Michael Pfeffer lives in Knoxville, TN with his wife and daughter. Growing up in South Florida, he has been a lifelong Florida Gators fan. When not writing, he enjoys spending time with his family and volunteering at church and with a prison ministry.
A great weekend on the recruiting trail just got even better for the Florida Gators. Four star OLB Derek Wingo pledged his commitment to Florida in Saturday night.
Wingo is the eleventh ranked LB in the 2020 class and checks in at number 142 overall nationally. The 6’2″ 210-pound Ft. Lauderdale native comes from the prestigious St. Thomas Aquinas High School and boasts a 247Sports composite score of 93.55%.
Wingo had his pick when it came to prospective colleges and chose Florida over twenty-eight others, including FSU, Georgia, Miami, and Auburn. After an abysmal May, the Gators are trending hot as we head into July.
Linebackers coach Christian Robinson and wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales were Wingo’s primary recruiters and were integral in luring him away from Penn State, where he was committed since Christmas Day.
Three star prospect, Tre’Vez Johnson announced his commitment to the Florida Gators on Saturday following an unofficial visit. The Jacksonville native hails from Bartram Trail High School.
At 5’11” 175 pounds, the 2020 cornerback runs a 4.5 forty yard dash. While only a three star, Johnson seems to have flown just under the radar and is a bit underrated with a 247Sports composite score of 82.15%. He received twenty-four other offers before committing to the Gators and defensive backs coach, Torrian Gray was instrumental in bringing the young talent to Gainesville.
Currently, Johnson is listed as the 202nd ranked prospect in the state.
After decommiting from Kentucky, 2020 four star DT Lamar Goods has flipped to the University of Florida. Hailing from St. Thomas More in Oakdale, CT, Goods provides a large frame and an aggressively hostile playing style to Florida’s defensive line.
The 6’4″ 290-pound recruit has been the recipient of the full press by defensive line coach, David Turner. Goods was very impressed with his visit on June 14th and has trended towards the Gators ever since.
Currently holding a 247Sports composite score of 89.3%, Goods is ranked thirtieth at his position and is the fourth ranked player out of the state of Connecticut.
The Gators beat out several others for his commitment, including rivals Georgia and Tennessee. Goods has received eleven total offers up to now but is a solid commitment for Dan Mullen and his staff.
The Jamaican women’s national team has struggled in it’s World Cup debut. Despite their 2019 journey coming to an end with a 4-1 loss to Australia, the team had much to celebrate as they scored their first ever World Cup goal.
Halftime substitute and former Florida Gator, Havana Solaun found the back of the net four minutes into the second half.
Solaun received a perfect through ball from Khadija Shaw and weaved past the Australian goalkeeper before angling a shot to the far corner of the net.
In 90 contests with Florida from 2011-14, the Buchholz High product scored 30 goals and recorded 32 assists. Solaun earned first team All-SEC honors in 2013 and 2014 and All-Freshman honors in 2011.

Lorenz enjoyed a 4-11 week at the plate to go along with a homer and 3 RBI. To end the week, she recorded back-to-back 2-hit, 2-run games as the USSSA Pride handed the Chicago Bandits their first two losses of the season.
The home run was a sixth inning solo shot off former UF teammate Kelly Barnhill.
Former Florida Gators star Pete Alonso has made quite the mark on Major League Baseball in his rookie campaign.
Alonso has generated statistics that have never been seen by a rookie in the Big Apple.
With his 23rd homer of the season on Saturday, Alonso pulled past MVP-favorite Cody Bellinger for second place in the National League, just two behind defending NL MVP Christian Yelich.
Alonso has been a force in the Mets lineup all season and the stats prove it. In addition to homers and (53) RBI, the slugger from Tampa also ranks in the top ten in the NL in slugging percentage(.612) and on-base + slugging(.962; despite having just a .264 batting average).
Alonso also ranks in the top ten in many advanced metrics such as offensive WAR (wins above replacement), where he ranks 8th in the league.
So what’s the problem?
The fans of Major League Baseball haven’t taken notice. A player with stats like this – a rookie, no less – should be among the leaders in the All-Star Game fan vote.
As of June 10th, when the MLB revealed the first return of voting, Alonso ranked fifth among National League first basemen.
Note: the MLB and MLBPA approved changes to the All-Star voting. The top three vote getters will move on to an election for the ASG starter.
While all four have strong cases for an All-Star game invite, the argument here is that Pete Alonso has become a box office attraction.
With the exception of Josh Bell, every other player currently ranked ahead of Alonso has several bats before and after them in the lineup that help to inflate their stats.
The 2019 MLB All-Star game will be played on Tuesday July 9 in Cleveland, Ohio. You can vote for the representatives at: vote here.
Florida head coach Dan Mullen received some good news on Sunday as three-star OT Gerald Mincey announced his commitment to the Florida Gators on Sunday night. The 6’5″ 324-pound lineman hails from Cardinal Gibbons High School out of Ft. Lauderdale.
The commitment comes on the heels of an official visit and is another very important addition for offensive line coach John Hevesy. Florida is adding a lot of beef and depth to a position group that is perceived as the main weakness on the current roster.
Mincey was originally set to announce his commitment in October, but decided now was the time after his visit to the Gainesville campus.
Mincey is currently rated as the No. 102 OT in the 2020 class and has a 247Sports composite score of 84.16%. The Gators beat out rivals FSU, Georgia, and Miami as well as a host of other programs for the mauler’s services.
Florida offensive line coach John Hevesy added some depth to the line on Friday night when Miami Christian offensive lineman, Jovens Janvier pledged his commitment to the Gators.
The 6’3″ 350-pound senior is currently listed as the forty-second ranked OG in the class of 2020.
β Jovens Janvier π¦ (@runitupjojo_70) June 8, 2019
The three star prospect fielded offers from eleven schools in total and his decision was primarily between Florida and Louisville. Janvier has a massive frame and will develop under Hevesy’s instruction and Coach Savage’s strength and conditioning.
The 2018 season began with a group of very talented guys on the offensive line that just didn’t really know how to play with, or for, each other. A unit that featured a former five-star recruit in Martez Ivey, just never lived up to the expectations set before them. That is, at least, until Dan Mullen and John Hevesy came along to teach them the Gators’ standard.
The results were evident as the season progressed. A unit that began the season by being manhandled by Kentucky’s front seven, finished by imposing their will on a talented (and No. 1 ranked) Michigan defense in the Peach Bowl. The same unit that allowed their quarterback to be sacked thirty-seven times in 2017, gave up only 18 in 2018. To be fair, some of that can be credited to improved quarterback play.
So what’s the point? Florida’s offensive line saw drastic improvement over the course of a single season. Largely, due to a higher level of accountability, strength and conditioning, and better coaching. We can look to last season’s progression as a sign of things to come.
The Gators are replacing four starters from last year’s line. In most scenarios this would be cause for great concern, and I don’t want to understate the importance of the development of this year’s unit and their maturation but things may not be as bleak as they seem.
Though the group lacks in-game experience, they are a very talented bunch with excellent football IQ’s. During the spring, many of the newcomers picked up the mental side of the system with alarming speed. Coach Hevesy said that the group was ahead of the curve in terms of where they should be in learning the system. This bodes well for them moving forward, although there is still much work to be done.
As the preseason approaches, the focus will be on creating depth and perfecting technique. The staff and, indeed, the veterans on the team will be applying plenty of pressure on this youthful group because there is no soft opening this year. The offensive line will be baptised by fire in front of a national primetime audience when they take on long time rival Miami in week zero. Apart from the pressure of the big stage, they will face a very good Hurricane’s defensive front.
With that in mind, here’s where they stand currently. Florida will return Nick Buchanan who performed quite well at center last year. He is the anchor to this unit and will be crucial to their success, as he will make the calls at the line.
At left tackle, Stone Forsythe provides a veteran, if not experienced, body. He is solidly ahead of redshirt freshman Richard Gouraige, who was expected to immediately press but never really showed that ability in the spring. The staff will need him to challenge for the spot, if only to provide useable depth.
Brett Heggie is the expected starter at left guard and played very well in nine games last season. If he can stave off the injury bug that afflicted him in 2018, he can be a big weapon for Hevesy’s group in 2019.
At right guard, Chris Bleich had a productive spring and showed a nastiness that coach John Hevesy loves to see out of his guys. He could end up splitting time at the right tackle position as well, with T.J. Moore filling out the rotation.
Finally, redshirt junior Jean Delance is slated to be the starter at right tackle. He is backed up by true freshman, Michael Tarquin, who has size in spades but may take a little while to develop, which is why there is an expectation that Bleich and Moore will be a part of the rotation.
As a whole, this group looks to be fairly solid in run-blocking, although they aren’t quite at the level that last year’s group was by the time the Peach Bowl rolled around. If they continue on the arc that they are currently on, we should see a unit that performs at a similar level by the year’s end.
The most glaring weaknesses at this point are slide protection and identifying the blitz. The only remedy for these issues are repetition and experience, which is why Dan Mullen will need to scheme around their weaknesses in the early going in a similar fashion to the way he negated the Miss State defensive front last season.
Wardrick Wilson and Deyavie Hammond are both expected to be able to push for immediate playing time this fall. The two freshman could end up replacing Ethan White and Michael Tarquin in the depth chart if they perform as well as they are expected to.
Ultimately, I expect to see a unit that is serviceable, not great, while they endure some growing pains in the early part of the season. Much like last year’s team, this one will get better down the stretch, becoming a formidable front for a very potent offense.
Day two of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft saw two Gators selected, one Florida signee chosen, and another Florida signee opting officially to go to school.
RHP Tyler Dyson was selected by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round with the 153rd overall pick.
Dyson was a hero in the 2017 College World Series and played an integral part in UF winning their first National Championship.
Dyson finished his career 11-5, but never found the knack he had in the postseason. He started the 2019 season as the Friday starter, but finished his collegiate career relegated to relief work.
In his last appearance, Dyson retired the Dallas Baptist side in order with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning on Sunday.
Gators OF Wil Dalton was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round with the 257th overall pick.
Dalton played at Florida for two years after transferring from Columbia State Community College in Tennessee. The junior crushed 27 homers and 94 RBI in the orange and blue.

Florida 2019 signee RHP Matthew Allan (Sanford, FL) finally got selected in the third round after being projected as a mid-first rounder.
