Townsend was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award last season and was named a semifinalist for William V. Campbell Award. The Campbell Trophy is presented to the athlete that best combines academics, community service, and on-field performance.  It is considered the “Academic” Heisman Trophy.

  • Florida sophomore Melanie Monteagudo was named the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week for week seven.

Monteagudo contributed on two goals in Florida’s 3-0 win at LSU. Monteagudo scored on a volley in the tenth minute and assisted on Julie Lester‘s score in the 89th minute. This was Monteagudo’s first assist of 2016.

Monteagudo is second on the Gators with five goals this season and has 11 points (good for third on the team).

  • The Gators ace is expected to be ready for the season opener.

GAINESVILLE, FL-  Baseball America is reporting that Florida ace Alex Faedo underwent arthoscopic surgery on both of his knees in early September.

Though Faedo will not participate in Florida’s fall program, he is expected to be recovered in time for the Gators season opener in February.  Baseball America also indicated that Faedo was up and walking without crutches.

The 6-5 220 LB Faedo is expected to be the Gators ace this season. He was 13-3 with a 3.18 ERA in 104.2 innings last season. More impressive was his line of 133 strikeouts to 21 walks. Faedo is expected to be a first round pick in the 2017 MLB draft.

Faedo participated with the USA Baseball collegiate team in the summer and posted a 3-0 record and a .056 ERA.

  • GAINESVILLE, FL-  After many Gators baseball fans feared manager Kevin O’Sullivan would leave Florida for Texas after last season, UF knew they had to act to keep their manager. First came the announcement of facility upgrades, and now it has been reported that O’Sullivan has signed a 10-year extension worth $12.5 million.

Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball and Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald were the first to report the new extension.

The extension makes “Sully” the best paid coach in college baseball, and should ease fans’ minds that he may end up leaving. O’Sullivan was mentioned as a candidate for the Clemson (his alma mater) after the 2015 season, and the Texas job after 2016. Texas is considered the preeminent job in college baseball due to an enormous budget and incredible facilities.

O’Sullivan has led the Gators to a 396-189 record in his ten seasons at the helm. Florida has made the postseason in each season and been to five College World Series’ with O’Sullivan.

  • Florida head coach Jim McElwain said that Gators WR Brandon Powell will not be suspended for the first half of the upcoming game at Vanderbilt.
Powell was ejected against Tennessee after Volunteers defensive back Rashaan Gaulden flopped, baiting the refs into the call.

McElwain said the SEC reviewed the call and that Powell “was full go from Monday on.”

The SEC has implemented a rule that states any player that receives an ejection for personal fouls must be suspended for the first half of the following game. Each case can be overruled if the penalty is deemed to be unfair.

This is the second time a Florida player has escaped a first half suspension after an ejection.  OL Martez Ivey was not suspended for his role in being ejected against North Texas.

  • GLENVIEW, IL-  The Florida Gators men’s golf team has earned it’s first victory of 2016. The Gators competed in the Windon Memorial Classic and  was the only team to shoot under par for the weekend.
Three Gators finished in the top ten overall among individuals.  Sophomore Gordon Neale finished four-under for the tournament to lead the Gators and placing second overall.

Freshman Andy Zhang competed in his first collegiate tournament and finished sixth overall and second amongst Gator golfers with a 3-under par score.

The Gators shot a six-under 282 as a team on Saturday and followed that up with a 2-under performance on Sunday. On Monday, Florida shot five-over in part due to thirty mile an hour winds

    Gator Results:

    • Neale:         T2 / -4
    • Zhang:        6 / -3
    • Celano:       T8 / +1
