• 4-Star DB Brad Stewart is second commit of night for Florida

The Florida Gators defense will be losing a lot of key players in 2017.  No longer will Jalen Tabor and Quincey Wilson patrol the defensive backfield as they have both opted to jump to the NFL after successful college careers.  This is one reason that Florida has been considered DBU by the media.

On Saturday night, Jim McElwain tweeted his recruiting hashtag, “Chomp Chomp” with a X2, indicating a second commitment.  Four-star cornerback Brad Stewart announced via Twitter his commitment to the Florida Gators.

Stewart is a 6 foot, 194 pound cornerback from New Orleans.  Stewart has been on campus for his official visit this weekend.  His primary recruiters have been Tim Skipper and Torrian Gray.  Stewart also had offers from most of the major programs in the country, including the local LSU Tigers.  Alabama, Texas, Auburn, Miami, Michigan, USC, and Penn State are just a few of the school to offer Stewart a scholarship.

Stewart is the second commitment Florida received tonight as LB Nick Smith committed just hours earlier.

  • 3-Star LB Nick Smith commits to Florida

Florida head coach Jim McElwain has made the linebacker position a priority in the 2017 recruiting cycle.  Florida has already welcomed James Houston from Plantation, FL on campus as an early enrollee and also has a verbal commitment from  Ventrell Miller of Lakeland, FL at the linebacker position.

On Saturday night, three-star linebacker Nick Smith announced his commitment to Florida.  Smith was originally committed to North Carolina State, but backed off on January 15.  Smith took his official visit to Florida on January 20.  Florida was seen as the leader for the Orlando prospect.

Smith is 6-3 and 205 lbs and had offers from other schools such as Oregon, Nebraska, Michigan State, and Arizona.  Smith is listed by 247 sports as the 82nd ranked OLB in the 2017 class and the 161st ranked player in Florida.

    FLORIDA 43 41 X 84

NORMAN, OK-  Florida entered the Big 12/SEC Challenge with a tough road test against Oklahoma.  The Gators were coming off a 35-point victory at LSU, but needed to follow that win up with another important victory.  The Gators used a career day from Kevarrius Hayes to defeat the Sooners.  Hayes scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a reserve role for Florida.  The 20 points represent a career high for Hayes. Florida also played terrific defense, as Oklahoma only made 27.7 % of their field goal attempts, including shooting 1-16 from the three point line.

Canyon Barry scored 15 points, 13 of which were scored in the first half.  Devin Robinson added 13 and Kasey Hill chipped in 12 points for the Gators.  Hill also assisted on eight baskets.

The Sooners were led by Rashard Odomes who scored 13 points.  Kameron McGusty was the only other Sooner in double-digis with 10 points.

Florida is now 16-5 with two strong road victories in their last two contests.  Florida will return to Gainesville on Thursday to face Missouri before a Saturday Showdown with Kentucky.  Oklahoma falls to 8-12 on the season.

  • Gator fans: Stop embarrassing us!

Gainesville is notorious for being hostile territory if you side with the enemy. The Swamp is one of the loudest stadiums in the country and one of the toughest venues in all of college athletics.

Florida fans are extremely proud of this reputation, but in the age of social media a new word can represent a fraction of the Florida faithful. Embarrassing.

Let me start by saying that I do understand that only a tiny portion of the Gators fan base is embarrassing. The vast majority of Florida fans are quite the opposite. If you haven’t done anything to embarrass yourself or your fellow fans, then clearly I’m not talking about you.

However, several Florida fans openly called out an 18 year old high school student last night who made a decision that will impact the rest of his life.  These Gators fans were unhappy and let it be known when Elijah Blades announced his decommitment from UF

Blades tweeted that at 9:00 PM EST and it didn’t take long for Florida fans to take notice.  Blades also sent out another tweet at 12:46 AM expressing the “hate” he had received since his announcement.

Blades received a lot of “hate” from Florida fans. Here is a small sampling of what Gator fans had to say with just a bit of commentary from my view.

#1 a verbal commitment is non-binding and all coaches know this.

#2 we’ve seen the national attention to coaches pulling scholarships, so if a coach can pull a scholarship, why can’t a player change his mind before he’s signed his letter of intent?

While we are talking about keeping it classy, maybe name calling isn’t the best bet.

Lie isn’t exactly the right word. He told us he was committed to Florida, but things change. It happens every year. At least he let us know before signing day unlike Shavar Manuel in 2016.

Actually, Florida was not the first to offer Blades a scholarship. Utah and Arizona appear to have both offered Blades before Florida.

Oh, and a scholarship offer doesn’t make someone relevant. He earned his relevance by hard work and his talents on the field.

Look, we all agree (or believe) Florida is DBU. But that doesn’t mean that if he goes to Nebraska or USC that he won’t go in the first round. It’s unfair to say that. It will be entirely up to how he plays, no matter where he goes.

Blades used the wrong “there” in his decommitment tweet. So what?  If he was announcing his decommitment from Georgia and Florida was in the running for his services, no Gator fan would care.

This wasn’t aimed at Blades, was more directed at the Florida coaching staff and the perceived poor recruiting. However, this was sent directly to Blades, so it counts.

The only issue with this is tweet is that it was sent to Blades with the profile name Fire McElwain. If Blades is committing to Florida, he will be committing to Coach Mac. If Florida fans want Mac to be fired, why would he want to come here for this coach?

    And finally…

Not much else needs to be said about this one…

    _____________________________

In December 2015, Under Armour did a poll amongst their high school All-American’s to find out which college fan base has the most annoying fans. Not surprisingly, Florida finished first.

Fans that get on social media and mock athletes for making decisions that will affect their future are the worst kind. It’s the choice of the student athlete as to where they want to attend, and that choice can be influenced by any number of things.

What makes this worse: Blades said that Florida was still in the running for him. I can’t speak for him, but if I look at my timeline and see the “hate” he has, Florida would probably fall off that list.

Gator Nation, when it comes to recruiting, stay off of social media. Let the student-athletes make their own decisions. Let the coaching staff do their jobs and try to convince these individuals that Florida is the place for them. It’s not our job to recruit these guys as fans.

I know this happens everywhere, but don’t let that be an excuse.

Gator Nation, we can do better than that.

  • #25 Florida gets much needed rout of LSU

    FINAL: FLORIDA 106, LSU 71

      1st 2nd OT FINAL
    FLORIDA 58 48 X 106
    LSU 33 38 X 71

BATON ROUGE, LA-  The Florida Gators men’s basketball team needed this.  Florida came into Baton Rouge after two ugly losses including a home loss to a double-digit underdog in Vanderbilt on Saturday.  Florida rebounded in a big way.  The Gators shot a sizzling 56% from the field and 58% from behind the 3-point line.  Florida made a program record 19 three-pointers on Wednesday night.  Florida defended the three-point line much better than they did against Vanderbilt, allowing LSU to make only two of seventeen attempts.

The Gators entered the game at a crossroads.  Last season the Gators fell apart as the NCAA tournament neared and ended up completely missing the tournament.  Florida appeared poised to make the same mistake this year, but the Gators overcame a tough road environment in an arena they hadn’t won at since 2011 to earn the victory.

Devin Robinson led Florida with a career high 24 points and 8 rebounds.  Robinson made 9 of his 15 field goal attempts and shot 5-8 from three.  Freshman Eric Hester scored 16 points off the bench, making all five of his shots (all three-pointers).  Justin Leon scored 15 points in 19 minutes of action.

The Tigers were led by Duop Reath with 15 points.  Skylar Mays (13) and Wayde Sims (12) also scored in double figures for LSU.

Florida improves to 15-5 and 6-2 in SEC play.  LSU falls to 9-10 and 1-7 in the SEC.

  • 4-star DB Blades decommits from Florida

At 9:00 PM EST Florida commit and 4-star DB Elijah Blades announced his decommitment from the University of Florida.

Blades tweeted a screenshot of a note he wrote to announce the decommitment (pictured below).

“First off I want to say thank you to the University of Florida and the staff for giving me a chance to play at there school but I would like to reopen my recruitment up and think about what’s the best decision for me. Florida is still in it. Coming down to signing day.”

Blades then tweeted a picture of his top 5 schools. Florida is among the group with Southern Cal, Oregon,  Nebraska, and Georgia.

Blades is from Southern California, but Nebraska appears to be the new favorite. Follow The Gator Chomp Blog on signing day for all the latest.

  • Three Gators named to preseason All-SEC softball team

Florida softball players Delaney Gourley, Kayli Kvistad, and Amanda Lorenz were named to the preseason All-SEC team. All three were named All-Americans in 2016.

Senior pitcher Delaney Gourley went 19-4 in 35 appearances for Florida in 2016. Gourley posted a 0.80 ERA and helped lead the Gators to the lowest ERA in the country at 0.93. Gourley also struck out 224 batters in 157 innings pitched.

Junior infielder Kayli Kvistad hit .370 in 61 games. Kvistad was a regular in the middle of the Florida lineup and led the Gators with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs.

Sophomore outfielder Amanda Lorenz led the Gators with a .403 average as a freshman. Lorenz added 8 home runs and 48 RBIs while batting third in the Florida lineup for much of 2016.

  • McElwain promises SEC Championship in third year

It has been well documented that Florida has struggled in the 2017 recruiting cycle.  Florida has at least a dozen visitors on official visits this weekend, and they were in attendance for Florida’s men’s basketball game against Vanderbilt.

Head coach Jim McElwain came out to midcourt and made the following proclamation:

“I’ll tell you something…what a great crowd, it’s because of the energy every day that we were able to go undefeated in the Swamp and able to go to Atlanta back to back years.”

“And because of you guys, when we get back to Atlanta next season, we’re going to kick the door down!  Thank you for all you do! Chomp, Chomp!”

McElwain’s Gators have played Alabama in the last two SEC Championship games, both resulted in one-sided Crimson Tide victories.

Florida is looking to finish strong with the 2017 recruiting cycle.  National Signing Day is February 1.  Florida has this weekend and next weekend to lock up commitments, and make an impression on recruits.

Florida has a tough schedule in 2017, but the toughest games are home games.  Florida will play Tennessee, LSU, Texas A&M, and Florida State at home.  Florida also plays neutral site games against Michigan (in Dallas) and Georgia (in Jacksonville).

  • #19 Florida loses ugly game at #24 South Carolina

FINAL: SOUTH CAROLINA 57, FLORIDA 53

      1st 2nd OT FINAL
    FLORIDA 28 25 X 53
    S. CAROLINA 21 36 X 57

COLUMBIA, SC-  South Carolina defeated the Florida Gators on Wednesday night in what was easily the ugliest game Florida has played this year.  Florida shot 0-17 from behind the three-point arc and made just 15 of their 28 free throw attempts in the loss.  Kasey Hill was the lone Gator to foul out, but three other players had four fouls each.  Hill sat out much of the second half with four fouls, but came back in for the stretch run before contesting a late shot clock three point attempt with 1:57 left in the game and making contact with PJ Dozier.  It was a terrible foul by a veteran player.  Florida’s offense never got into a rhythm thanks to South Carolina’s tough defense, and the constant whistle being blown by the referees.  The officials called 55 fouls (to be fair it was on both teams as Florida was actually charged one less foul than the Gamecocks) to ensure the game had no flow.  Despite the officiating, the Gators did little to help their effort.  Florida didn’t make their first basket of the second half until almost nine minutes of game time had expired.

Canyon Barry led Florida with 13 points while shooting 4-13 and 0-6 from the three point line.  Kasey Hill added 11 points (all in the first half) and played an important role in the Gators leading at halftime.  Devin Robinson scored eight points and contributed 10 rebounds.

South Carolina was led by Sindarius Thornwell with 20 points while Chris Silva (11) and PJ Dozier (10) also scored in double digits.

Florida falls to 5-1 in SEC play.  South Carolina remains undefeated at 6-0 and in a tie atop the SEC with Kentucky.
