• Rio De Janeiro, Brazil-  According to multiple media outlets, former Gator and current USA swimmer Ryan Lochte was held up at gunpoint in Rio.

    Lochte was invited to a party by Brazilian Thiago Pereria. Lochte and an American teammate took a cab to the party, but when the cab stopped for gas they were held up at knife and gunpoint. Lochte’s mother said to USA Today that his wallet was taken.

    Reports are that Lochte is now safe at the Team USA swimming base.

    Lochte won gold in the 4X200M Freestyle relay in these Olympic games and is the most decorated Gator in Olympic history.

  • Tampa-  The Florida Gators soccer team played at South Florida’s Corbett Stadium in front of more than 1,400 fans for their final preseason tune up.  The Gators defeated the USF Bulls 2-1 behind goals from junior Gabby Seiler and sophomore Samantha Chung.

    The Gators outshot USF 16-5. Seiler scored in the 33rd minute to give UF a 1-0 lead. The lead would last until the 60th minute when Chung capitalized and doubled the Gators’ advantage.

    USF got their lone goal from freshman Evelyne Vines in the 71st minute.

    The Gators open the regular season this weekend. Iowa State will visit Gainesville on Friday at 7PM at Pressly Stadium.

    Florida enters the season ranked number seven nationally.

  • Gainesville-  The Title IX hearing regarding the alleged sexual assault of a female by Gators football WR Antonio Callaway has found that Callaway was not responsible. The finding allows Callaway to continue his education at the University of Florida, and allows Callaway to continue playing football at the school.

    Callaway has been permitted to practice and use the team facilities since returning to the school for the Summer B academic session.

    Callway was the Gators best offensive player and is expected to be the first target for Gators quarterbacks this season.

    The complainant had boycotted the hearing due to the fact that Gators basketball and football booster, and Jacksonville-based attorney Jake Schickel was the hearing officer.

    Per Callaway’s attorney Huntley Johnson:

    The complainant’s advisor has gone out of his way to distort Mr. Callaway’s actions. Please allow us to level the playing field.

    This decision by the hearing officer reflects only a fraction of the evidence which is not favorable to the complainant.

    The young lady’s advisor has said, ‘they take their witnesses and go elsewhere.’ They need to be careful what they wish for.

  • Gainesville-  Another day, another hurt Gators football player.

    After having lost two players to season-ending injuries in the first two days of full padded practice, the Gators football team has lost another DB in true freshman cornerback CJ McWilliams.

    SEC Country’s Zach Abolverdi reports that the injury is a torn ACL and McWilliams was not at Thursday’s practice.

    It was reported yesterday that OL Antonio Riles is also out for the year with a torn ACL.

    Last night it broke that S Quincy Lenton underwent surgery for a broken foot that will end his freshman season before it begins.

  • Gainesville-  The American Volleyball Coaches Association coaches poll for NCAA Division One volleyball has been released.
    The University of Florida enters the season ranked number ten, receiving 1,090 points.

    The Gators finished last season at 25-7 and advanced to the elite eight before losing to Texas under a cloud of controversy.

    The 2016 Gators begin the season on August 26 against Nebraska and August 27 against Oregon. Both of these matches will be played in Eugene, Oregon.

    The Gators will play eight straight road or neutral site matches before finally playing at home on September 16 against Florida A&M. Home matches will be played at the Lemerand Athletic Center while the O’Connell Center undergoes renovations.

  • Gainesville-  The Florida football team was dealt a big blow on Wednesday after finding out that offensive lineman Antonio Riles is out for the season with a torn ACL.

    Riles, a redshirt junior, was in competition for a stating spot at the guard position and was expected to provide a veteran presence to a young group.

    Riles was hurt during practice on Monday night at the Disney lacrosse stadium. It was the Gators’ first full-pad practice.

    The UAA has announced that at head coach Jim McElwain’s next scheduled press conference (on Friday) the coach will address the injury.

  • More gold is coming home to Gainesville. Former Gators Conor Dwyer and Ryan Lochte formed half of the gold medal winning men’s 4X200M freestyle USA team.

    Dwyer led the race off and completed his split in 1:44.49 and giving nineteen year old Townley Haas a large lead. Haas finished his 200 meters at the 3:29.37 mark. Ryan Lochte, the most decorated Gator olympian competed his run at 5:15.40 before giving anchor Michael Phelps a huge lead. The USA finished in 7:00.66 almost three seconds ahead of second place Great Britian.

    For Dwyer this was his second medal of the 2016 Olympics. Dwyer earned a bronze medal in the 200M freestlye event on Monday.

    Team USA’s gold medal performance by individual splits:

    • Dwyer: 1:44.49
    • Haas: 1:44.14
    • Lochte: 1:46.03
    • Phelps: 1:45.26

    Although Lochte had the worst time in the final, he actually posted the best time in the qualifier earlier in the day as the anchor.

    Phelps earned his 21st gold medal in this event just a short time after earning his twentieth in the 200M butterfly. Phelps is the most decorated American swimmer ever and continues to dominate.

  • Tampa-  The Florida Gators soccer team played their first exhibition game against fellow SEC foe Texas A&M at Ed Radice Field in Tampa on Monday night. The game was played in three thirty minute periods rather than the customary two forty-five minute halves.
    The Gators won the contest 2-1 behind goals from senior Meggie Dougherty Howard and  sophomore Mayra Pelayo.

    In the eighth minute Texas A&M’s Emily Bates netted the first goal, giving the Aggies the 1-0 advantage. Dougherty Howard scored the equalizer goal in the 24th minute. Pelayo put the Gators on top in the 45th minute.

    The Gators face South Florida on Saturday at Corbett Stadium on the USF campus in their final preseason tune up before opening the regular season against Iowa State on August 19 in Gainesville.

    Florida enters the season ranked number 7, while Texas A&M enters ranked number 8 in the polls.

  • According to Adam Schefter on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike in the Morning radio show, Former Gator and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow will be trying out for MLB teams.
    Tebow was the Heisman trophy winner at Florida and a two time national champion.

    It was confirmed by Tebow’s agents, Jimmy Sexton and Nick Khan that Tebow will invite all 30 MLB teams to watch him work out. Tebow has been preparing for this for the last year.

    Tebow, who turns 29 later this week, was a very good baseball player in high school, and according to former Angels scout Tom Kotchman, was very nearly drafted despite his firm commitment to play football at Florida. As a junior at Nease High School, Tebow hit .494 and was an All-State player before focusing on football during his senior year.

    Tebow was drafted in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. In 2011, Tebow led the Broncos to the playoffs despite a 1-4 start and even won a playoff game in Pittsburgh.

    Tebow has a career 47.9 % completion percentage with 17 touchdowns to 9 interceptions.

    According to Schefter, Tebow has been working out as an outfielder.

  • Conor Dwyer has earned a bronze medal in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

    Dwyer set a personal best in the event at 1:45.23. Sun Yang of China earned the gold with a late push finishing at 1:44.65. South Africa’s Chad Le Clos jumped to an early lead just as he had, but seemed to fade towards the end of the 150M split. Le Clos stayed strong enough to finish three-hundredths of a second faster than Dwyer.

    Dwyer will be swimming in the 4X200M Freestyle relay on Tuesday.  The preliminary heats begins at 1:17PM. Dwyer will participate in the first heat with another former Gator, Ryan Lochte.
