FINAL: AUBURN 3, FLORIDA 1
GAINESVILLE, FL- The Florida Gators suffered a crushing loss to SEC rival Auburn in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament. Florida was the number one seed in the region, while Auburn was number four.
Florida trailed 1-0 entering half as Auburn’s Brooke Ramsier scored in the 26th minute. Florida’s defense failed to clear the ball, and Ramsier made the Gators pay for it.
In the 62nd minute, Florida sophomore defender Rachelle Smith received a red card after tripping up Auburn’s Kristen Dodson in the box. Auburn was awarded a penalty kick, and Bri Folds extended the Tigers lead to two. Smith was ejected from the game, and Florida was forced to play with just ten players on the field for the remainder of the game.
That lead wouldn’t last long however, Florida senior Brooke Sharp would score just fifty-three seconds later. Sharp was able to get the ball just inside the goal post to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Auburn added the insurance goal in the 85th minute when Dodson took a shot from more than thirty feet out, and lifted it above Florida goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese, who was playing well off her line.
