• MBB: Gators defeat Georgia 68-54 in Athens

    Final: Florida 68, Georgia 54

Florida overcame a sloppy start to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs on the road on Wednesday.

Led by Keyontae Johnson’s eighth double-double of the season, the Gators secured its 19th win of the season.

    How It Happened:

Florida opened the game cold from the floor and allowed Georgia to knock down their first four attempts from three point range and build a 19-6 advantage just over five minutes into the contest.

The Gators followed with an 8-0 run immediately and finally tied things up with 2:25 to play in the half. By half, the Gators trailed by two at 32-30.

Although Florida opened the second half with a quick bucket from Johnson, the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 36-30.

Florida, however, did not back down. A pair of Andrew Nembhard made free throws finally put the Gators on top with 7:29 to play. Florida would not relinquish that lead, but in fact extended it to as many as fourteen by the end of the game.

  • BSB: No. 1 Gators down FAMU behind spectacular outing by Tyler Nesbitt, bullpen

Tyler Nesbitt likely couldn’t have written a better script for his first collegiate start.

The freshman righty tossed four innings, striking out eight and only walking one in addition to allowing just one base hit and leading the Gators to a 5-0 win over Florida A&M.

While Nesbitt starred on the mound, another freshman made his presence known in the batters box.

    How It Happened:

Florida got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Josh Rivera singled to left to score Jacob Young, who led off the frame by hitting in his 14th consecutive game.

The Gators added another run in the third when Jordan Butler doubled down the right field line to score Jud Fabian.

Florida broke the game open in the fifth on a pair of home runs including a majestic shot over the scoreboard by freshman Nathan Hickey (first of his career) to lead off the inning. Jordan Butler crushed a two-run shot down the right field line four batters later.

Justin Alintoff, Brandon Sproat, and Ryan Cabarcas finished off the Rattlers out of the bullpen. They allowed just two hits over the final five innings of the contest.

On Tuesday the Florida baseball team will have a chance to achieve something no other UF team has accomplished in the 100+ year history of the program.

The 2020 incarnation has the opportunity to open the season with twelve straight wins with a victory over Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton on Tuesday.

So let’s get right into the wrap-up:

    __________

    Overall Record: 11-0

    SEC Record: N/A

    National Ranking (D1Baseball): 1

    Last Week:

    • 2/25 vs FAMU – PPD
    • 2/26 at Stetson – PPD
    • 2/28 vs Troy – W
    • 2/29 vs Troy – W
    • 3/1 vs Troy – W

Pitcher of the Week: Tommy Mace

    • 1-0, 7 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Florida’s ace engaged in an old fashioned pitchers duel on Friday night.

Unfortunately, for the righty from Tampa, it looked like he was going to take his first L of the season, until the Gators’ offense picked him up in the bottom of the seventh.

Despite scattering nine hits, Mace kept his team in the game and didn’t walk a single batter.

Player of the Week: Jacob Young

    • 6-12, BB, R

For the second straight week, Jacob Young is the choice.

Despite not hitting for power or recording a single extra base hit, Young went 6-12 and extended his hitting streak to ten games and has hit safely multiple times in six straight. Overall his batting average is .436 on the season and his on-base percentage is .500.

  • Around the Diamond: Florida’s pitching flounders show inexperience

When freshman lefty Rylee Trlicek trotted out for her second inning with a four-run lead over No. 10 Louisiana on Saturday, it remained to be seen if she could stonewall elite softball programs on a consistent basis.

Her contact-style worked in a win over No. 7 Arizona, as she allowed only one earned run. It earned her a close loss against No. 1 UCLA, where she was given a tight four-inning leash despite letting in just two runs, none earned.

Trlicek relinquished a double in the first inning against the Ragin’ Cajuns, and after committing a throwing error that loaded the bases, she couldn’t remain calm. Louisiana rattled-off three consecutive hits to score five runs, and her weekend was over.

Yes, it hurts to watch a freshman be a freshman. But it’s not shocking.

A bad game from a freshman is almost always inevitable at some point, especially when they rattle-off an impressive 7-1 record to start their collegiate careers.

Saturday’s defeat, made Sunday’s repeat blown lead an even tougher pill to swallow—junior Natalie Lugo hurled five scoreless innings before unravelling in the sixth and seventh.

But now, Trlicek and the entire UF pitching staff have adversity to respond to. With an SEC tilt with Auburn just one game away, we see how good this inexperienced pitching staff can be.

    Current Record:
17-4 (ranked No. 6 in NFCA Coaches Poll)

    Last Week (Monday-Sunday): 1-2
    W 6-0 vs. No. 10 Louisiana (Friday)
    L 5-7 vs. No. 10 Louisiana (Saturday)
    L 6-7 vs. No. 10 Louisiana (Sunday)

Offensive Player of the Week: Kendyl Lindaman

Lindaman was 4 for 9 with five RBIs and two home runs over the weekend. She extended her RBI streak to nine games, seven of which came against Top 25 opponents.

Pitcher of the Week: Katie Chronister

Despite being a senior, Chronsiter only had 45.1 innings of experience in her three previous seasons as a Gator. But 21 games into 2020, she’s already equaled her inning count from last year (10.1). The Gainesville native picked up her first win of the campaign, tossing 3.2 scoreless inning on Friday. She did give up a critical run due to a wild pitch on Saturday, but just one run over 7.1 total innings is a fantastic contribution.

    Upcoming Games:
Home vs. Florida Gulf Coast (Wednesday, 6 p.m.)
Home vs. Auburn (Friday, 6 p.m.)
Home vs. Auburn (Saturday, 6 p.m.)
Home vs. Auburn (Sunday, 3 p.m.)

  • WGYM: Florida Beats Georgia in Athens, Continuing Undefeated Season

In a mirror image of last year’s rivalry night, Florida beat Georgia in Stegeman Coliseum and made it look easy. The scoring was odd in places, but overall, this meet highlighted Florida’s strengths and weaknesses pretty obviously and showed why the Gators have separated themselves from the rest of the SEC so starkly this season.

As the away team, Florida started out on bars. The team started out a little slow, with some leg separation and landing errors from the first two routines, but it was like Amelia Hundley flipped a switch when she stuck her dismount. All three routines following her were spot on: Megan Skaggs and Savannah Schoenherr both nailed their handstands and had huge amplitude, though the landings were still missing, and Trinity Thomas put together a huge routine that earned a 9.975. Meanwhile, Georgia put up a variety of vaults that were almost all missing their landings. Rachael Lukacs had the Dogs’ only stuck vault, but it was a doozy, earning her an enormous 9.925. That brought Georgia’s total up to 49.275, just half a tenth behind Florida’s 49.325.

The second rotation is where the Gators really began to shine. All their hard work on vault has really paid off, with two sticks and several others with just small steps. Alyssa Baumann and Payton Richards did have some underrotation problems but kept the visible errors small, while Thomas put up what may have been the best vault of her college career, sticking her Y1.5. Meanwhile, Georgia had trouble on bars, only breaking 9.8 on two of its six routines. Handstands and leg separations gave the Gymdogs trouble, and only Megan Roberts was able to find her landing. Georgia has struggled to fill out a bars lineup this season as it’s dealt with injury after injury, first to team leader Rachel Dickson and then to freshman Amanda Cashman. Georgia has fully exhausted its currently available depth, while Florida has gone virtually injury-free this year, allowing the Gators to explore their options and choose the best six. That depth is one of the key factors giving Florida the edge this season over so many opponents.

Floor has also been a showpiece for Florida throughout this season, lighting up crowds at home and away arenas alike. Yes, there were some missteps this week, including Nya Reed’s out-of-bounds penalty, but that wasn’t entirely unexpected as she returns from illness. But four of the six in the Gators’ lineup this week scored 9.875 or better, with Thomas and Baumann capping off the lineup with 9.95 and 9.9, respectively. While the Gators did their thing on floor, the Gymdogs struggled on beam with a fall and two more routines under 9.85. Staying calm under pressure is another way the Gators have set themselves apart this season – every time there’s a miss, the rest of the rotation steps it up and covers for them. Many teams, including Georgia, have struggled to do that, particularly on beam.

The final rotation brought Florida to beam and Georgia to floor. Florida started off with a strong score from Richards, but Hundley had a few bobbles after her for just a 9.775 in her return to the beam lineup after a few weeks out. However, a great reset by Baumann earned a huge 9.975, beating sister Rachel on all three events they both competed. From then on, the beam team just kept pushing forward, culminating in a pair of 9.95s from Thomas and Leah Clapper. Georgia had landing error after landing error, with last passes coming up short and first passes being overpowered on almost every routine. Sabrina Vega in the anchor slot was, of course, a highlight for them, scoring a 9.9, but one high score was not going to save Georgia’s night.

When all was said and done, Florida totaled a massive 197.8, which should give its NQS a big boost. This meet is yet another feather in the Gators’ collective cap, further separating them from the pack. There are things to work on still, especially if they’re going to have a prayer of defeating Oklahoma come April, but if all goes according to plan, this was the team’s last major hurdle before postseason. They’ll go into SECs undefeated with some massive momentum, so prepare for the Gators to do even greater things.

  • WBB: Gators enter SEC Tournament as No. 10 seed; will face LSU on Thursday
Photo by Kristen Oliff / ChompTalk.com

The Florida Gators earned an opening round bye for this week’s SEC women’s basketball Tournament.

While the tournament is set to begin on Wednesday, the Gators won’t tip-off until Thursday evening.

Florida will face LSU in the tournament’s quarterfinals. The Tigers are 19-9 on the season and finished the conference slate with a 9-7 record.

In January, the two teams met in Gainesville and LSU took a 77-68 win back to the Bayou.

The Gators finished with a 15-14 overall record and a 6-10 mark in league play. A .500 record clinches Florida’s eligibility to receive a post-season bid.

  • BSB: Gators sweep Troy to open season 11-0

    Final: Florida 7, Troy 1

Photo by Kristen Oliff / ChompTalk.com

Florida spent the first two nights of this weekend’s series against Troy battling early deficits to earn come from behind victories.

On Saturday, the Gators opted to score early and play with a lead on their way to a 7-1 victory to complete the three game sweep.

Florida is now 11-0 for the first time since 2002 and the team will have the opportunity to earn the program’s best start ever with a win on Tuesday.

    How It Happened:

Jordan Butler opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when he doubled home Kirby McMullen.

The Gators added another two-out run in the third inning when Kendrick Calilao was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Jud Fabian. Florida however missed an opportunity to break the game open as the threat ended with just the one run crossing the plate.

In the following inning, Troy got on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored Caleb Bartolero.

The Gators tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth. Austin Langworthy was awarded home on a balk by Troy’s M Oates. Jordan Butler who moved up to second on the balk scored two batters later on Calilao’s sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, Jud Fabian broke the game wide open with a three run bomb to left that may have hit the O’Connell Center.

Armed with an early lead, freshman Hunter Barco pitched extremely well in his second act as a weekend starter.

Barco struck out nine in five innings of work while only allowing four hits and walking one.

Sophomore Christian Scott returned to the mound and delivered three innings for the Gators, allowing just one base hit.

    Individual Stats:

    Game Recap

Florida once again took the first lead, scoring four runs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Julia Roberts drove in leadoff hitter, Hannah Adams, on a 2-out RBI-single up the middle of the infield. Kendyl Lindaman followed that up with a 3-run bomb over the centerfield wall in the second inning, extending Florida’s lead to 4-0.

Florida starting pitcher, Natalie Lugo, cruised through the first five innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits. In the sixth, however, Lugo ran into some trouble. Centerfielder, Raina O’Neal launched 2-run homer to left-center to cut the lead to one run. Just a few batters later, Taylor Roman delivered an RBI-double to tie the game at 4 a piece.

As Lugo ran into trouble in the circle for Florida, Louisiana’s Summer Ellyson and Megan Kleist hurled a combined four consecutive scoreless innings after a shaky first two innings.

The two teams entered the seventh inning tied at 4. Louisiana broke the tie in the top half of the inning, adding on three runs on a 2-out rally. Carrie Boswell capped off the rally with a 2-run home run to left before Katie Chronister entered the circle in relief for Lugo. Chronister recorded the last out of the inning, and the Gators trailed 7-4 heading into the final half inning of the game.

Hannah Adams led off the inning with a hit by pitch, and Charla Echols drove in Adams and herself on a 2-run homer to make it a 1-run game with just 1 out. Ellyson was able to recover, however, as she quickly got the next two batters out to secure Louisiana’s narrow victory.

Photo by Kristen Oliff / ChompTalk.com

The #6 Florida Gators narrowly lost the second of a 3-game home series against the #10 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday afternoon. The series is now tied, and game three will be held tomorrow at noon. With the loss, the Gators drop to 17-3 overall (9-1 at home), while Louisiana’s victory improves its record to 13-5 (3-3 away).

    Game Recap

Florida’s offense heated up early on as the Gators’ first six batters reached base safely. Leadoff hitter, Hannah Adams, scored the first run of the game on a double by Jordan Roberts. Charla Echols and Roberts then reached home safely on a wild pitch and an error on Louisiana’s catcher, respectively. Florida added on one more run before the end of the inning on a fielder’s choice to take an early 4-0 lead.

Florida starting pitcher, Rylee Trlicek, had a rough outing in the circle as she ran into trouble in the second inning. Trlicek recorded only one out in the inning before allowing five runs on four hits and two errors, one of which was a throwing error on herself. Two of the runs were scored on Carrie Boswell’s pinch-hit triple down the right-field line. Following the outburst of Louisiana runs, Elizabeth Hightower entered the circle in relief and got the final two outs for Florida to end the inning trailing 5-4.

After two consecutive high-scoring half innings, the pitching and defenses for both teams settled in nicely. Florida RHP Danni Farley did however struggle to find the strike-zone in the fourth as she allowed a 4-pitch bases-loaded walk. The Ragin’ Cajuns would carry a 6-4 advantage until the seventh inning when they tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the inning on a wild pitch by Katie Chronister. The wild pitch was the only hiccup for Chronister, who hurled 3.1 strong innings while allowing just one earned run on two hits.

In the bottom half of the inning, Louisiana pitcher Megan Kleist needed just nine pitches to hand Florida its third loss of the season. The Gators did score one run in the seventh on Kendyl Lindaman’s sacrifice fly, but it was not enough to pull off the comeback.

    Notable Stats

    • Katie Chronister (3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1.58 season ERA)
    • Kendyl Lindaman (1-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB)

    • All-time series between Florida and Louisiana is now tied 6-6
