• BSB: No. 1 Gators come from behind to take series from Troy

    Final: Florida 10, Troy 7

Photo by Kristen Oliff / ChompTalk.com

In any sport, the margin of error to beat the nation’s top ranked is extremely slim.

On Saturday, Troy found out just how small that margin was.

The Trojans built a 7-1 lead by the middle of the fourth inning, but five errors not only kept the Gators in the game, they cost Troy a shot at winning in Gainesville.

    How It Happened:

The Trojans got on the board first as Rigsby Mosley hit a grand slam to left center in the second inning.

W Sullivan added a run in the third with a single that bounced high off the mound, leaving Josh Rivera with no play and put the Gators behind 5-0.

Jud Fabian responded in the bottom of the third with a solo homer that cleared the Troy bullpen in right-center.

Troy came right back and tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to keep Florida behind the eight-ball.

A Cal Greenfield sacrifice fly to right scored Kendrick Calilao and the Gators began to chip away at the 7-1 deficit in the home half of the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Florida got another one back as Kendrick Calilao recorded an RBI single through the hole on the left side and played Kirby McMullen.

The gap closed to 7-4 in the sixth when speedster Cal Greenfield scored on a wild pitch.

In the seventh, the floodgates opened. Dalton Wilder came on in relief and it was as if Florida players saw blood in the water as the bullpen entered the game.

Wilder faced four batter and gave up two hits and two walks before being yanked from the contest. He would be tagged with three earned runs and hit with the loss.

The back-breaking play for the Trojans was a ball hit up the middle by Cody Acton that second baseman came up with and instead of opting for the play at second, threw to first and the throw went wide, allowing three runs to score to give the Gators a 10-7 lead.

Nick Pogue and Ben Specht finished the game, with Specht earning his second straight save.

    Individual Stats:

    • McMullen: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, BB
    • Calilao: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, BB
    • Young: 2-5, R

    Pitching Decision:

    • W: Luethje (1-0)
    • L: Wilder (0-1)
    • S: Specht (2)

    What’s Next:

The Gators will complete the series against Troy with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.

  • LAX: No. 8 Gators take down No. 3 Stony Brook

Final: Florida 12, Stony Brook 10

For the second time this season, Florida lacrosse has defeated a top-three ranked opponent.

Just two weeks after stunning No. 1 ranked Maryland, the Gators came back from a 5-1 first half deficit to top No. 3 Stony Brook.

    How It Happened:

Florida dug themselves an early hole as neither the offense or defense seemed to be in rhythm.

The Sea Wolves took a 5-1 lead with 11:12 remaining in the first half after Taryn Ohlmiller scored her second of th afternoon.

The Gators didn’t flinch, however, and over the final 8:48 of the first half, managed to tie the game entering halftime. Kassidy Bresnahan and Maggie Corbo both recorded their first goals of the season before Grace Haus added the equalizer.

After allowing a goal :43 into the second period, the Gators went on a 3-0 run to give them a 8-6 advantage.

The Sea Wolves fought back and tied the game at 8 in less than four minutes. Grace Haus responded less than a minute later, but the lead didn’t last long.

Tied at 9, Shannon Kavanagh added her fourth goal of the day to put the Gators back out front. Emily Heller added a foal a goal with 11:40 to play.

That was all Florida needed, though Brianna Harris added her 14th goal of the season with 2:32 left to clinch the victory.

    Individual Stats:

    • Kavanagh: 4 Goals, 1 Assist
    • Haus: 3 Goals, 1 Assist
    • Corbo: 2 Goals

    What’s Next:
Florida will travel to New Hampshire to take on No. 16 Dartmouth on Tuesday before returning home next Saturday for a bout with High Point.
  • BSB: No. 1 Gators rally to top Troy 3-2

Photo by Kristen Oliff / ChompTalk.com

It was a cold night in Gainesville on Friday, but for six innings, it was Florida’s bats that were the most frigid.

The Gators struggled against Troy’s ace, Levi Thomas, but pounced at the first opportunity against the Trojans’ bullpen to record a come from behind 3-2 victory on Friday.

The win moves Florida to 9-0 on the season, the program’s best start to a season under Kevin O’Sullivan.

    How It Happened:

The Trojans got on the scoreboard early with a first inning RBI single by Caleb Bartolero and added a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Easton Kirk.

Thomas kept the Gators’ hitter off balance all game, but his pitch count soared as Florida saw a lot of pitches in each at bat. Thomas finished the night with 108 pitches through six innings.

The Gators welcomed Troy’s relief by plating three runs in the seventh inning.

After a single and walk, Austin Langworthy delivered with a two out single to center that was misplayed by Trojans CF Reed Smith, allowing Josh Rivera to score.

One batter later, Kirby McMullen lined a shot just over the shortstop’s outstretched glove and into left field that scored both Nathan Hickey and Langworthy to put Florida on top.

Nick Pogue and Ben Specht finished the night by striking out the side. Specht earned his first save of 2020.

Starter Tommy Mace pitched well and earned the win. Despite scattering nine hits, the righty only gave up two runs and didn’t walk anyone in seven innings of work.

    Individual Stats:

    • Langworthy: 3-4, 2B, RBI, R
    • Young: 2-4
    • McMullen: 1-4, 2 RBI

    Pitching Decision:

    • W: Mace (2-0)
    • L: Thomas (2-1)
    • S: Specht (1)

    What’s Next:

Florida will continue its series against Troy on Saturday and Sunday. The first pitch on Saturday is slated for 4:00 PM while Sunday is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.

Photo by Brian Fox / ChompTalk.com

    Final: Florida 6, Louisiana 0

The #6 Florida Gators beat the #10 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns at home on Friday night by a score of 6-0. It was the first of a 3-game home series. Florida improved to 17-2 for the season (9-0 at home), while Louisiana dropped to 12-5 overall.

    Game Recap

Florida took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Charla Echols drove in Kendyl Lindaman on a single to the gap in left-center.

Natalie Lugo got the start for the Gators, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings before Katie Chronister entered the circle in relief.

Louisiana starting pitcher, Megan Kleist, settled in well following the first-inning hiccup until the fourth when Sophia Reynoso’s RBI-single extended the Gators lead to 2-0.

In the fifth, Florida added on two insurance runs thanks to Kendyl Lindaman’s moonshot solo home run over the Florida bullpen in left field. A few batters later, Julia Cottrill knocked an RBI-single up the middle to give the Gators a 4-0 lead.

An inning later, Charla Echols drove in Hannah Adams, and pinch-runner Sarah Longley scored as Echols got caught in a rundown. Florida would take a 6-0 advantage into the seventh inning.

The Gators took a 6-0 advantage into the seventh inning when Katie Chronister closed things out to simultaneously record her first win and Florida’s seventeenth win of the season.

  • WGYM Liveblog: No. 2 Florida at No. 10 Georgia

    GYM3007AB

With the SEC title all wrapped up, Florida’s last box to check off in SEC competition is simple: beat Georgia. In any sport, this rivalry is legendary, and in gymnastics, the stakes are even higher, as there’s a Baumann sister on both sides of the battle. Florida has been more consistent this season, but Georgia did beat the Gators last year at home, and this season the Gymdogs have battled past injury and low expectations to stay in the top ten. Florida is the obvious choice here, but crazier things have happened.

The keys for the Gators will be to show that last week’s landing problems were just a fluke, and that moving forward will look more like vault last week rather than bars or floor. Another key indicator to watch will be the beam lineup – will Sydney Johnson-Scharpf continue to make the final six? After one bobbly week and a fall the next, it may be time to rotate her out and let her take a mental break. Additionally, we should all be on Nya Reed watch: the sophomore showed almost a full floor routine during warmup last week in hopes of returning very soon. Will tonight see her return to competition?

It should be easy to tell very early on how close this meet will be based on Georgia’s performance. Rachael Lukacs and Sabrina Vega lead this young team after injury to senior Rachel Dickson early in the season. Lukacs typically leads the scoring on vault, with Vega putting up some good numbers recently, and Marissa Oakley is the easy 9.9+ scorer on bars. If the first two rotations don’t look good for those three, Georgia is unlikely as a whole to pull off the upset. If they aren’t the only ones with big scores, though, Georgia should feel very confident about its chances.

6:57pm: Setting up my watch setup now – let’s get hype!! Rivalry night!

    https://twitter.com/samisadancer/status/1233543300776374273?s=20

    7:02pm: Rotation 1!!

Magee, VT: FTY, little bit of an ankle crunch and a hop back.

Richards, UB: Maloney big leg sep, Bail looks okay. Last handstand good. DLO slide back.

Aaaand my quality turns to crap.

7:04pm: Ward, VT: Tsuk full, little bit piked, slide back.

Gowey, UB: Good first handstand. Ray is lovely, great amplitude. Pak has a little leg sep? DLO, swims for the stick but didn’t get it.

7:06pm: R Baumann, VT: FTY, big hop back. Slow mo shows some piking and some leg sep, too.

Hundley, UB: Good first handstand. Maloney good, pak a little lower leg sep. Van Leeuwen a little sep too. Sticks that full in! Yes girl!

7:08pm: Vega, VT: FTY, just a little baby slide back. Sooo clean in the air, cleanest we’ve seen so far tonight.

Skaggs, UB: Great first handstand from this angle. Tkachev to pak, just gorgeous. Good last handstand too! DLO stutter step back.

7:10pm: Hawthorne, VT: FTY, waaaay overpowers it, big slide back and another step back. Is she training something bigger? That was just enormous.

Schoenherr, UB: Jaeger is super floaty and great amplitude. Bail is solid. Good last handstand. Double front half out – did she stick? No, that was definitely an adjustment with her right foot.

7:12pm: Lukacs, VT: DTY, a little piked down but STUCK it. Wow. Hmmmm slow mo showed some adjustment.

Thomas, UB: Maloney to uprise is great. Pak a little archy but legs fine. Van Leeuwen good. DLO stuckkkkkk, no question there. 9.975! That’s huge for her at an away meet, that’ll help her NQS fix itself.

AFTER ONE: UF 49.325, UGA 49.275

    https://twitter.com/samisadancer/status/1233546156271194113?s=20

Sam said it, not me, but honestly I agree. Bars felt very tight up until Trin, and vault felt very high up until Lukacs. Both anchors felt pretty accurate to me, but we’ll see how scores are in the second rotation.

    7:20pm: Rotation two!

Skaggs, VT: FTY, stuck!! That’s a great start for the Gators.

Lukacs, UB: Tkachev was really low to the bar. Pak legs are all askew, oof. Did not hit 90 on that last handstand. DLO hop back.

7:22pm: Alexander, VT: FTY, so high and extended in the air, just a little hop on the landing.

Hattaway, UB: Good first handstand. Blind full to Gienger, a little messy but better than last week against Kentucky. Next handstand and bail are both rushed, kinda archy. DLO bounce back.

7:24pm: A Baumann, VT: Y1.5, landing kinda surprised her, little stutter step aside. Legs a little separated in the air too.

Vega, UB: Great first handstands on low bar. Toe shoot is good. Gienger is good, a little leg sep on the catch. Leg sep on the pak too, though not as bad as Lukacs. Short last handstand. Full in, little adjustment on the left foot.

7:26pm: Schoenherr, VT: Y1.5, just a little hop forward but much better than some previous weeks.

Roberts, UB: Short first handstand on the low bar. Maloney is beautiful, legs just pasted together, bail great too. DLO sticks! That’s a massive improvement from anything Georgia’s done on this event thus far tonight.

7:28pm: Thomas, VT: Y1.5, did she just stick?? Hmm slow mo shows the adjustment may not have been just bringing her feet together, but still easily her best vault this season.

de Jong, UB: Great first handstands. Tkachev is high but close to the bar. Bail is good. Solid last handstand. DLO underrotated, has to take a lunge forward.

7:30pm: Richards, VT: Y1.5, shuffle back. Definitely underrotated but covered well.

Oakley, UB: Jaeger is sooo floaty, that’s lovely. Pak has a little leg sep. Last handstand seemed a little short, full in, deep into her ankles and a big lunge forward.

AFTER TWO: UF 98.775, UGA 98.175

Like I said, after two, we kinda know. Six tenths is a lot of ground for Georgia to make up, especially heading into beam and floor, where Florida has been pretty dominant.

    https://twitter.com/samisadancer/status/1233549669109764096?s=20

Thomas will win vault with a 9.95, which matches her career high! She’ll also easily win bars with her 9.975.

    https://twitter.com/Chazelena/status/1233550348519968769?s=20

    7:38pm: Rotation 3!

Magee, BB: Dance elements good, great split positions. Triple series, so calm. Roundoff 1.5, step to the side.

7:40pm: Gowey, FX: Front lay to Rudi to stag, a little wild in the air like last week. Dance elements are lovely as always. Double tuck MUCH better than last week, very well controlled.

7:42pm: Hawthorne, BB: In for Lukacs tonight, we’ll see how she does. Bhs loso, thought she had it but had to check herself. Not sure what that second jump was but okay? Front toss to sissone, little check. Roundoff 1.5 hop forward.

    https://twitter.com/samisadancer/status/1233553232364023809?s=20

You bet that’s what Jenny is telling the girls right now.

7:44pm: Hundley, FX: Whip double tuck, solid. Double pike, even she looked surprised by her landing! It was a good one. Straddle positions are good. 1.5 to front lay is good, a little low in the second element. Another solid one.

7:46pm: de Jong, BB: Full turn, balance check. Switch to split, good. Front aerial to beat, a little tight it seems. Bhs loso, stays steady. Straddle from side stand, why??? Does not hit 180. Step on the dismount it looked like.

7:48pm: SJS, FX: Double arabian, a little short but pops it out into a lunge to cover. 1.5 to front lay, seemed like she skidded a little. Dance elements are solid. Double tuck is easily her best pass of the routine, well controlled.

7:50pm: Oakley, BB: Single wolf turn, lovely. Billy Joel for her beam music, that’s an interesting choice but I dig it. Oooh pretty, gainer bhs to bhs loso and she’s off. Welp. That’s the meet right there, guys. Split to split ring jump, lovely. Side aerial, another check. Gainer full dismount is stuck, but it’s too little too late.

7:52pm: Reed, FX: She’s back! Yes! DLO, this angle is AWFUL and I can’t tell if she went OOB or not. Sloan thinks she did but also says no hand went up? So I don’t know. Front to Rudi, a little bouncy. She looks winded after that last choreo section. Double pike to finish, a little low on the landing. Maybe she came back too early. Roethlisberger says the flag did go up, so she will get that OOB penalty. Maybe that’s not the meet.

7:54pm: R Baumann, BB: Side aerial loso, so solid, wow. Her full turn technique is so weird, but it works for her. Beat to switch side, good. Roundoff 1.5 twist, hop forward. That’s a good reset for Georgia.

7:56pm: Thomas, FX: DLO, SO well controlled. Front full to front lay, doesn’t need to jump out of it but does it anyway. Leap positions are good, good control coming out. Double pike, maybe a little awkward in the landing but that’s a great reset for the Gators too.

7:58pm: Vega, BB: Switch to ring? Yang Bo? Throws her head back but I didn’t see any bend in her back leg. Front aerial to beat, balance check. Oof. Moonwalk, crowd goes nuts. Bhs loso, another small check. Full turn, steady. Side aerial back full STUCK! Georgia needed that.

8:00pm: A Baumann, FX: Double tuck, great control. 1.5 to front full, super smooth into the pose out of it. So sharp through her choreo, dance elements are just perfection. Double pike, little bounce but seemed short? Either way a deduction, but still, a very strong score for Florida.

AFTER THREE: UF 148.150, UGA 147.350

Florida extends its lead to a full eight tenths heading into the final rotation.

This. Bridget Sloan just tried to say (twice) that Alyssa Baumann normally does a double layout in her opening pass, but that just isn’t the case. She’s trained it forever, but after a very scary landing two years ago (which a former colleague of mine captured on camera), assistant coach Adrian Burde has not given her the OK to compete it again. She warms it up almost every home meet and it looks tremendously improved since her freshman season, but it still hasn’t seen the light of day.

8:08pm: Last one best one, let’s go!

Richards, BB: Lovely high toe work to open. Triple series, super straight, nice. Switch to straddle, small bobble there? Side aerial back full stuck! Great start, she’s such a star.

8:10pm: Perez-Lugones, FX: I actually love this routine, it was one of my favorites when I saw Georgia here in Orlando the first week of this season. Super high double pike to open, nice! Whip half to front lay, nice. Straddle positions are nice in the air, wolf full is a little wild. Double tuck to finish, very solid.

8:12pm: Hundley, BB: Looks like SJS is indeed out tonight. Front aerial to sissone, great. Bhs loso, locks it in place, good for her. Beat to switch side, maybe a little low on that straddle position? Full turn, good. Roundoff 1.5 twist, stuck and she celebrates! Great return to the lineup for her.

8:14pm: Roberts, FX: Piked full in, huge air but landing out of control, has to take an extra step back after her lunge. Front lay to front full, doesn’t use her whole tumbling line but plenty of control and amplitude in her elements. Double pike to close, again solid amplitude, much better control there though.

8:16pm: A Baumann, BB: Switch to split, perfection. Bhs loso, so steady. Switch half, lovely. Full turn, ain’t no thang for this Gator. Side aerial, gorgeous. She is on FIRE tonight. She wants to outscore her sister I bet. Roundoff 1.5 twist, gets that stick! Let’s go!

8:18pm: R Baumann, FX: Sisters going back to back, love this. Triple wolf turn to open, no biggie. 1.5 to front full just like big sis, good control out of it. Turn combo into a switch leap, all clean through there. Showing off that flexibility and toe point in the choreo here. Double pike, ooh very short and almost falls forward, doesn’t put a knee or hands down though, good. Dance elements at the end good, but the damage there was done.

P.S. Alyssa won the battle won on all three of their events.

8:20m: Gowey, BB: Switch to split, textbook. Triple series, just gorgeous. Front aerial to sissone, great. Gainer full dismount is stuck? Ooh, too soon, just a small step. Still, very little to deduct through there.

8:21pm: Hawthorne, FX: Huge double pike, huge bounce back, but doesn’t go OOB. Just let the girl do the E pass, Courtney. Dance sequence is good, nice splits. Front lay to Rudi to split, a little bouncy on the landing. Double tuck, also very high and has some trouble controlling it as it comes down.

8:23pm: Thomas, BB: Switch to split leap, good. Full turn, fine. One-arm bhs to loso, solid. Front aerial to beat to korbut, lovely and quick through connections. Side aerial back full, bounce on the landing.

8:25pm: Lukacs, FX: DLO to open, great control in the landing. 1.5 to front half to Shushunova, very nice. Good positions and control in dance series. Double pike to finish, just a little short, had to hop forward.

8:26pm: Clapper, BB: Bhs loso loso, adjusted mid air to make sure she was good to go. Switch to split, good. Side aerial back full stuck! Team chanting, “Leah, Leah!” is absolutely precious.

8:28pm: Vega, FX: I’m obsessed with the opening of this routine. Ok, the whole routine. Ha. Full in to open, a little bouncy but covers well. 1.5 to front lay to split jump, good. Dance elements all have great positions in the air. Double pike to finish, a little slide of the front foot. A huge score for her, but just not mathematically possible to catch up to Florida. I hope she gets a 10 before season is out. (Is that sacrilege? Oh well!)

    FINAL: UF 197.8, UGA 196.5

    https://twitter.com/samisadancer/status/1233564113240018945?s=20

Tonight, Trinity Thomas ties Alex McMurtry, Bridget Sloan, and Alaina Johnson for the best AA total in Florida program history! And she’s only a sophomore – she has so much time to beat that record. She’s also just tied Kyla Ross for the highest AA score this season. She also won vault, bars, and floor, while teammate Alyssa Baumann wins beam with a huge 9.975.

Tonight’s 197.8 will immensely help Florida’s NQS, replacing a 196.85 from its meet against Missouri earlier this season.

The accolades just keep coming! And the Gators aren’t just undefeated in the SEC, they’re undefeated. Period.

Thanks for joining me tonight! Tune in this weekend for my recap of this meet, because tonight was a huge night for the Gators and you don’t want to miss a single superlative or highlight of this legendary season.

  • Gators land 4-star TE Gage Wilcox

The acquisition of Tim Brewster is already paying dividends for the Florida Gators football program. The newly added tight ends coach is credited with landing the highly sought after talents of Gage Wilcox out of Jefferson High School in Tampa, Florida. The 6’4″ 228-pound tight end is the 248-rated prospect in the 2021 class.

Landing the 4-star commitment gives the Gators a 2021 class score of 213.14 and positions them just behind Ohio State with the second-ranked class in the nation. Wilcox has a 247Sports composite rating of 0.9090 and is expected to climb before national signing day. The talented athlete recorded a 4.80 forty time at The Opening Regional as well as a 34.60″ vertical leap.

Just as important as landing this commitment is the fact that the Gators beat out programs such as Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, and Florida State to earn it. Florida has slowly and methodically improved their recruiting efforts and that could spell danger for the rest of the nation.

  • Miceli: 3 Takeaways From Gators Spring Game Against Pro Finland Team

Photo by Kristen Oliff / ChompTalk.com

After defeating Miami 2-1 in their first spring game last week, the Gators continued their offseason tune-ups against Finnish top-tier side Tikkurilian Palloseura Thursday night in a chilly Gainesville.

In typical spring game fashion, it was a night of heavy rotation and experimentation for the Gators, but it did not end well. Florida was up 3-1 before conceding three unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes to lose by a final score of 4-3.

Here are three takeaways from the Gators inconsistent performance:

New Players On Defense Have Big Shoes To Fill

The departure of senior Julia Lester leaves a starting centerback role vacant.

Someone new will start alongside Georgia Eaton-Collins next year, and rising sophomores Syd Kennedy and Alexia Fotopoulos, and rising junior Taylor Baksay all tried to play the part Thursday night. None filled the role particularly well, as they misplaced passes and sometimes looked uncomfortable in possession when on the field en route to a late defensive collapse.

They’ve got plenty of time to grow, though, with four spring games remaining.

    Dynamic Offense

Speedy wingers were a crucial part to Becky Burleigh’s offense last year, and it looked the same on Thursday. Kit Loferski stood out especially, grabbing herself the first goal of the night.

Nicole Vernis, who did not appear once last year due to injury, played centrally and really impressed. She displayed clever control and assisted Cassidy Lindley for the second goal of the night.

    Same Formation

The Gators often employed a 4-3-3 formation that transitioned to three at the back when in possession last year. Sammie Betters played right back and would move up and supplement the midfield when Florida had the ball.

With Betters’ departure, a new player must fill the unique and demanding role. Loferski and rising junior forward Samantha Tobar both tried Thursday night, and both looked pretty good. Although it is not certain who will play the position moving forward, it seems Burleigh wants to stick with it.

  • MBB: Johnson and Lewis lead Gators past LSU

    Final: Florida 81, LSU 66

Photo by Kristen Oliff / ChompTalk.com

Florida returned home after a tough loss to Kentucky over the weekend and welcomed SEC rival LSU on Wednesday. Behind the efforts of Keyontae Johnson and Scottie Lewis, the Gators waxed the Tigers, 81-66.

    How it happened:

Florida got off to a hot start Wednesday night, taking a 14-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game, spearheaded by Scottie Lewis’ 4 points.

The array of shots continued to fall for the Gators as Scottie Lewis scored five straight to push the advantage to a 23-12.

Florida continued this hot start for the first 10 minutes of the game, pushing out to 29-16. The Gators spread the wealth around behind the leadership of Keyontae Johnson & an alley oop dunk to extend the lead to 37-25 with 3 to play in the half. As the half came to a close so did the Gators hot streak scoring just 4 points in the final 3 minutes of the half and take a 41-31 lead into the break.

Florida held to Skylar Mays to just 3 points in the first half. Mays has averaged 16.4 points on the year.

LSU came out of the half fast. Scoring four points in the first minute to close the gap to 11.

Florida battled and managed to keep the lead intact, forcing an LSU timeout at 16:00 up 51-37. Scottie Lewis pulled up for another trey, and again knocked it down despite an LSU player in his grill.

Florida was serving up treys like a waiter coming out of the break. UF led 60-42 with 11:30 to play. LSU came out of the time out in a full court press, trailing by 15. The press may have been too little too late as the Gators continued to keep the lead in double digits.

With five minutes to play LSU closed it to a 10 point lead. As soon as LSU got close, Scottie Lewis threw down a dagger of an alley oop on a beautiful feed from Nembhard from the three point line.

Florida kept the pressure applied late, with some spoon fed buckets by the LSU defense.

The 6’5″ 230-pound defensive end is listed as a three-star athlete with a composite rating of 0.8839 according to 247Sports. David Turner is credited as Boone’s primary recruiter and secured the commitment despite South Carolina holding 100% of the crystal balls.

The talented edge rusher is yet another sign that the Gators are becoming as much of a contender on the recruiting trail as they are on the field.

After tough loss to then-No. 12 Loyola at home, the Gators were in desperate need of a morale boost in the form of a sizable win.

Fresh off a drubbing at the hands of the Greyhounds, No. 8 Florida drubbed Kennesaw State, 21-6, today in Georgia.

Saturday saw a stalled Gators (3-1) offense score a season-low six goals. In today’s matchup, 11 of Florida’s players found the back of the net a combined 21 times — both season highs. The previous figures were four players for 15 goals in the upset against Maryland.

Following Saturday’s game, coach Amanda O’Leary stressed that the Gators needed production out of more players than junior captain Shannon Kavanagh. Five of Florida’s 21 goals came off the bench. Redshirt freshman Lexie Morton, senior Madisyn Kittell and freshmen Jill Quigley, Lexi Ashby and Shelton Sawers all produced one goal for the Gators.

Florida made 84 percent of its shots on goal against the Owls, an improvement of nearly 19 percent over its most productive game before today.

Heading into the game versus Kennesaw State, one of the Gators’ main concerns was foul trouble. Florida falls in the top 25 percent of teams with the most fouls per game in all of NCAA Division I lacrosse. Against Loyola, the Gators had 26 fouls. Against the Owls, Florida committed 10 fouls — more than 50 percent less than its season-low against Maryland prior to today’s matchup.

The Gators will be back in Donald R. Dizney Stadium this Saturday to take on No. 3 Stony Brook at 12 p.m.
