  • FINAL: FLORIDA 40, MISSOURI 14

GAINESVILL, FL-  In 2014 the Missouri Tigers came to Gainesville and destroyed the Gators on homecoming.  The final score was 42-13, and Missouri scored touchdowns on an interception return, a fumble return, a kickoff return, and a punt return.  The game seemed to be the last straw as head coach Will Muschamp would be fired after the season.
Fast forward to 2016: Homecoming in the Swamp showed off Florida’s vaunted defense.  The Gators scored two defensive touchdowns as Jalen “Teez” Tabor and Quincy Wilson both jumped plays and returned the interceptions for scores.

Florida’s offense, while piling up solid numbers, looked shaky at best.  QB Luke Del Rio threw three interceptions and the offense committed eight false start penalties.  Too often drives would end after entering Missouri territory.

Though the offense largely struggled, there were bright spots.  Florida averaged 7.4 yards per carry over 39 rushing attempts.  Lamical Perine and Jordan Scarlett rushed for more than 100 yards.  Tyrie Cleveland caught three passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Florida’s defense was again fantastic.  The Gators held Missouri to 98 yards passing.  Missouri failed to convert a first down until the final minute of the first half.  Missouri rushed for 265 yards, but most of that came in the final quarter, with the game out of hand.

The win for Florida, coupled with a Tennessee loss, puts the Gators in the driver’s seat for the remainder of the SEC schedule.

    FLORIDA GATORS VS GEORGIA BULLDOGS

    OCTOBER 29, 2016 at 3:30 PM

    EVERBANK STADIUM, JACKSONVILLE, FL

  • Multiple sources are claiming that Florida football will in fact play against LSU this season.

According to the SEC, Florida will play at LSU on November 19, 2016. Florida will forfeit two home games this season (including the originally scheduled Presbyterian game), but the Gators will play against LSU at home in 2017 and 2018.

Gators head coach Jim McElwain told reporters on Wednesday that reports of UF not wanting to play LSU were erroneous and stated that the Gators will play “anyone, anywhere.”

LSU was consistent in guaranteeing they would not lose a home game on November 19. Florida has announced that the game will start no later than 3:30 PM.

“The conference office asked us to find a solution in working with LSU, yet LSU was never a true partner in our discussions.”–Jeremy Foley

  • ESPN is reporting that LSU has refused to buy out their home game against South Alabama on November 19 to play at Florida.

According to the report, Florida offered the date with the intention to buy out their opponent, Presbyterian College.

Florida outgoing Athletic Director said that Florida would pay about $500,000 to buy out their game. LSU would have to pay South Alabama almost $1.5 million according to LSU beat reporter Ross Dellenger.

According to Zach Abolverdi of SEC Country, the SEC’s lost-revenue insurance policy would cover any losses by LSU cancelling the home date with South Alabama.

LSU did offer Florida an opportunity to play Saturday’s game on either Saturday or Sunday at LSU or in New Orleans.

  • GAINESVILLE, FL-  As you’ve probably heard by now, the Florida Gators football game against LSU has been postponed indefinitely.

Florida’s outgoing Athletic Director Jeremy Foley stated that UF is 100% open to any scenario that allows the game to be played at a later date.  Foley stated that EMS and security is being deployed, rightfully so, to other parts of Florida, making the game impossible to play.

Florida is taking a lot of criticism for their handling of the situation through various social media platforms, and it’s still not clear why Florida and the SEC delayed the announcement to Thursday evening, less than 48 hours from kickoff. What is clear, is that all involved (finally) made the right choice.

Eighty three players on the Florida football roster are from the state of Florida. Most of these players families live in Florida. Their minds will be elsewhere with the possible destruction that could take place with a major hurricane landing in Florida.

Was Florida offered the opportunity to play in Baton Rouge by the LSU administration?  Probably. It sure seems so. Even Foley didn’t deny that. But why would Florida take that offer?  The fact is the Gainesville economy would take a hit of several hundreds of thousands of dollars by missing a home game.

Also, this is Florida’s biggest draw for recruiting this season. This was the Gators opportunity to show many recruits the campus and allow them to take in the atmosphere at “the Swamp.” If you take this game out of Gainesville, Florida loses the official visit of all those recruits.

Will Florida and LSU play on November 19th like everyone seems to want?  The Gators are currently scheduled to play Presbyterian College and LSU is scheduled to play South Alabama. According to Foley, Florida would pay Presbyterian about $500,000 for a bit out and according to LSU beat reporter Ross Dellenger, LSU would pay $1.5 million to buy out South Alabama.

In conclusion, Florida and the SEC came to the right conclusion. It’s a shame it took as long as it did, but the right decision has been made.

Florida will face the Missouri Tigers on Saturday, October 15 at 4:00 PM for homecoming weekend.

  • The New York Mets announced Tuesday that Tim Tebow will report to Scottsdale and play with the Mets’ Arizona Fall League team. Tebow will be managed by Mets first base coach Tom Goodwin.

Tebow hit .286 with a home run and two walks in three games with the Mets Instructional League team in Port St. Lucie, FL.

The Arizona Fall League is known to have top level and elite prospects, unlike the instructional leagues. Tebow will be facing pitchers with much higher ceilings and likely candidates for major league rosters as soon as next season.

Keep posted with The Gator Chomp Blog for more on Time Tebow as he attempts to ascend to the MLB.
