• MBB: Mike White and Florida adjust early to make comeback against Kentucky
Photo by Michael Hickey / Getty Images

Mike White didn’t look angry or frustrated as he called a timeout nine minutes into Florida’s Feb. 27 contest against Kentucky. After the Wildcats forced a shot clock violation with the Gators down 25-16, White looked exasperated.

However, instead of letting the game slip away or throwing his hands up in despair, White switched his men to a zone defensive scheme and the momentum flipped in an instant. The Gators fought all the way back to a 71-67 win to move to 9-5 in conference, now third in the SEC, and 13-6 overall.

The Gators came out of the gates slowly against Kentucky. After making an early three, Kentucky shot out to a ten-point lead after a little more than nine minutes of play. After a Jan. 9 matchup resulted in a 76-58 Wildcat win, the orange and blue faithful could feel a pervasive sense of deja vu settling in as they watched head coach John Calipari’s defense absolutely suffocate Florida when White called the aforementioned timeout.

Then junior sharpshooter Noah Locke got loose and made a three. Then Scottie Lewis did the same thing. Finally, on a breakaway caused by a Kentucky turnover, Tre Mann threw up a lob and Lewis dunked it home. In less than 90 seconds, Florida went from down double-digits to trailing by only two.

    Florida had a ball game.

The rest of the first half was a jockeying match, with Florida taking a late lead before a pair of Kentucky baskets gave the Wildcats a 39-38 lead as both teams went to the locker room. The Gators dominated points in the paint, 20-12, and had eight more field goal attempts, but Kentucky had kept themselves alive by shooting 16-17 from the free throw line.

Mann and Florida big man Colin Castleton came alive in the second half, scoring 17 of UF’s first 21 points after the break between them. Mann had his second 20-point game, scoring 14 on just four shots in the second half emphasized by some clutch late free throws. His 21 points and a team-high 8 rebounds capped off a great week that also saw him record his first collegiate double-double against Auburn on Tuesday. Castleton finished with 14 points and five boards.

Tyree Appleby made some clutch plays late as well, throwing a loose ball off of Kentucky’s Brandon Boston Jr. to give the ball back to the Gators in the final minutes, with the ensuing Tre Mann jump shot giving Florida a four-point lead with just under two minutes to play. Appleby also made a pair of free throws in the final thirty seconds to maintain that same margin, finishing with 11 points and five rebounds and assists each.

Most of Kentucky’s fight came from graduate student Davion Mintz, who scored 21 points despite only shooting 2-9 from three. The Wildcats as a team only went 4-20 from beyond the arc as they were clearly buoyed offensively by 29 free throw attempts

  • SB: Hightower Hurls Second Straight Complete Game to Lift Gators Over Louisville
Photo by Brian Fox / ChompTalk.com

Florida right-hander Elizabeth Hightower threw her second consecutive complete game Saturday afternoon en route to a 5-1 win over Louisville.

“One thing that is overlooked is deception and I think that’s something Hightower has going for her,” UF head coach Tim Walton said. “Other than the two mistakes [Hightower] made in the game, . . . there wasn’t a whole lot of hard [Louisville] contact.”

Hightower held the Cardinals hitless until the fourth inning when Louisville catcher Rebecca Chung nearly went yard. The cleanup hitter tripled off the top of the left-field wall before Louisville left fielder Carmyn Greenwood knocked an RBI-single to score the first run of the afternoon.

But the Cardinals’ advantage didn’t last long. Louisville pitcher Taylor Roby managed three scoreless inning until a walk and a pair of singles juiced the bases for the Gators with one out for pinch-hitter Bryn Thomas. Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk to score Cottrill and tie the game at one. The next batter, center fielder Cheyenne Lindsey, ripped a two-run double down the right-field line to give the Gators a 3-1 advantage.

“Being at the bottom of the lineup, it’s really important to get on base and turn it over,” Lindsey said.

After Louisville made its first pitching change, Florida tacked on two more runs to take a 5-1 lead heading into the final three frames. Second baseman Hannah Adams sent a fly ball deep enough to left field to let shortstop Kali Reis beat the throw home. “[Adams] is one of the best, if not the best second baseman in the country,” Walton said. With two outs and runners on the corners, Chung overthrew second base, allowing Lindsey to steal home safely.

Hitless fifth and sixth innings led to one last one-two-three inning for Hightower in the top of the seventh to secure Florida’s tenth straight victory to open the season.

  • BSB: Gators defeat Samford; Improve to 4-2 on season

    Final: Florida 8, Samford 4

    Sterlin Thompson

The Florida Gators improved to 4-2 on the season with an 8-4 win over Samford on Friday. Florida was led by RHP Tommy Mace, who tossed a gem, and CF Jud Fabian, who nearly went yard twice.

    How It Happened:

Florida opened the scoring in the second inning with a two out rally that saw freshman 2B Jordan Carrion single just in front of Samford RF Ryan Crockett. Both Sterlin Thompson and Kris Armstrong scored on the play. Despite runners on second and third and the top of the lineup at-bat, Florida was unable to add to the lead.

Fabian crushed a first pitch bomb to lead off the third inning and extend the Florida lead to 3-0. That ball climbed roughly halfway up the berm beyond the left field wall.

The Gators added a three spot in the fourth highlighted by Kris Armstrong’s triple that scored Thompson. Jacob Young added an RBI double down the line that put Florida ahead 6-0. The base hit also represented the twenty fourth straight game (dating back to 2019) that Young has recorded a hit.

Florida tacked on two runs in the fifth as Thompson tripled down the line in left to score Jordan Young. Thompson scored on an errant throw by Bulldogs second baseman Brooks Carlson for the Little League homer.

Florida’s bullpen was unable to close the doors and allowed four runs over the final threr frames, something Kevin O’Sullivan was irritated by after the game.

Mace struck out a career high 11 in six innings before giving way to Brandon Sproat and Hunter Mink.

    Pitching Decision:

    • W: Tommy Mace (2-0)
    • L: Samuel Strickland (1-1)

    Individual Stats:

    • Thompson: 2-2, 3B, 3 R, BB, RBI
    • Fabian: 2-4, HR, RBI, R
    • Mace: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 11 K, 0 BB

    What’s Next:

Florida will complete the three games series with Samford on Saturday and Sunday. Jack Leftwich gets the ball for the Gators for Saturday’s 4:00 PM first pitch.

  • VB: Gators Sweep Tennessee (Again)
Photo by Benjamin Fox / ChompTalk.com

The No. 8 Florida Gators women’s volleyball team took another clean sweep over the Tennessee Lady Volunteers Friday afternoon in Knoxville. This was the second of two games, cinching the series victory for Florida.

Tennessee came into the match looking to put up a significant fight to seek revenge against Florida after the results of yesterday’s sweep. The first two sets of the match saw significant moves by both teams, but a highly skilled Florida team just kept the edge on Tennessee.

The final set of the game allowed the Gators to demonstrate in full their abilities. With numerous kills, Florida was just too much for Tennessee,

    Set 1: 25-23 UF

Similar to the match yesterday, Tennessee came out with an early lead over Florida 6-3. However, Florida came back to notch away at Tennessee’s lead, tying up the two teams 13-13. The middle part of the set saw some toe-to-toe action as neither team held a significant advantage over the other until the Gators pulled a slight lead 21-19. However, Tennessee began to catch back up until Monserez put in a final kill to secure the first win of the day for Florida.

    Set 2: 29-27 UF

Florida came out with the early lead for the second set with a score of 6-1. Tennessee put in the work to slowly tick away Florida’s lead which eventually tied the two teams up 13-13. After this point in the match, the teams saw significant back-and-forth action. Neither team could get a large lead over the other. However, a few attack errors by Tennessee late in the match gave Florida their second win of the match.

    Set 3: 25-16 UF

After a tough second set, Florida returned to action strong, putting up a 6-2 lead over Tennessee. In fact, the Gators held the slight advantage the entire set over Tennessee. Florida put up a monumental number of kills in the set that gave Tennessee no chance. The Gators began to seal their win when they achieved a 9-point lead, putting the score at 22-13. Florida cinched the win of the final set and of the match with a final block by Hall and Thayer.

  • WGYM Liveblog: Senior Night! No. 18 Auburn at No. 1 Florida

After a stunning performance last week despite missing several key athletes, the Gators should be back to full strength this week as they take on Auburn for the second time this season.

The Gators have proven to be a formidable force this season, with five athletes capable of a 39.3+ all-around score and five athletes on every event except floor with a season high of 9.9 or better. If every person turned in their best performance of the season tonight, the Gators would earn a MASSIVE 198.850 – a score that’s essentially unheard of. This team’s potential is practically limitless – a strong sign as we approach postseason.

Auburn has had its ups and downs this season – last week the Tigers hit a 197.050 to upset Georgia, but just a week before, they only went 196.1 and fell to Missouri. Consistency will be key if they have any chance of challenging Florida, and it hasn’t been their strong suit so far this year. Still, there are some strong individuals on this Auburn team. Cassie Stevens and Derrian Gobourne both rank in the Top 50 in the all-around nationwide, and Gobourne is ranked in the Top 20 on VT, UB, and FX and Stevens in the Top 50 on FX.

Tonight will serve several honorific purposes as well, as it is both alumni night and senior night. I don’t expect to see a parade of alumni like we usually do due to COVID travel and capacity restrictions, but I’m sure a meaningful tribute has been put together in some fashion, and I hope we get to see it on the broadcast or later on social media.

As for the seniors, I’m hoping that after last week’s exercise in forced depth exploration proved successful for the Gators, we’ll see all three seniors is as many events as possible tonight to allow them their moment in the spotlight one last time in the O-Dome. (I’ve even put my money where my mouth is and kept Baumann in my fantasy bars lineup, ha!) Senior night is always emotional, but I wonder if, to lessen the blow, we might get an announcement that one or more of them might be opting to take the extra year of eligibility that the NCAA has offered athletes due to COVID. My money would be on Baumann, if anyone, but we’ll see.

Senior night against Auburn begins at 8:15pm ET tonight (likely closer to 8:30 on broadcast), but if you can’t be there or tune in, we’ve got you covered! Stay here with us throughout tonight’s meet for every routine, play by play.

8:21pm: Waiting for LSU/Kentucky to finish up. It’s actually really close – Kentucky is doing well, but both teams have had some misses from my understanding. Gonna warn everyone now, today has been kind of an emotional rollercoaster for me personally, and emotions were already high from everything in the gymnastics world that happened yesterday, so I apologize if I’m not on my game tonight.

8:35pm: Finally switching to our meet! Get hype, y’all!

Foberg, VT: So glad she’s getting to compete tonight! FTY, good pop off the table, little hop forward on the landing but pretty clean in the air.

Sumner, UB: Short first handstand. Tkachev is good, maybe a little low amplitude. Archy handstand there, pak is lovely though. Final handstand is good. DLO is whippy and very close to the bar, but she sticks!

Skaggs, VT: FTY, gooooorgeous! Little flexed feet and some leg sep in slow mo, but she STICKS IT! That’ll be a great score.

Smith, UB: Transitions are clean. Low bar handstand is loose. DLO stuck! Auburn staying in it.

8:39pm: Schoenherr, VT: Y1.5, great distance and some knees in the air, little shuffle on the landing. But what a great one for her!

Sabados, UB: Short first handstand, Ray is nice! Bail is a little piked. DLO, bounce back.

8:41pm: Reed, VT: Love seeing her back! Glad they all stayed healthy. Y1.5, flung it out a little far and ended up underrotating, has to scoot her feet back under her to stay upright.

Stevens, UB: Went too hard for the first handstand and went over the wrong way! Oh no! And loses her rhythm again, oof. Tkachev is big but she’s clearly rattled. DLO is really close to the bar, yikes! Lands it okay though.

8:44pm: Thomas, VT: Y1.5, waaay too much power and bounds out of it, takes a second step too. Almost looked like a warmup vault, that was odd. Not her best.

Brusch, UB: Maloney to bail, good. Good, not great, last handstand. DLO stuck! A good reset.

8:46pm: Richards, VT: Okay, let’s see it. Y1.5, one of the best I’ve seen her do! Just the smallest adjustment on the landing. Good for her!

Gobourne, UB: Tkachev to pak is lovely. Last handstand maybe a little shy? Full in a little far, had to hop on the landing.

AFTER ONE: UF 49.45, AUB 49.325

Schoenherr leads for the vault title with a 9.95, while Brusch and Gobourne own the top spot on bars for a 9.9.

Mixing it up on the bar lineup order tonight:

8:53pm: Watson sat her Y1.5 in warmups… not a great sign for the Tigers.

Hollingsworth, VT: FTY, great distance, little pike, hop back.

Lazzari, UB: What a gorgeous release! Pak salto is lovely, all the handstands so far have been good. Ooh I jinxed her, last handstand a little short. A little slow in rotation on the full in dismount, has to take a big step back.

8:56pm: Smith, VT: FTY, ooh, very low on the landing, crunched over and underrotated. Not their best showing.

Gallentine, UB: Hoping for a good night for her. Good first handstands. Maloney to pak is gorgeous, legs just pasted together. Good last handstand! DLO, knees buckle a little and she has to step back.

8:58pm: Sabados, VT: FTY is super clean in the air, not great amplitude, but she STICKS cold, wow!

Skaggs, UB: Great first handstand. Tkachev just FLIES, pak is solid. Last handstand is text.book. Yes. DLO, liiiittle slide back. That’ll be a good one.

9:00pm: Watson, VT: Y1.5, landed straight legged ooh! That was scary but she’s okay, just a little hop forward. That probably stung though.

Baumann, UB: So stoked for her to stay in this lineup! Jaeger is lovely. Bail maybe a little floppy? Great last handstand! DLO, little step forward, but another great showing for her! So proud.

9:02pm: Gobourne, VT: Y1.5, step forward, good in the air though and crazy distance.

Schoenherr, UB: Great first handstands! Jaeger just flooooats. Bail is great. Last handstand lovely too. Double front half out, almost got the stick but she got a little ahead of herself there, celebrated too soon and lost control of it.

9:04pm: Payton Smith, VT: FTY, this is a last minute sub from my understanding, Stevens is out. Not great amplitude, but at least they fielded six vaults?

Thomas, UB: Finally anchoring! Great opening handstand. Maloney to uprise, gorgeous. Pak is super clean. Good low bar handstands. Van Leeuwen, legs so clean. Great last handstand too! DLO, little bounce – I don’t think that’s it, but we’ll see. Team knows it too, they’re not ten chanting, haha.

AFTER TWO: UF 98.95, AUB 98.475

9:12pm: Richards, BB: Bhs loso loso, super steady. I watched the rest of the routine but honestly couldn’t tell you what happened, I zoned out for a second. Slow mo shows switch to straddle was good. Dismount had a small adjustment.

9:14: Oldham, FX: Double pike to open, was that a two foot stick??? Back 1.5 to front lay, she buckles a little bit there, almost like she didn’t have the whip to get it around, but stayed on her feet somehow. Double tuck, much better, closes it out nicely. Good recovery!

9:16pm: Skaggs, BB: Wolf turn is good. Switch to split, lovely. Bhs loso, so solid. Her presence on beam is just so calm but so confident. Front aerial is good. Cat leap, to switch side is so high! Side aerial back full, toes hang onto the stick!

9:18pm: Sabados, FX: Front double full, little knees and crossed legs in the twist but decent control coming out. Three dance elements connected, getting that bonus. Shushunova, fun. 1.5 to front lay, lovely twisting there. And lovely ending choreo! Love that.

9:19pm: Lazzari, BB: Triple series is gorgeous. Switch to split, just lovely. Absolutely lovely. Full turn, steady. She’s got such poise, especially for a freshman. Side aerial back full, just drops it in. What incredible form.

9:21pm: Hollingsworth, FX: Love seeing her move up in this lineup! Full out, in the open position, gorgeous but she steps out! That’ll be a tenth. Lovely leap series. Another Shushunova, I wonder how much bonus that’s worth. Must be why we’re seeing more of them with these two-pass routines. Front through to double tuck, a little low chest there but better control than the first pass.

9:23pm: Baumann, BB: Come on, Alyssa! Bhs loso, gorgeous. Switch to split, gorgeous. Front aerial is soooo smooth. Full turn, good. Switch half is much better than last week, gets that front leg up. Roundoff 1.5, STUCK. I’m so proud. Will they give it to her?

9:25pm: Stevens, FX: Front lay to Rudi, very nice. Switch ring to switch half, maybe some front foot there but I’m just being picky. Bringing the drama to this choreography. Double tuck to finish. These two pass routines are just… underwhelming, for the most part? Especially because the choreo in the middle isn’t super engaging.

9:26pm: Thomas, BB: Bhs loso, so solid! Front aerial to beat to korbut, so quick and elegant. Side aerial back full is stuck! That’s another one where it could be, it could not be. We’ll see!

9:28pm: Watson, FX: Just the double pike, slides the front foot a bit as she lunges. Lovely dance elements there. 1.5 to front lay, gorgeous twisting form. Double tuck, overdoes it and both feet come OOB as she stumbles back. Three tenths for the OOB alone, so won’t be a good one unfortunately.

9:30pm: Clapper, BB: Bhs loso loso, a little lean but stays patient. Full turn is lovely. Splits are gorgeous there. Side aerial back full stuck!

9:31: Gobourne, FX: Just the double tuck to open, takes it right to the line but stops her momentum before she takes another step back. Front full to front lay, little stutter step there out of it. Having so much fun with this ’90s medley choreo, I’m obsessed. Double pike to finish, great control on the landing. Easily my favorite Tiger routine.

AFTER THREE: UF 148.65, AUB 147.65

Lazzari and Clapper tie with 9.975 for the lead on beam right now, and Gobourne posts a 9.95 that will be hard to beat for the floor title.

Broadcast is honoring Pam Titus, who is in the audience tonight! Florida’s first black gymnast and its first perfect 10.0 – definitely worth celebrating, glad we got to see it mentioned on broadcast. She also scored the first 10.0 on floor in NCAA history? Wow! What an icon!

9:41pm: Oldham, BB: Bhs loso, some knees there but that’s not a deduction NCAA judges take. Full turn, little arm swing there. Cat leap to side aerial, lovely. Hitchkick to switch side, nice! She’s handling this like a pro, she ought to be in this lineup more often! Roundoff 1.5, little slide back on the dismount.

9:43pm: Clapper, FX: Hmm, Richards is out. Odd. Double tuck to open, a little short but covers well. 1.5 to front lay to stag, good control there. Double pike to close, very solid. A great start!

9:45pm: Gobourne, BB: Little check on the series but saves it and keeps it relatively small. Full turn, patient with it, stays steady. Cat leap side aerial, again, little bit off but is patient and doesn’t bobble. Switch side, maybe a little shy? Roundoff double full, little slide on the landing.

9:47pm: Skaggs, FX: She’s having such a good night so far! Double wolf is good. Rudi to split, a little wild in the air on that jump. See, this two pass routine I enjoy because the choreo is interesting and fun. Lovely on the dance series. 1.5 to front lay is gorgeous, and her ending pose is just -chef’s kiss-.

9:49pm: Hollingsworth, BB: Bhs back pike, very nice. Wouldn’t call it a layout though. Switch to switch half, nice. Split half from side stand, kept that in from elite, that’s fun and she actually does it well! Side aerial back full, little scoot. Love seeing something a little different from her!

9:51pm: Lazzari, FX: Double pike to open, much better control this week. 1.5 to front lay to sissone, gorgeous. Splits in her dance series are great. Double tuck to finish, good control there too! What a great showing for her tonight, love seeing her in the all-around.

9:53pm: Sylvia, BB: Full turn, lovely. Front aerial, slight hesitation, bhs bhs… I wouldn’t call that a series personally. Switch to sheep, not the prettiest but not the worst. Korbut is lovely. Cartwheel gainer full stuck! We’ll see if the judges give her series credit or not.

9:55pm: Reed, FX: DLO, good control, maybe a little slide of the front foot? Front lay to Rudi, some knees in there but keeps control of it well. Leaps are some of the best I’ve seen her do! Hitting all these musical marks, yes. Double pike to close, a little short, just opened a little too soon and had to step forward.

9:56pm: McLaughlin, BB: Bhs loso, solid. Switch to straddle quarter, little lean forward but keeps it small. Side aerial to split jump, little hesitation in that connection but should be fine. Gainer pike off the end, maybe stuck? Hard to tell from here.

9:58pm: Thomas, FX: DLO to open, front foot does NOT move, just lays it back. Front full front lay to sissone, dances right out. Great positions and landing control on her dance series. Just showing off that flexibility, YES. Double pike, again just pops it out into the lunge – I think THIS could be it, y’all.

10:00pm: Stevens, BB: Bhs loso, little bobble when the crowd erupts, ooooof stay focused, girl. Cat leap to switch… ring? It didn’t reach ring position at all though. Front toss to knee, little bobble there. Roundoff 1.5 stuck! Good for her!

10:01pm: Baumann, FX: Closing out her senior night with the anchor spot. Let’s go. The arena goes dead quiet for her opening choreo segment, ooh. Double tuck, lands it perfectly, just lays that lunge back. 1.5 to front lay, single step out. Switch half to Popa, hits those nicely and doesn’t bounce on the landing. Just the double pike now. front foot moves a little bit but what a NIGHT and what a finish for her. Aaaaand we’re crying again, oh boy. Same though.

    FINAL: UF 198.275, AUB 197.025

THAT, Gator fans, is the HIGHEST score in the nation to date this season!

Trinity Thomas takes the AA with a massive 39.75, as well as the bars and floor titles with those perfect 10.0s. Schoenherr earns the vault title with her 9.95, and Lazzari and Clapper tie with 9.975 for the beam title.

Photo by Benjamin Fox / ChompTalk.com

The No. 8 Florida Gators women’s volleyball team swept the Tennessee Lady Volunteers in Knoxville with a final score of 3-0 on Thursday. This win advances the Gators to an overall record of 11-2.

The three sets of this match mirrored each other. Similar mistakes made by Tennessee cost them their advantage, and a ruthless Florida offensive and defensive effort put Florida back on top and gave them the match win.

    Set 1: 25-20 UF

It was somewhat of a slow start for Florida, trailing Tennessee 9-4. Florida called a timeout and came back to tick away Tennessee’s lead, going on a 11-6 run to take the advantage, 18-16 . The Gators completed an impressive three straight blocks before Tennessee began to notch at the Gators lead. However, the Gators went on a 4-1 run that ultimately gave them the win in the first set.

    Set 2: 25-18 UF

Similar to the first set, Tennessee came out strong with a lead over Florida 4-0, and Florida answered with an impressive 9-3 run to give them a two-point advantage at 9-7. The set saw back-and-forth action until Florida ultimately took a three-point lead with a score of 18-15 over Tennessee. Florida finished the set strong, completing a 7-3 run that cinched the second win of the day for Florida.

    Set 3: 25-21 UF

Similar to the two previous sets, Tennessee started the set strong with a lead over Florida 9-3. In a similar fashion Florida went on a massive run to cinch the lead. This time Florida went on a 9-2 run to pull ahead. The teams then went toe-to-toe in action. However, a 5-2 run close to the end of the set and an impressive number of blocks gave Florida the final win.

Photo by Brian Fox / ChompTalk.com

With two outs and runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, UNF needed just one more out to escape the jam and head to the sixth inning down four runs.

But Florida pinch-hitter Sarah Longley reached base safely on UNF first baseman Paige Pfent’s error as she was unable to corral the throw from across the diamond. On the next at-bat, Florida left fielder Jamie Hoover scored on center fielder Cheyenne Lindsey’s infield single before second baseman Hannah Adams drove in Longley to give the Gators a commanding 7-0 lead.

First baseman Kendyl Lindaman drew a walk to load the bases for third baseman Charla Echols who delivered a walk-off single to cap off Florida’s epic two-out rally and clinch the run-rule victory. “I think we have a chance to be a really good offensive team,” Echols said. “Once we all come around, it’s going to be exciting to see us the rest of the year.”

Following a perfect 8-0 start, No. 6 Florida stayed in the win column Thursday night at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium, defeating UNF 8-0 in just five innings.

    Game Synopsis

Adams and Echols led things off with a pair of first-inning singles until sophomore catcher Julia Cottrill hit a line-drive, RBI-single for the first run of the game. On the ensuing at-bat, a fielding error on UNF shortstop Rebecca Koskey allowed Echols to score, extending Florida’s lead to 2-0.

Following a one-two-three top of the second inning, Lindaman roped a double into the right-center-field gap to score Adams. After laying a goose egg in the third inning, the Gators added another run in the fourth thanks to another Lindaman two-out, RBI-double. “I felt really good building up my confidence in this game tonight and I’m just ready to take it into the weekend,” Lindaman said after the game.

Florida right-hander Natalie Lugo hurled four scoreless innings until sophomore southpaw Rylee Trlicek took the circle for the final frame. Trick retired the side in order before the Gators tacked on four additional runs in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of an epic two-out rally en route to the run-rule victory.

Florida head coach Tim Walton praised the work of his pitching staff thus far. “I think we’ve done a good job limiting free passes — hit by pitches and walks — we’re not coupling any of those things with the snowball effect of allowing too many hits,” Walton said.

  • BSB: Tyler Nesbitt to Miss 2021

Photo by Brian Fox / ChompTalk.com

Florida baseball has yet another arm that will not be a factor in 2021. Freshman RHP Tyler Nesbitt is set to undergo Tommy John surgery next week, head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said after Wednesday’s 8-3 win over North Florida.

“He’s going to have Tommy John on Wednesday (3/3).”

Nesbitt made an immediate impact as a true freshman a year ago. In five appearances, the Labelle, FL native pitched 11.2 innings without allowing a run. He also struck out 17 batters while only walking three.

Nesbitt was expected to be a go-to guy in the bullpen and see get some starts in midweek action.

O’Sullivan announced last week that RHP Nick Pogue will also miss the season after successful Tommy John surgery.

Tommy John surgery is used to repair the ligament in the elbow and usually takes nearly a year (or more) to recover.

  • BSB: Gators Sweep Home and Home with North Florida

Florida baseball got back on track with a home and home sweep of North Florida in midweek action on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Tuesday:

Florida pulled out a 9-6 win at UNF on Tuesday, though once again the bullpen allowed the game to be closer than it should have been.

The offense, however, continued to hum at a torrid pace. Florida opened the game with three straight singles and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Butler put the Gators on the board early.

UNF answered in the home half of the first on an error at second that allowed A Kachler to score.

Florida added four runs in the third inning highlighted by freshman Colby Halter’s first collegiate triple and three RBIs.

Jordan Butler entered in relief of Garrett Milchin in the third and tossed three innings, allowing two runs to score including a solo homer by A. Sequera.

Ben Specht pitched the final four innings and was on cruise control until the ninth. UNF scored on an RBI triple by A. Sweatt and another homer from Sequera (this one a two run shot).

Florida evened their record to 2-2 on the season.

    Pitching Decision:

    • W: Jordan Butler (1-1)
    • L: Ethan Jones (0-1)
    • S: Specht (1)

    Individual Stats:

    • Halter: 3-5, 3B, R, 4 RBI
    • Young: 3-6, 2B, R, SB, RBI

    Wednesday:

Florida completed the home and home sweep with a 8 – 3 win over the Ospreys on Wednesday.

Jacob Young started things for the Florida offense by extending his hit streak to 23 games with a leadoff double after freshman RHP Chase Centala completed a 1-2-3 top half of the first. The Gators, however, did strand a pair of runners in the opening frame.

Florida finally reached the scoreboard in the third when Jud Fabian crushed a first pitch fastball to left center.

The Gators then added four runs in the fifth that included Fabian’s second homer of the game, a three run blast to left.

UNF’s R. Scott hit a bases clearing double, but that would be all the Ospreys could muster on Florida’s staff on this day. The Gators added two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to complete the scoring.

For Centala, the game represented another opportunity to show he belonged after a rough outing against Miami Friday night. Centala tossed four innings of scoreless ball while only allowing four hits. More importantly, the freshman didn’t walk anyone.

Christian Scott and Timmy Manning closed out the final three innings without yielding a run to clinch the victory.

    Pitching Decision:

    • W: Trey Van Der Weide (1-0)
    • L: M. McKinley (1-1)

    Individual Stats:

    • Fabian: 2-5, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 R, BB
    • Calilao: 2-3, 2 R, RBI, SF
    • Carrion: 2-3, BB, R

    What’s Next:

Florida will face Samford in weekend action. The series will span Friday through Sunday. The Bulldogs are 3-1 on the season after sweeping UT – Martin. They did drop a 11-9 decision to Alabama State on Saturday, however.
