lefties due up. Baker, however, was unable to do the job. Baker walked Gabe Holt then allowed a single to Brian Klein before O’Sullivan made the move to freshman Tommy Mace. Mace allowed a single to the best hitter in the Red Raiders lineup, Josh Jung which made the score 5-2. An error by Deacon Liput on a sharp grounder by Grant Little scored another run and forced “Sully” to call for fellow freshman Jordan Butler. Butler got out of the inning with a strikeout of Zach Rheams (swung at ball four on the third strike) and a liner to right by Michael Davis that was hit sharply, but right at Wil Dalton.

The gamble? Not only did O’Sullivan not make the move to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year, Michael Byrne, with the game very much in limbo, but he wasn’t even in the bullpen for much of the threat. With the season on the line, how do you not put your best available player in the game?

Florida would score three insurance runs in the eighth to take a 8-3 lead. Brady Smith, starting at catcher for his offensive ability, crushed an RBI triple off the top of the wall and scored on Nick Horvath’s single to center.

Even with a five run deficit, Texas Tech wouldn’t go down quietly. The Red Raiders added three runs, including two after Byrne entered with the bases loaded and a four run lead.

Florida added an insurance run in the ninth, and Byrne finished the Red Raiders off.

The Gators will play Arkansas, and must win two to advance to the CWS Finals that would begin on Monday.

Freshman RHP Jack Leftwich toed the rubber for the Gators to start the game and pitched a terrific game after escaping a second inning, bases loaded jam. Leftwich threw 6.1 innings while striking out five (his two earned runs were given up by the bullpen). Leftwich had thrown 54 pitches in the first two innings, but bounced back to get through more than six innings in helping Florida advance against a top offense in Texas Tech.

India finished 1-3 with a pair of walks and two runs scored while Blake Reese went 2-4 with an RBI at bat. Dalton finished 2-5 at the dish.

Florida took the regular season series against Arkansas 2-1 in Gainesville. However, the Gators fell 8-2 to the Razorbacks in the SEC Tournament.

Florida will be the home team for the contest scheduled for an 8:00 PM ET start on Friday.

    W: Leftwich (5-5)

    L: Caleb Kilian (9-3)

    S: Byrne
