• FB: Adarius Lemons annouces intent to transfer immediately after loss to UK

It didn’t take long after Florida’s surprising 27-16 loss to Kentucky for sophomore RB Adarius Lemons to announce his intention to transfer from the program.

Lemons tweeted this just moments after head coach Dan Mullen’s postgame press conference:

Lemons was suspended for the season opener, but was Florida’s primary returnman in the Kentucky game. Lemons returned two kicks for a total of 47 yards on Saturday.

Lemons had fallen behind Jordan Scarlett, Lamical Perine, and classmate Malik Davis on the Florida depth chart.

Florida will face Colorado State on Sept. 15 at 4:00 PM.

  • FB: Kentucky runs wild in victory over #25 Gators

    FINAL: Kentucky 27, Florida 16

    1st Quarter: Gators 0 Wildcats 7

Gainesville, FL- The Gators opened their SEC Schedule tonight against a Kentucky Wildcats team that they have beaten 31 consecutive times. Only, this isn’t the same Kentucky team that has lost 31 years running. This was a team that was determined to get that monkey off of their backs.
Florida had possession to begin and found mixed success in their opening drive but ultimately were forced to punt. Kentucky’s opening possession was a picture of efficiency. Led by the rushing attack of Benny Snell Jr., the Wildcats found paydirt on a 29 yard completion from Terry Wilson to David Bouvier.
For a young quarterback making his first trip to the Swamp, Wilson showed significant poise despite turning the ball over a couple of times in the first half.

    Passing Leaders

    Florida

    Feleipe Franks: 17/38, 232 YD 2 TD 1 INT

    Kentucky

    Terry Wilson: 11/16, 151 YD 2 TD 1 INT

    2nd Quarter: Gators 10 Wildcats 0
After giving up the early lead, Florida bounced back to put up some points of their own. Nothing came easily to the Gators though as they seemed to struggle to find a rhythm for most of the game. The flashes that were shown, would propel the offense just enough to make plays when they needed to.
After putting together a promising string of plays on the last possession of the first quarter, the Gators capped off the drive with a 29 yard Evan McPherson field goal. The next two Wildcat drives showed promise but ultimately were killed by a fumble and and interception, respectively.
The next scoring drive for the Gators seemed to be sparked by Kadarius Toney. Twice tonight, we saw the 1-2 combination of a pass completed to Toney followed by a direct snap to Toney. Both times, the combo of plays by the electric playmaker were successful.
It was the first time that this package was used that set up an 18 yard touchdown pass from Feleipe Franks to Moral Stephens. It is worth noting that on the season, Florida has 7 passing touchdowns and just 1 on the ground. This is a little concerning given the wealth of talent in their backfield.

    Receiving Leaders

    Florida

Kadarius Toney: 2 REC, 35 YD

Freddie Swain: 3 REC, 30 YD 1 TD

Moral Stephens: 1 REC, 18 YD 1 TD

    Kentucky

Lynn Bowden Jr.: 4 REC, 79 YD 1 TD

David Bouvier: 2 REC, 43 YD 1 TD

    3rd Quarter: Gators 0 Wildcats 14
The Gators front seven were on their heels for most of the night as Kentucky chewed up yardage and won the battle in the trenches. For the second week in a row, the Florida defense gave up an enormous amount of rushing yardage. Kentucky would have two rushers reach 100+ on their way to 303 yards rushing as a team.
After a long opening drive, the Cats regained the lead when Terry Wilson took a designed run 24 yards for a score. Wilson was efficient in the passing game and racked up 105 yards on the ground as well.
For all of the talented running backs that Florida has, it is a problem that Feleipe Franks was the leading rusher both in touches and in total yards. For Florida’s offense to work, they need to open up the play action on the backs of Scarlett, Davis, and Perine.
With the third quarter winding down, Wilson and the Wildcats found themselves in a third and sixteen situation. The Wildcats offense was unphased as Wilson connected with Bowden Jr. for a 54 yard touchdown that left the Gators reeling.

    Rushing Leaders

    Florida

Feleipe Franks: 11 CAR, 44 YD 4.0 AVG

Lamical Perine: 4 CAR, 34 YD 8.5 AVG

Jordan Scarlett: 7 CAR, 25 YD 3.6 AVG

    Kentucky

Benny Snell Jr: 27 CAR, 175 YD 6.5 AVG

Terry Wilson: 10 CAR, 105 YD 10.5 AVG 1 TD

    4th Quarter: Gators 6 Wildcats 6
With their backs against the wall, Florida would attempt to rally in the fourth quarter for the second year in a row. The comeback was dealt a significant blow when Evan McPherson missed a field goal attempt on what would be a very controversial call. The ball appeared to hook inside the uprights but the officials called the kick no good.
After a defensive stop, the offense went back to work. Franks would lead the offense 99 yards for a touchdown with just 3:34 left in regulation. Freddie Swain hauled in the 4 yard touchdown to put Florida within striking distance. Mullen opted to go for the 2-point conversion and Franks had Malik Davis wide open but chose to go to the opposite side of the field instead, throwing incomplete into tight coverage.
Once again, the defense held to give one final chance. But alas, every streak must come to an end. With a final play, Franks dropped back to pass but was hit from behind as he was throwing. The ball came loose and, at first, appeared to be an incomplete pass but was ruled and confirmed to be a fumble. Kentucky scooped it up, returned it to the 1-yard line, and nearly handed it to an official before realizing the play wasn’t dead and scoring a touchdown as time expired.
With the game in the books, it is clear that the Gators still have much to learn about what it takes to be a championship caliber team.

It has been 31 years since the Gators have been defeated by the Kentucky Wildcats. This is a familiar storyline whenever these teams face each other with only the number of years in the streak and the names on the rosters, changing. On Saturday night, the Gators will look to continue the longest winning streak (versus a single opponent) in the nation, extending it to 32.

Despite the narrative, Florida head coach Dan Mullen isn’t concerned about the streak. When asked if it plays into the preparation, he said, “I don’t know what that has to do with the game this week. You know, our guys didn’t have a whole lot to do with that and neither did the guys on their team. So, it is what it is.”

Instead, Mullen is driven to win because winning is the goal each week and he has impressed that upon the team during his short tenure as the Gators head coach. The focus of practice this week has been honing in on what the Gators did right and correcting what they did wrong -limited as that list may be – in the season opener last week.

    At a glance:

    Kentucky Wildcats

    Lexington, KY

    Enrollment: 22,621

    2018 record: 1-0

    Head Coach: Mark Stoops

While Florida made easy work out of their FCS opponent last week, the level of competition will drastically improve this weekend. The Gators defense will be tasked with containing one of the top running backs in the nation, in Benny Snell, Jr. Add to that an up and coming A.J. Rose and a dual threat quarterback, Terry Wilson.

While Snell and Rose were superb in Kentucky’s 35-20 victory over Central Michigan last weekend, Wilson struggled to find his rythym for much of his debut. The 6’3″ 205-pound QB will be baptised in the fire this weekend as he makes his first career start on the road in one of college football’s most hostile environments.

Three out of the last four meetings between these schools have been decided by a touchdown or less but the last time Kentucky came to the Swamp, they suffered a 45-7 beatdown. With Mullen at the helm of this program, Kentucky’s window to break the streak has nearly closed.

Florida managed to hold Snell to a mere 59 yards last season as Kentucky very nearly ended the streak but eventually fell 28-27. They will need to do more of the same while at the same time, not allowing Wilson or Rose to run wild in order to stop Kentucky’s upset bid this year.

In last week’s game, Snell and Rose each rushed for over 100 yards. Snell totaled 125 yards on 20 attempts with a pair of touchdowns. Meanwhile, A.J. Rose also found the endzone twice and ate up 104 yards on just 8 carries.

Wilson, for his part, went 11/18 for 78 yards with a couple of picks while also rushing 9 times for 38 yards. At times, he seemed like a deer in the headlights, scrambling around in the face of pressure and making poor decisions with the football. With Florida’s defensive front providing a heavy rush against a pretty weak Kentucky offensive line, don’t expect Wilson to feel any more comfortable in the Swamp.

Much has been made by various members of the sports media about UF giving up 222 rushing yards to Charleston Southern and how that will translate against Kenucky’s ground attack. But let’s put this into context. 70 yards of the 222 allowed came on one play at the very end of the first half. Nearly all of the remaining yards were given up during mop up duty in the second half against Florida’s third and fourth string players.

On the reverse side of that point, Kentucky rushed for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Chippewahs. They will be facing a much better defense this week.

Turnovers will also be a deciding factor in Saturday’s game. Currently, their is a chasm between these teams in terms of +/- turnover margin. Kentucky turned the ball over 4 times last week while Florida came away with 0 turnovers and 3 take aways.

The bottom line is this. Florida will have a massive home field advantage in front of a frenzied crowd at the Swamp. The Gators aggressive defense will be more than Wilson and the Wildcats will be able to overcome. The offense will be efficient and productive as they attempt to build on last week’s performance.

Currently, #25 Florida is a 15 point favorite over Kentucky. The game will be live from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium with coverage beginning at 7:00 PM on the SEC Network. Live game threads will be presented by ChompTalk.com on Facebook and on Twitter.

Photo by Don Callahan / Inside Carolina, 247Sports

Four star OT William Harrod announced his commitment to the Florida Gators via Twitter on Monday afternoon. The news comes on the heels of Harrod’s visit to Gainesville for the season opening win over Charleston Southern University this weekend.

“I really loved it,” the 6’5″ 315-pound lineman said of his UF visit. “I like it here. Great atmosphere. I really love the Florida Gators.

“I know [Dan Mullen] is a great coach and I know he actually knows what he’s doing. That’s what I want to play for, so it’s a great impression.”

John Hevesy has been Harrod’s primary recruiter and spent a great deal of time with the Fort Washington, Maryland native.

“Great coach, he’s straightforward, no sugar coating, none of that,” Harrod said. “That’s the kind of coach I would really like to play for. He really has a bond with his O-line. We watched some film and he taught me some stuff that will come in handy for my next game. Technique, mostly. You don’t have to destroy your guy on the field, but if you have technique and fundamentals that’s my main thing.”

Harrod was the recipient of 32 offers and the Gators beat out schools like Michigan, Tennessee, Georgia, and FSU on the way to landing their fourth OL commitment in this cycle. With the pick-up, Florida now has 14 total commitments and jumped to No. 21 in the recruiting rankings (247Sports).

Harrod has a 247Sports composite rating of 0.90 with an overall ranking of 304, while being considered the No. 5 overall recruit in the state of Maryland and the No. 31 OT overall.

There was a special feeling in The Swamp on Saturday. The Gators put on a show against a significantly inferior opponent.

On Saturday, Florida will welcome Kentucky into Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The Gators have won thirty-one straight contests over their SEC rivals, and at least one Gators defender believes that streak will be extended.

Per Mark Long of the Associated Press, Florida junior DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson has guaranteed a victory over the Wildcats:

Both Florida and Kentucky sit at 1-0 after defeating non-conference opponents on opening weekend. The Gators dominated Charleston Southern (53-6) while the Wildcats defeated Central Michigan 35-20.

The Gators topped Kentucky 28-27 in September 2017, thanks to two plays which the Wildcats elected to not defend Florida receivers.

Gardner-Johnson was credited for five tackles (four solo) in the opener and has five career interceptions.

Florida and Kentucky will kick off at 7:30 PM on Saturday with the game televised on SEC Network.

  • VB: Gators go 2-1 in Bubly Invitational
    Photo via Chomp Talk

Florida volleyball is now 3-2 after hosting the Bubly Invitational in the Swamp. The University of Southern California, the University of Louisville, and the University of Central Florida joined the Gators in the meet. Florida topped Louisville and UCF, but came up short against No. 7 USC. Missed the meet? We’ve got you covered.

    USC

The most anticipated match of the meet was a battle between the No. 4 Gators and the No. 7 Trojans.

Florida dropped the first set to USC after falling behind 10-2 early on. In the next set, the Gators came back swinging, posting a .382 clip. The two teams went tit-for-tat in the third set, as the Trojans gained its second 10-2 lead over Florida of the night. Gator Macy Phillips served 2 clutch aces to help bring the team within 4 points, but after 7 Florida errors, the third set went to the Trojans. The Gators dropped the fourth set with a close 25-21 score.

USC’s Brooke Botkin recorded 20 kills on the night, contributing to the team’s big win. One of the most notable Gator stat lines of the night came from redshirt sophomore Holly Carlton. The University of North Carolina transfer made a career-high 16 kills. Sophomore Macy Phillips ended the night with a career-high three service aces. Junior Allie Gregory finished with a team-best 17 digs and redshirt senior Allie Monserez dished out a team-high 21 assists.

    Louisville

The Gators avenged the USC loss the next night with a win over the Louisville Cardinals.

Florida won in four sets (after dropping the second 25-23). The Cardinals were the first unranked opponent of the Gators’ season and the team showed out.

Senior Taelor Kellum recorded 10 kills and seven blocks behind an .833 hit clip. Freshman Thayer Hall and R-So. Holly Carlton posted 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

Florida made 10 blocks on the night, holding the Cardinals to a measly .203 hitting percentage.

Coach Mary Wise was pleased with the match against Louisville saying, “This is one of those wins that are going to help us down the road.”

    UCF

Florida closed out the Invitational with an in-state match against UCF. Similiarly to the win over the Cardinals, Florida won the match 3-1.

During this match, the Gators dropped the second set. But, the team managed to get themselves out of close calls in the first and third sets.

Florida dug itself out of two holes in different sets. The first set had UCF up 9-5, but the Gators won after managing to reach a 17-17 breakeven. In the third set, a 15-11 deficit turned to an 18-18 score, and eventually a win. Florida won the fourth set handily, with a 25-17 score.

Breakout freshman Thayer Hall had a stellar night on both sides of the court, going for 19 digs and 20 kills. Hall now has 87 kills through 5 games. Holly Carlton had another impressive night with 10 kills.

Freshman Lauren Dooley made her debut with the Gators and ended up being integral to the four-set win. Dooley’s stats included three blocks and a game-winning kill.

    What’s Next?

Following the match, Hall and Carlton were named to the All-Tournament team. USC had the most team selections behind Brooke Botkin, Khalia Lanier, and MVP Raquel Lazaro. UCF’s Kristina Fisher and Louisville’s Jasmine Bennett rounded out the group.

Next up, the Gators will travel to Flagstaff, Ariz. for the Lumberjack Invitational for a Thursday match against CSUN. Friday will bring a match against Northern Arizona before the team will finishes up against Southern Illinois on Saturday.

Gainesville, FL – The Dan Mullen era is off to a great start as the Gators bullied FCS foe, Charleston Southern in front of a frenzied home crowd. While Florida’s ability to win this game was never really in question, there were still plenty of questions to answer. Will the offense look anemic? Will it be fun? What will Feleipe Franks look like?

Well, it wasn’t, it was, and he looked very capable. Franks became the first Gators quarterback to throw 5 touchdowns in a single game since Chris Leak in 2004. Franks showed poise and confidence as he delivered strike after strike to a loaded receiving corps. The two transfers in that unit, each scored with Trevon Grimes receiving 1 TD and Van Jefferson hauling in a pair.
The biggest surprise may have been the amount of passing plays versus the number of rushing plays. But Mullen also surprised the fans with a throwback to what Gators football used to be. What it is supposed to be. We saw the return of the infamous “jump pass” and excellent special teams play including two blocked kicks. One of those was returned for the Gators final score of the night.

While this was a fun game for the Gators and their fans, the level of competition will take a massive step forward as the Gators open SEC play next weekend when Kentucky comes to town. Expect Mullen and the Gators to be focused and give relentless effort in preparation for this contest as it will be the first true test of who this team is. But for now, enjoy this win.
