• WGYM Liveblog: No. 3 Florida at No. 29 Georgia for Rivalry Night
Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk

It’s time to bring out one of the best rivalries in the SEC again, as Florida heads to Athens to face the Georgia Gymdogs tonight!

If you’ve read the title of this blog, you can probably guess how tonight is going to go. Georgia’s not looking so hot this year – they have a few key gymnasts injured, and as a whole, the team does not look as well-prepared as it has in the past. To be fair, the Gymdogs have only had one meet so far, as last week’s matchups were canceled for COVID protocols, but the team’s only 9.9+ score so far this season belongs to Megan Roberts on vault.

In contrast… well, if you’re here, you probably know exactly how well the Gators are doing. Last week, Nya Reed and Trinity Thomas notched back-to-back 10s on floor in a come-from-behind win against Alabama, which also featured a third 10, this one from Thomas on vault, and several 9.9+ scores from other athletes, like Megan Skaggs, Leanne Wong, and Sloane Blakely. And that was just in a single meet. Thomas won SEC Specialist of the Week and Wong won SEC Co-Freshman of the Week, and that was all after just barely beating Alabama after having off bars and beam rotations.

In short, it’s highly unlikely that this meet ends with anything other than a Gator W, but never say never. Georgia does lead the all-time series 93-60-1, and there are a few key stories to watch. Roberts is certainly one of their top athletes and should be putting up solid scores, and then there’s the Battle of the Baumanns.

What we once expected to be only a one- or two-time occurrence is now on its fourth occasion: sisters Alyssa and Rachel Baumann committed to rival teams and now compete against each other at least twice a year, once in a dual like tonight and once at SEC Championships. This year’s will be the last, as this is absolutely Alyssa’s final season of eligibility, and it has the potential to be quite interesting. Last season, Alyssa made her all-around debut when the Gators were in a pinch, down several athletes due to COVID protocols. Rachel, meanwhile, has also been training all four and competed AA twice last year. They’ve both been in and out of some lineups, especially bars, but would tonight’s final sisterly competition be worth it to the coaches to let them have a shot?

It all starts at 6pm on SEC Network, but if you can’t watch or don’t have access, we’ll be here providing moment-by-moment breakdowns of the meet as we go.

Full disclosure: I will be on my way home from work for the first rotation. My husband has graciously agreed to pick me up so I’m not watching and driving, but I won’t have the ability to switch back and forth to watch and blog at the same time. I’ll type up a quick rotation summary as soon as I get home, and hopefully we should be good to go for the second rotation as normal.

6:14pm: Hey guys, updating from the road. SECN is BOOKING through these rotations tonight even though the 2nd of their 3 planned meets tonight got postponed indefinitely, but here’s a summary from rotation one.

Georgia is a little sloppy on vault but definitely looks better than Week One. I wish I could give you concrete scores, but unfortunately, the live scoring link is not working and it’s not being shown on screen right now. I do recall that Roberts went 9.925 and Rachel Baumann 9.725, so that should give you some idea.

Florida, on the other hand, had all 9.8s or higher and looked much cleaner on bars than last week overall. McCusker again had some trouble with her dismount, but Thomas and Wong cleaned up in the final two spots with a pair of 9.975s.

AFTER ONE: Gators lead by 0.25!

6:31pm: Made it home! Just in time for the end of rotation 2.

Thomas, VT: Yurchenko 1.5, ooh, came in a little short and had to squat deep to save it. Probably the score they’ll drop.

Roberts, UB: Easily the best routine for Georgia by far. Let’s recap!

Georgia started out alright on bars, some knees and leg separations in places, but then Haley de Jong’s feet slipped off the bar and she had to cover with a kip, and she ended up with a 9.625. However, with hits from Schild and Roberts, they were able to drop that score, but there were some in the 9.7 range they did have to count.

Vault went pretty well for Florida – they started off with Chloi Clark (not Bri Edwards, as the commentators kept repeating) and Skaggs with their lovely fulls. Savannah Schoenherr got another opportunity to try her return to vault post-injury and it went much better, fully upright and well-controlled, and she earned a 9.875 for her efforts. Reed had another excellent vault this week, earning a 9.95, and Wong stuck her Podkopayeva, though some form errors caused her only to score a 9.825. Thomas, unfortunately, had that wonky landing at the end, so the Gators won’t be quite as far ahead of Georgia as they might’ve hoped.

AFTER TWO: UF 98.725, UGA 98.325

6:40pm: Magee, BB: Bhs loso loso, little lean to the side but she covers with a smile. Full turn, fine. Roundoff 1.5, little step. I must’ve missed her dance series because I don’t remember seeing one?

Clapper, FX: Rudi to double stag, kinda bouncy on that landing, traveled a bit in the air. 1.5 to front lay to stag, all lovely and well controlled through there. Switch side to straddle full, nice positions in the air there. Double pike, kinda skids back a little, but she kept it in bounds it looked like?

6:43pm: Cohen, BB: Bhs loso and she’s off, that’s unfortunate. Vivir Mi Vida for beam music though, that’s a fun choice. Switch leap to straddle jump, nice flexibility. Full turn to some choreo, looking confident there. Side aerial to split jump, shaky connection there. Roundoff double full stuck! Good for her, nice recovery.

Hearing Lazzari did travel and she was injured in warmup? That’s not a good sign, considering we didn’t see her at introductions. I wonder if Roethlisberger is misinformed.

Skaggs, FX: Rudi to stag, more in control than Clapper but still a little bouncy. Roundoff 1.5 front lay, so clean. Little wink in the finishing choreo on the floor, it’s so sassy and precise through the whole thing, I’m obsessed.

6:47pm: Schild, BB: Front aerial bhs bhs, and she’s off too. Georgia now counting a fall. Finishes the rest of her routine, but the damage is unfortunately done.

Blakely, FX: Double arabian, step forward, no flag so I think she kept in bounds – commentators disagree with me. Positions on her dance series are lovely! Double tuck, good control there. 1.5 to front lay, nice and clean to finish it out.

6:50pm: Hawthorne, BB: goes for series and falls. Welp. This team is having a beam meltdown. Front toss to wolf jump, that’s nice. Moonwalk, that’s a Georgia tradition for anyone who didn’t know. Roundoff 1.5, stuck the landing.

A Baumann, FX: 1.5 to front full, straight into her choreo, doesn’t give a moment to doubt her. Gorgeous leap series. Double pike to finish, much nicer than last week, good control and plenty of stamina.

6:54pm: de Jong, BB: Switch to split, lovely extension in those. Front aerial to straddle jump, steady. Bhs loso, totally off from the get go and she’s on the floor. Commentator Alicia Sacramone Quinn making a good point that Georgia’s lack of reps in the gym due to COVID could be affecting their stamina.

Reed, FX: DLO is gorgeous, jumps out to a lunge. Rudi to loso, little slide on that front foot there. Double pike, just steps her foot back to the lunge real quick but it looked like she was a little bit leaned forward and underrotated there too. Not as good as last week, but still a great score.

6:58pm: R Baumann, BB: Bhs loso, misses her foot and ends up straddling the beam, which unfortunately still counts as a fall. Full turn from standing, that technique is so bizarre to me but she makes it work. Finishes it out and fights for the stick, but UGA is just in a HOLE now.

Taylor, FX: Goes for her first pass, lands funny on her ankle and she has to stop. Assistant coach Owen Field has to carry her off. God, I hope she’s okay. If it’s true that Lazzari is injured, that’s two in a day. The Gators are deep, but that’s a blow regardless, and you never want to see athletes hurt like that.

AFTER THREE: UF 147.95, UGA 144.95

7:08pm: Skaggs, BB: Single wolf turn, solid. Switch to split, nice and floaty, lovely toes. Bhs loso, so steady. Front aerial, little bobble. Cat leap to switch side, gorgeous. Side aerial to back full, little bounce on the landing. Good start for them. Hopefully everyone else can keep their heads in that game.

Perez-Lugones, FX: Love this floor routine from her. Double pike to open, nice control. So much fire in her choreography. Front half to front full, little stutter step to keep her feet under her. Double tuck, sticks it… almost? Puts her foot out in front of her afterward, like she was a little short, but she doesn’t act like it – finishes strong!

7:12pm: Blakely, BB: Front aerial to bhs, solid. Switch to switch half, looked like she broke the connection there, she may not get credit for that. Side somi, one of her good ones. Side aerial back full stuck! We’ll see if she gets a deduction for not meeting her routine requirements or not.

Magee, FX: Devil Went Down to Georgia routine, here we go. Piked full in to start, nice! Good positions in her dance series. 1.5 to front lay, reeeeally had to pull it around but kept it on her feet. Double pike to finish, another good one. Georgia recovering.

7:15pm: A Baumann, BB: Bhs loso, snaps those arms back, she is not moving. Switch to split, lovely positions in the air. Side aerial, keeps it steady. Full turn, great. Switch half and she FALLS?? This does not happen to Alyssa. Roundoff 1.5, big hop forward. She’s upset.

Roberts, FX: I missed her actual routine construction but it was a big hit, finished with a nice high double pike. She easily looks the best of anyone at Georgia right now.

7:19pm: Wong, BB: Bhs loso, steady. Full turn is fine. Front aerial, little leg up bobble but saves it. Side aerial and side somi are both fine, still not sure why she’s doing both of those? Roundoff double full, swims for the stick but dropped her chest to do so, that’ll still be a deduction.

Lukacs, FX: Double pike to open, gorgeous and high. I miss her double lay. 1.5 to front layout, barely uses half the diagonal for that. Dance series in the corner is tight, I don’t buy that second element in the wolf position. Double tuck to finish, great control and power. That’ll be a great score for them.

7:23pm: Thomas, BB: Split leap to start, lovely. One arm bhs to loso, gorgeous. Front aerial to beat jump to bhs swingdown (korbut), so effortless. Side aerial back full, little bounce in place. I love seeing her back on this event! She looks a little rattled still, though.

R Baumann, FX: A classic rock routine for her this year! Love it. Combo pass to start is nice. Gorgeous straddle positions in the air, such great amplitude. Double pike to finish, followed by a final big air guitar swing. What a comeback for Georgia! Won’t have a chance to catch Florida, but it’s still good to see the fight in them.

7:27pm: Clapper, BB: Bhs loso loso, little balance check. And another one, bend at the hips. But takes it back, just like last week, she has to repeat her switch leap, but this time she connects it just fine. Dismounts, and that’ll erase the fall from A Baumann, but definitely some things to work on for the Gators there.

Hawthorne, FX: Double pike to open, good power and control. Oh, this is FUN! She is grooving out there on the floor and the whole crowd is in it with her. Dance elements are nice, a little late on the second split but she makes it to 180. Rudi to split jump to finish. Not sure what they’re going to give her since R Baumann just got a 10, so we’ll see…

    FINAL UF 196.975, UGA 194.475

Florida comes up just shy of the 197 mark, although I definitely think some of its floor routines were lowballed, especially compared to Georgia’s, but here we are. Props to Rachel Baumann on her perfect 10.0, and to Skaggs on her second consecutive AA win with a fantastic score – 39.525! Wish I had the full scores, but alas, Georgia’s live scoring left much to be desired.

That’s all for this week, friends! Looking forward to next week’s Link to Pink against Arkansas – see you then!

  • WBB: Gators Dominate Action to Upset No. 23 Kentucky

Photo by James Gilbert | Getty Images

The Florida Gators have now won four straight games following a 77-52 win at Kentucky on Thursday. It’s the first time the program has won four consecutive games in conference play since 2011. Overall, the Gators improved to 14-5 on the season and 4-2 in the SEC.

Florida was led by a dominant offensive showing from Kiki Smith, who led all scorers with 25, and Alberte Rimdal, who knocked down five three-pointers for the second straight game. Defensively, Smith, Nina Rickards, and Zippy Broughton were a force.

The Gators took over the game in the second quarter where they extended what had been a four point lead after one period to eighteen before the halftime break.

From there, Kentucky would make slight comeback efforts, but the Gators were able to shut it down before the lead was in danger.

The Gators led the entire game and shot 52% from the floor, including 7-15 from the three point line. Florida also outrebounded Kentucky 48-31.

The Gators also limited Rhyne Howard’s production as the former All-SEC and SEC Player of the Year settled for 17 points and ten rebounds, but those stats were mostly accumulated with the game out of reach.

Next up for Florida: a home matchup with No. 10 LSU. The Tigers are 17-2 overall and 5-1 in SEC play. The meeting will tipoff at 1:00 PM on Sunday at Exactech Arena.

  • No Castleton, No Problem: Gators Rally to Defeat Mississippi State, 80-72

Photo by James Gilbert | Getty Images

Florida big man Colin Castleton was unavailable for Wednesday’s game after suffering an injury in practice the previous day, but that didn’t stop the Gators from winning their second straight SEC contest. Anthony Duruji feasted in Castleton’s absence as the Gators defeated Mississippi State, 80-72.

Much of the first half was played with neither team gaining an advantage of more than three points until a 9-0 run by the Bulldogs saw the scoreboard show a 31-23 lead with 5:10 left to play in the opening half. Mississippi State expanded the lead to ten less than two minutes later after a layup by DJ Jefferies. Florida was able to cut the deficit to six before the horn sounded for halftime.

The second half opened with both teams knocking down shots and Florida struggling to get stop after made baskets. But the Gators kept clawing back into it and eventually were able to tie it up after a pair of made free throws by Duruji. Though, the bulldogs followed with another run that extended their lead to eight at 61-53.

After Duruji was hit with his fourth foul with 8:55 remaining, Jason Jitoboh re-entered with four fouls and proved pivotal to the outcome. With just over five minutes to play, Jitoboh dunked the ball on back to back possessions to cut the MSU lead to one. Phlandrous Fleming hit a pair of free throws with 4:58 left that put the Gators ahead and they never looked back, eventually stretching the lead to as much as 11.

Duruji finished with 22 points on 6-8 from the floor. Tyree Appleby scored 17 points while freshman Kowacie Reeves added 14 points and made three triples. Phlandrous Fleming also finished in double figures with ten points.

The Gators shot 51% from the floor and made 10-24 from beyond the three point stripe. Additionally, Florida hit 80% from the free throw line, a place they’ve struggled of late.

Florida is now 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the SEC and will face Vanderbilt on Saturday in the O’Dome. The Commodores are 10-7 overall and 2-3 I league play.

  • WBB: Gators Ride Second Half Surge to Win Over Alabama

    Final: Florida 85, Alabama 77

Photo by James Gilbert | Getty Images

With their thirteenth win of the season, the Gators women’s basketball team has exceeded all of last year’s total. Florida defeated Alabama 85-77 in Tuscaloosa on Sunday and moved to 3-2 in conference play (13-5 overall).

The first quarter saw the two teams play back and forth with neither team gaining an advantage of more than three points. At the end of the first quarter, Alabama owned a 17-16 lead.

The second half also saw much of the same pace, though with :43 remaining, the Tide took a first half high five point lead after a made and-one layup by Megan Abrams. At the intermission, Florida trailed 29-27.

Alabama opened the second half hitting four of their first five attempts from the field and extended its lead to 6 at 39-33 with 7:21 to play. While Florida kept fighting, each time they’d get it to even, the Crimson Tide would go on a run. The Tide owned a seven point lead with :32 left, but Alberte Rimdal knocked down a three-ball at the buzzer to close the gap to 58-55.

With 8:24 on the clock in the fourth, Alabama’s Brittany Davis drilled a three to make it a nine point game and it appeared the rout was on. However, these Gators had a different plan. Kiki Smith made back to back layups to make it a five point deficit before the media timeout. From there, Florida took over. With 3:29 left, Jordyn Merritt knocked down a pair at the free throw line to put the Gators on top 73-72. Florida would never look back and took the 85-77 win.

Florida shot 47% from the floor while the Tide hit at a 42% clip. The Gators also hit at a high mark from beyond the three point line, going 8-19.

Alberte Rimdal scored a team high 17 points and hit all six of her field goal attempts, including all five three pointers. Zippy Broughton added 16 points and 6 rebounds. Faith Dut also made her presence in the paint known, adding 14 points, ten of which came in the third quarter. Nina Rickards also finished in double figures with 11.

The Gators will travel to Kentucky for a clash with the Wildcats on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM. The Cats are 8-5 overall and 1-2 in the SEC. The team is 8-1 at home this year while Florida is 3-2 on the road.

  • 3-Star DB Miguel Mitchell Commits to Gators

    Photo via 247Sports | @MMitchell_10

Florida’s monster recruiting weekend isn’t over yet, though the Gators did land another commitment early Sunday afternoon. 3-star defensive back Miguel Mitchell made the announcement on social media.

Mitchell hails from Oxford, Alabama and had previously been offered by new Gators head coach Billy Napier at Louisiana.

Recently, he had received offers from LSU, Oregon, and Tennessee, among others. He visited Gainesville on Friday and is scheduled to visit Knoxville in two weeks.

Mitchell is the twelfth commitment for Florida’s 2022 class. National Signing Day is February 1.

  • WGYM Liveblog: No. 11 Alabama at No. 2 Florida for Equality Night on ABC
Sloane Blakely on beam last week, where she earned a share of the event title

Get ready for an epic, historic afternoon, Gator fans – this is the first ever regular season NCAA gymnastics meet to be broadcast on network television! It’s sure to be an exciting tonight as the two SEC champions from last season face off – the Gators holding the regular season title and the Tide with the championship meet title. It’s also Equality Night, as the Gators celebrate unity and inclusiveness across the team and the Gainesville community, and that will be reflected in both messaging during the meet as well as in the team’s attire. Super senior Megan Skaggs has chosen this week as LGBTQ Pride Awareness week for her Tiny Bow Project, supporting The Trevor Project with her sales and platform.

While it’s likely to be a close meet, the first week of competition this season would indicate that Florida should have the upper hand. Its 197.675 was the second-highest score in the nation last week and still stands as the fourth-highest of the season as of just before the meet. Freshman Sloane Blakely earned the first SEC Gymnast of the Week honor of the season, the first freshman to do so in the history of the award, and super senior Alyssa Baumann earned SEC Specialist of the Week, her third such honor of her career. In terms of individual rankings, Florida also has two all-arounders in the top ten, Blakely (No. T-5) and Skaggs (No. 8), while Alabama’s highest-ranked all-arounder is Mati Waligora at No. 17, a full 0.225 below Skaggs. Florida also has at least two individuals in the top 15 on every event, while Alabama only has one each on bars and beam. Alabama does lead the all-time series versus Florida, 75-48-2, but the Tide haven’t defeated the Gators in regular season in the O-Dome since 2001, and not in regular season at all since 2017.

Of course, that’s not to say fans should count Alabama out. The Crimson Tide did look a little rough against Oklahoma in its opening meet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t bounce back as members of the team recover from illness and get back into the gym again. The Tide did steal the SEC Championship out from under both Florida and LSU last year at the last minute, and only lost out on a spot in the NCAA Final last year by 0.025. It’s a team that’s good under pressure, and with all the network cameras and historic firsts happening, this will certainly be a pressure environment.

It all starts at 3:00pm ET on ABC Network this afternoon, but if you don’t have access to a TV, live overseas, or can’t get your family to change the channel so you can watch, we’ve got you covered with a moment-by-moment liveblog that will cover every routine!

Here’s the first video from the Gators on their message for this afternoon:

We will be getting commentary from the best in the business on the broadcast today, Bart Conner and Kathy Johnson Clarke. This meet is going to be electric, y’all.

Nya Reed and Savannah Schoenherr sporting some flags for their respective equality causes – you love to see it!

A few updates I’m being fed from inside the O-Dome: Trinity Thomas and Ellie Lazzari are both warming up on floor after being absent from the lineup last week. Lazzari also warmed up beam. Schoenherr and Leanne Wong both warmed up vault, an especially good sign for the former as she had been spotted in a boot earlier in preseason.

Gabbie Gallentine also warmed up bars, based on some photos just posted on Twitter, so it’s very possible we’ll see lots of lineup shakeups tonight.

Wong instead of Blakely in the AA this week, Skaggs maintaining her slot from last week. Thomas is also reported to be in all events except beam.

3:00pm: I’m being treated to an emergency weather update instead of the start of the meet, because I’m in Virginia instead of Florida, where it happens to be snowing and sleeting today. Send help.

Mom and Dad, of course, are Bart Conner and Kathy Johnson Clarke, our commentators for the afternoon.

3:07pm: It looks like I haven’t missed anything. That’s good.

    3:11pm: Finally getting underway!

Skaggs, VT: Yurchenko full (Yfull or FTY), nice and floaty, super straight in the air, little bounce in place. Great start for her!

Gaskins, UB: Short on the first handstand. Ray is solid, but she loses a lot of momentum, pak is also a little wonky. Short on last handstand too, but sticks her DLO dismount!

3:13pm: Edwards, VT: Love to see her returning to this lineup! Yfull, lots of distance, but a sizeable hop back. Pretty clean in the air though, that’s nice.

Waligora, UB: Good first handstand, nice blind change. Jaeger to immediate overshoot, solid. Good last handstand. Full-twisting double layout (FTDLO) dismount, bounce back. Love seeing the difficulty, but the hop kinda negates the benefit.

3:15pm: Schoenherr, VT: Y1.5, comes in short and has to stumble back to stay on her feet, oof. Not how she wanted to return to that lineup.

Adams, UB: Maloney to pak, pretty clean through there. Double tuck dismount, looked like a little hop in place?

3:17pm: Reed, VT: Y1.5, HUGE amplitude and one of her cleaner ones in there air, and just the smallest adjustment on the landing! Wow! One of her best ones yet.

Machado, UB: Good opening handstand. Maloney to pak, some leg sep on the pak salto there. Good handstands on the low bar, and the final one is good too. Double tuck, little slide back as she saluted.

3:19pm: Wong, VT: She’s doing the Podkopayeva! Yurchenko half on, pike half off, lands it a little short, chest down.

Blanco, UB: Maloney to pak salto, cleaner than her previous teammates. Handstands pretty clean throughout, stuck her full in dismount!

3:21pm: Thomas, VT: Y1.5, almost as high and far as Reed, has to swim a little bit but KEEPS IT STUCK AND THEY THROW HER TEN!!!! Trinity Thomas now has a 10.0 on every single event – that’s another Gator Gym Slam!

Doggette, UB: Ray to pak, that’s nice. DLO stuck, good for her to do that while the arena is going crazy.

AFTER ONE: UF 49.35, BAMA 49.175

3:30pm: Adams, VT: Yfull, a little underrotated, has to step forward.

Blakely, UB: Good first handstand. Little leg sep in the Maloney and pak. Good final handstands on the high bar. Double front stuck! This crowd is going CRAZY for her!

3:32pm: Hudson, VT: Yfull, a little bouncy, big step back.

Skaggs, UB: Tkachev to pak, just floats down to the low bar. Looked maybe a hair shy on the final handstand? DLO dismount, tried to hold it on her toes but stepped out of it, covering with her salute.

3:34pm: Olsen, VT: Yurchenko double full (DTY), one of her better ones! Some mushy knees in the air, but good height and distance and her chest is up when she lands. Little slide back.

McCusker, UB: Maloney to pak, legs glued together. Little shy on the first low bar handstand. van Leeuwen is solid. High bar handstands looked good. Double front half out, much better this week! Just a little step back.

3:36pm: Quinn, VT: Y1.5, great distance, big hop forward.

Schoenherr, UB: Let’s see if she can bounce back after vault. Good first handstands. Jaeger, HUGE amplitude. Bail is solid, lands it at 90 degrees. Double front half out, holds that landing in place!

3:38pm: Doggett, VT: Y1.5, wow! Ooh, almost stuck it, but just took a small step back. Still, lovely in the air. Not as big as Reed or Thomas amplitude-wise though.

Thomas, UB: Maloney to pak, solid. van Leeuwen, good. Almost goes over the wrong way on a handstand! Oh boy. She pulls it back though, and dismounted without issue. Whew. Crisis averted.

3:40pm: Graber, VT: Y1.5, big amplitude on that! A little off to the side, a little cross step on the landing.

Wong, UB: Maloney to pak, ooh, big leg separation there. van Leeuwen gets it back. Went big on the last handstand and almost arched it over as well, although not as much as Thomas. Little hop on the dismount.

I’m being told that Blakely’s score being lower than expected may be because she didn’t salute after she finished her routine… but these are some interesting scores…

AFTER TWO: BAMA 98.475, UF 98.325

3:47pm: Spent the rotation break trying to find out what happened with bars scores and I still don’t have a concrete answer, so here we go.

Skaggs, BB: Switch to split, gorgeous. Back handspring to layout stepout (bhs loso), solid. Front aerial, nice and steady. Cat leap to switch side, good shapes there. Side aerial back full, stuck! A great start for the Gators.

Olsen, FX: Piked full in to start, interesting – she used to do a double double. Dance series is nice, good split positions. Moonwalk in the middle of the floor.. and it’s not even good really? Why is that in there? Front tuck through to double tuck, tried to stick it but came in a little short, stepped forward into her finishing choreo. They’ll take that, though, after last week’s floor issues at Oklahoma.

3:51pm: Blakely, BB: She looks so confident in her series, love that. Switch to switch half, so nice. Full turn, steady. Side somi, keeps it in control. Side aerial to back full, looked stuck from here!

Mitchell, FX: Double pike to open, strong and controlled. She’s a performer, loving her choreography and the way she hits the beat. Wolf dance elements were a little off axis but she got them around. Front through to double tuck to finish, a little chest down but popped it up quickly.

3:55pm: Lazzari, BB: Yay! Good to see her back in lineup. Oh noooo, and a fall right off the bat, completely misses the beam on her second layout in her series. Gets back up immediately, almost too soon, and has another little wobble, but the crowd chimes in with a roar for her and she gets it back. Switch to split, good. Finishes the rest of the routine well, and sticks her dismount. Wow. Not the way she wanted to debut this season.

Waligora, FX: Front lay to front double full to start, nice! Another E pass for Bama there. Big bounce out of her second combination pass, but stays in bounds just barely. I normally don’t mind two-pass routines, since it helps keep the athletes healthy, but that did not feel like enough content in a floor routine.

3:59pm: Baumann, BB: The ice queen up next, exactly the right person for the job now. Bhs loso, so solid. Switch to split, lovely positions. Side aerial, balance break and brings her foot off the beam. Eek. Switch half, and another bobble! Nerves are getting to her a little, this is unusual. Roundoff 1.5 stuck! She stayed on, that’s what matters.

Hudson, FX: Front lay to front double full, almost a carbon copy of Waligora before her. Gorgeous dance elements, really like her toe point and the finish on those. 2.5 twist, don’t see a lot of those these days, that was solid. Double tuck to finish her routine, very nice! Another solid outing for the Tide… Florida may need them to crack to get this back.

4:02pm: Wong, BB: Switch to split leap, gorgeous. Bhs loso, nice and steady. Full turn, smooth and clean. Front aerial, snaps those arms down, does not allow a second to worry about a wobble. Side aerial, and a side somi? I don’t think she actually needs all those elements for bonus but good for her! Roundoff double full, don’t know if I buy that stick but Kathy did! She stepped really quickly into her salute.

Blanco, FX: Double pike to open, pointed toes in the air, very nice. Leap series, don’t think I buy that ring position but all her splits were gorgeous. Double tuck, good control in there. Combination pass to finish, steps out of it into an arabesque to cover the fact that she had too much momentum.

4:06pm: Clapper, BB: Looking for one more hit from the Gators here. Bhs loso loso, took it riiiight to the end of the beam but didn’t even flinch, so solid. Switch leap, ooh it’s clear she felt off, pauses and does some choreography to go back to her previous position. Switch to split, that’s better. Sticks her dismount! Good for her, what a veteran.

Graber, FX: I missed her opening pass but from the cheers it sounds like a good one! Aggressive on the dance series, hits all her positions. Front through to double pike, solid control to finish.

AFTER THREE: BAMA 147.775, UF 147.425

Florida is going to need Alabama to make some beam mistakes too in order to pull this one out.

4:17pm: About to start the final rotation!

Burgess, BB: Full turn to start, good. One-arm bhs loso, steady. Nice 180 on the switch side. Switch leap to beat jump, solid. Side aerial back full stuck. Bama showing no sign of weakness so far.

Skaggs, FX: Double wolf turn to open, keeps it in control. Rudi to double stag, very nice. 1.5 to front lay to finish, her form is just so clean. Her choreography is so precise and she just attacks it, I’m so in love with this routine.

4:21pm: Doggette, BB: Bhs loso, steady. Beat jump to switch half, nice toe point in there. Split jump to korbut (bhs swingdown), makes it look really dynamic, that was cool. Little step on her dismount.

Blakely, FX: Double arabian, and she steps out of bounds. That’s probably it for the Gators unless someone from Bama falls. Dance series is fantastic. Double tuck, great control, and she takes a second to breathe. 1.5 to front lay, takes it right to the line, finishes with her ending pose. Strong, just little errors adding up.

4:25pm: Olsen, BB: Bhs loso, little lean to the side but keeps it pretty small. Full turn, fine. Front aerial, strong. Bhs double full, sticks it. Another hit for the Tide.

Baumann, FX: Let’s see how she bounces back after that nervy beam. 1.5 to front full to open, interesting… normally she opens with her more difficult pass to keep her stamina better. Love the dramatic choreo through here. Double pike, ooh, comes in short and stings her ankles. Doesn’t touch the floor, but still will be a heavy deduction.

4:29pm: Hudson, BB: Front aerial to bhs loso, that’s a strong series. Switch to beat jump, she did that really quickly, wow. Side aerial, fine. 1.5 twist, hop forward.

Wong, FX: Triple twist to open! What a beauty! Dance series is nice, lovely toe point and splits. Combination pass is clean, dances out immediately. Double pike to finish, solid control to finish – they NEEDED that. So clutch from the freshman!

4:32pm: Waligora, BB: Big leg up bobble on her series, oop. Side aerial, locks it down. Split jump to tuck jump full, takes a second to secure herself. Roundoff 1.5, hop forward.

Reed, FX: Ok, time to bring the house down, y’all. Opens with her DLO, keeps it to a controlled lunge. Front lay to Rudi, much better control this week, maybe a little foot slide? Nice positions in the dance series, very precise coming out of it. Double pike to finish, absolutely nails it! Finishes with the Gator chomp – will this be her night for the ten??? I personally wouldn’t based on some of the slow mo replays here, but did the judges see those in real time?

4:37pm: Blanco, BB: Has to keep her cool because NYA JUST GOT A PERFECT TEN!!!! Series is super clean, rock solid too. Switch to beat jump, very nice. Roundoff double full and she sticks it! That should be a great score for Bama too.

Thomas, FX: Here we gooooo! Opens with DLO, SKY high and great control on the landing. Front full front lay, lovely. Double pike, a little overcooked but keeps it in bounds and didn’t bring her front foot off the floor. ABC is saying Florida needs a 9.95 to win, and based on my calculations on the live scoring page, that is correct…

SHE GOT ANOTHER TEN! HOLY COW!

    FINAL: UF 197.0, BAMA 196.925

Your event winners from tonight: Thomas on vault with her perfect 10.0, Blanco and Doggette on bars with 9.925s, Blanco on beam with a 9.95, and Thomas and Reed on floor with their perfect 10.0s. And Skaggs wins the all-around with a 39.525!

  • MBB: Reeves, Fleming lead Gators Past Gamecocks

Another night, another new starting lineup for the Florida Gators (their sixth of the year), except this time, it seemed to work. Instead of the usual shooting woes to open the game, lineup newcomers Kowacie Reeves and Phlandrous Fleming promptly made the first two attempts of the game.

The Gators would go on to defeat South Carolina 71-63 in Columbia. Florida’s lead built to as many as 13 in the first half when Myreon Jones (off the bench) made the second of two free throws with 1:23 remaining. The two teams entered intermission with Florida leading 36-28.

The second half saw a back and forth affair with neither team gaining much traction. The Gamecocks eventually started to claw back into the game with a 6-0 run midway through the second half. While USC made it a four point game with 9:26 to play, the Gators followed with a 10-1 run that put them back up by thirteen. With 1:14 remaining, the Gamecocks got to within six, but Tyree Appleby hit a pair at the line to clinch the win.

For the game, Florida shot 55% from the field while holding Carolina to just 35%. The Gators also made 10-15 from the free throw line, a significant improvement from their 11-22 showing the last time out.

Reeves and Fleming led Florida with 14 points each while Colin Castelton added 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Florida will host Mississippi State on Wednesday at Exactech Arena with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 PM. The Bulldogs are 12-4 on the season and 3-1 in league action.

  • Gators Land Commitment From UGA Transfer CB Jalen Kimber

Billy Napier isn’t done in the transfer portal, yet. On Saturday, the Gators’ new head coach added to the secondary with the commitment of transfer CB Jalen Kimber. Kimber spent the last two years with the Georgia Bulldogs and announced his intention to transfer the day after UGA won their first national championship in 41 years.

Kimber was the No. 9 ranked cornerback in the 2020 recruiting class and committed to the Bulldogs all the way back in April of 2019. He attended Mansfield Timberview High School.

In his time at Georgia, he has only played in three games and made a total of three tackles. Kimber has three years of eligibility remaining.

Kimber is the fourth transfer that Napier has added since taking over the Florida program.
