• What Jud Fabian’s Return Means For Florida Baseball
Photo by Wesley Hitt | Getty Images

Gator baseball fans have been expecting and dreading the day Jud Fabian leaves campus since about 2019. Most of them would say at the beginning of 2021 he’s the first of the Gators gone in the MLB Draft.

Now, they have to wait another year longer.

The Gators center fielder declined to sign with the Boston Red Sox, who made him the 40th overall pick in the MLB Draft back in mid-July. This means the Gators get back a big bopper and one of its best (if not the best) defenders from last season; one with some added motivation to improve from last season.

Fabian was a projected first-rounder, even top five at one point, all of last season. But, as the season progressed and the strikeouts mounted, Fabian’s stock dipped. He displayed his power and incredible range in center field all year but it was the lack of consistency at the plate that got him.

    A tumultuous 2021

The now-fourth-year player struck out 79 times in 225 at-bats (that’s 35 percent). In Florida’s first series against Miami, Fabian went 1-for-13 with seven strikeouts in the series loss.

He worked his average up to .289 when the Texas A&M series ended. It fell all the way to .228 after Florida’s walk-off win against Florida State. He definitely caught fire after that as he hit .387 (19-for-49) with seven home runs, 15 RBIs and 16 runs scored between the Missouri and Kentucky series.

But the end of his “sophomore” campaign left much to be desired. He hit .174 (8-for-46) with only two home runs and almost double the strikeouts in his final 12 games. His final appearance of the year against South Alabama he finished 0-for-4 with three punch-outs.

For all the runs he didn’t drive in, he definitely saved a ton with his play in center field. Kevin O’Sullivan’s always praised Fabian for his glove. Sully called him one of the best center fielders he’s ever coached.

What does this mean for Florida?

Well, first of all, they now retain a key defender and two-thirds of last year’s outfield alongside Sterlin Thompson as Jacob Young signed with the Washington Nationals.

It also means the Gators return a big bat from the 2021 lineup. That now gives Florida, Fabian, Josh Rivera, Thompson, Kris Armstrong, Kendrick Calilao and Colby Halter with at least 35 games played plus over 100 at-bats. Not to mention catcher Mac Guscette who missed a lot of time with injury.

Fabian also has the opportunity to be on the same team as his younger brother Deric who signed with the Gators and was one of the best players in the state during the 2021 season.

After his slide in the draft due to some struggles in 2021, Fabian along with a host of other Gators will come out in 2022 with something to prove.

It’s Friday Night Lights at the University of Florida. The annual recruiting mega-event brings out many of the nation’s top high school prospects and usually results in several commitments to the Gators football program.

This year was no different as 4-star RB Terrance Gibbs committed to Dan Mullen’s team Friday evening, upon being offered.

Gibbs rushed for more than 2,500 yards and 38 touchdowns over his freshman and sophomore years in high school before tearing his ACL prior to his junior year.

Alabama, Florida State, and LSU are among the teams that have offered the Winter Park native.

The 6’0, 190 lb prospect is the No. 17 ranked RB in the 2022 class and the No. 24 ranked player in the state of Florida.

The Gators now have eleven commitments in the 2022 recruiting cycle and are No. 27 in 247’s team rankings.

Florida Gators shooting guard Scottie Lewis was selected with the No. 56 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft on Thursday by the Charlotte Hornets.

Lewis averaged 7.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 21 games in 2020-21. Lewis was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection following the 2019-20 season and is known for his defensive acumen. In 51 career appearances with UF, he accumulated 69 steals and 58 blocked shots.

The New Jersey native is the second Gator to be selected in this year’s draft as point guard Tre Mann was taken by Oklahoma City with the 18th pick overall.

This is the first time since 2011 that multiple Gators were selected in a draft. In that draft, Chandler Parsons and Vernon Macklin both heard their names called.

Florida Gators point guard Tre Mann was selected with the No. 18 pick of the 2021 NBA Draft on Thursday. Mann will be heading to Oklahoma City, barring a trade.

Mann’s selection ends a seven year drought for the University of Florida, and an eight year drought since a first round choice was produced.

Mann averaged 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game in 2020-21. Mann saw significant development in every aspect of his game with the departure of Andrew Nembhard to Gonzaga.

Mann played point guard for the Gators but he is likely to take on a combo guard role with an NBA team.

  • Gators Picked to Finish No. 2 in East by Media

Georgia picked to finish first, by wide margin

SEC Media Days has come to a close after five days of coaches and athletes being bombarded with questions from various media outlets across the southeast. With the end of the week comes votes for SEC preseason rankings as well as the All-SEC Team selections.

The Florida Gators did not receive a lot of love from voters and fell far behind in the polls to UGA. The Bulldogs were selected to win the East with 923 points and 124 first-place votes while Florida only received seven votes to win the division and 784 points.

Kentucky was selected third with two votes to win the division and 624 points.

Of course, standing at the top of the list is the inevitable Alabama Crimson Tide who received an unsurprising 130 votes to win the western division and 84 votes to win the conference championship in Atlanta. Although the Bulldogs are favorites the East, they fell far behind in second place with 45 votes to win the league title.

Four Gators were voted on the list of preseason All-SEC Teams with defensive lineman Zachary Carter and defensive back Kaiir Elam leading the way on the Defensive First-Team. Carter tied for his spot with Texas A&M lineman DeMarvin Leal. Linebacker Ventrell Miller, who also attended the SEC Media week, was voted to the Second-Team.

The only player on the Gators offense to get voted to the All-SEC list is wide receiver Jacob Copeland who was voted to the Third-Team with Texas A&M’s Ainias Smith.

Once again, Alabama led the way on player voted to the preseason All-SEC Team with 16 athletes voted in and eight Crimson Tide members on the First-Team.

Now that the busy week is over and votes were accounted for, the teams can return home from the endless questions, the Gators will prepare for kickoff of week one against the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sept. 4.

  • Gators 2021 soccer schedule brings many challenges

Florida set to face many tests with new head coach

Photo by Benjamin Fox | ChompTalk.com

With first year head coach Tony Amato at the helm, the Florida Gators soccer program is ready to hit the field after releasing the details for the 2021 regular season schedule. The opponents are no joke , in fact , six of the UF foes participated in the second round of the NCAA tournament last season.

Florida kicks off 2021 with a preseason exhibition at a neutral field in Orange Beach, Alabama against Southern Mississippi on Aug. 12 then continues the road trip to Tampa, Florida to visit the AAC champion South Florida Bulls on Aug. 19 for the first regular season match.

The end of August doesn’t slow down for Florida as they begin a three-match stance at the Swamp with a showdown against the Texas Longhorns on Aug 22. Orlando’s hometown team, the UCF Knights then pay a visit to Gainesville on Aug. 26 followed by the Miami Hurricanes three days after.

UF will hit the road again but don’t have to travel very far to invade Tallahassee and challenge the NCAA runner-up Florida State Seminoles on Sept. 2. Last season, the arch rivals came to 0-0 draw in an exhibition match.

The Gators will board the bus and take the I-75 down to Ft. Myers, Florida to face Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 5.

Finally the conference play begins on Sept. 17 with another road trip to Nashville, Tennessee to try and take down the defending SEC tournament champion Vanderbilt Commodores who went 9-6-1 last year and don’t intend to stop the momentum.

Florida returns home on Sept. 23 to continue the SEC rivalry with the Kentucky Wildcats.

Unfortunately, the hometown fun stops there as the Gators board the buses once again to leave Gainesville and tour through the Magnolia State. The road trips goes to Starkville when UF challenges Mississippi State on Sept. 26 and then they’ll return home for a Oct. 3 matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.

The Gators travel back-and-forth once again on Oct. 7 to Knoxville, Tennessee for a rivalry match against the Volunteers before a home matchup against the Missouri Tigers on Oct. 10.

Then for the season finales, UF sets their anchor at the Diz for two matches against the LSU Tigers on Oct. 24 followed by the South Carolina Gamecocks four days later. Florida will seek out revenge against the Gamecocks after 2-4 loss in the previous season.

All Florida Gators fans are welcome to Donald R. Dizney Stadium this season at full capacity and admission is free.

Photo from 247Sports via Clemson Athletics

Florida head coach Dan Mullen revealed on Monday that transfer RB Demarkcus Bowman will be granted immediate eligibility for the 2021 season. Mullen made the announcement during SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama.

Bowman announced his decision to transfer to Florida in October after appearing in two games for the Clemson Tigers. In those two contests, the Lakeland, FL native rushed for 32 yards on nine carries.

Bowman was a five-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting cycle after rushing for more than 5,000 yards and 71 touchdowns in his high school career.

Bowman joins an experienced and deep offensive backfield that returns the top three rushers from a season ago (Damien Pierce, Malik Davis, Nay’Quan Wright) and includes former 5-star transfer Lorenzo Lingard (Miami).

Florida opens the season on September 4 against Florida Atlantic.

  • WBB: Cameron Newbauer Steps Down as Head Coach

Photo by Brian Fox | ChompTalk.com

The Florida women’s basketball program will be looking for a new head coach after the resignation of Cameron Newbauer, the university announced in a release on Friday.

Newbauer was the leader of the program for the last four seasons and agreed to a contract extension that the UAA announced just six weeks ago.

“Being the head coach of the University of Florida has been the honor of a lifetime. After much reflection, my family and I have come to the difficult decision to step away,” Newbauer said.

Newbauer was 46-71 overall, but the team has seen significant improvement over his tenure and earned a WNIT bid last season, before dropping a second round contest against Villanova.

Associate head coach Kelly Rae Finley has been named the interim head coach and athletic director Scott Stricklin has stated that the search for a new coach will begin after the season.

“During Kelly’s four years here at Florida, she’s been well-respected within the women’s basketball program and throughout the UAA and we’re fortunate to have her step in and lead our young women,” said Stricklin.

Additionally, as reported first by thenexthoops.com, star guard Lavender Briggs has entered the transfer portal.

Briggs, a second team All-SEC selection, averaged 19.4 points per game last year.

More to come as the story continues to develop.
