• Jaden Rashada Requests Release From Florida NLI

Last month, Florida head coach Billy Napier delayed his National Signing Day press conference an hour as he waited for QB Jaden Rashada’s national letter of intent to come through.

Less than a month later, it appears the five-star quarterback will never make it to campus. Tuesday evening, 247’s Brandon Huffman reported that Rashada has filed the necessary paperwork seeking a release from the NLI that was sent to Florida in December.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/BrandonHuffman/status/1615521288843563009

Rashada’s recruitment was a whilwind that saw him surprisingly commit to Miami in June before announcing a late night flip to Florida a month before signing day.

Rashada competed in the Under Armour All-American Game in Orlando and was expected to take the ride to Gainesville and enroll early for the Spring semester. However, Rashada never made it to campus and instead went back to California. The Orlando Sentinel’s Edgar Thompson reported that there was a snag with an NIL deal worth $13 million between Rashada and The Gator Collective.

It’s been quiet from Rashada’s camp since the All-American Game despite rumors running rampant on social media.

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.

  • BSB: Gators Ranked No. 7 In D1Baseball Preseason Poll
Photo by Samuel Lewis | Getty Images

The nation’s leading authority on college baseball, D1Baseball.com, has released their preseason Top 25 poll. Unsurprisingly, the Gators are once again ranked inside the top-ten, marking the third publication to place the Gators among the nation’s elite programs.

Collegiate Baseball News (2) and Perfect Game (8) are the other publications that have announced their preseason rankings, so far.

Florida’s high ranking likely comes from the returns of RHP Brandon Sproat and battery mate, catcher BT Riopelle as well as infielders Josh Rivera and Colby Halter.

Additionally, the Gators return OF Wyatt Langford, who tied a program record with twenty-six homers in 2022. Florida also brought in RHP Hurston Waldrep from Southern Miss to compliment Sproat in the weekend pitching rotation. Waldrep was a third team All-American a year ago.

Florida opens the season February 17 with a three games series against Charleston Southern.

  • WGYM Liveblog: Equality Night ft. No. 5 Auburn at No. 2 Florida

Welcome to Equality Night! The No. 2 Gators host a top five matchup tonight, with No. 5 Auburn visiting the O-Dome.

The Tigers will come out swinging tonight, with an all-star roster that includes reigning Olympic AA champion Sunisa Lee and former NCAA VT champion and reigning SEC Co-Specialist of the Year Derrian Gobourne. As we’ve said before, though, the Gators’ roster is also chock full of stars, from reigning NCAA AA champ Trinity Thomas to long-awaited World champion Morgan Hurd.

Last week saw a few flaws for the Gators – some athletes struggled on bars, and Sloane Blakely had to stop her floor routine early out of an abundance of caution. Thankfully, all athletes were cleared by the medical staff, but Florida also has the depth to rest Blakely and anyone else that might be feeling sore after last week. Expect to see a few lineup changes, but per head coach Jenny Rowland, Thomas is expected to make her season AA debut.

Meanwhile, Auburn had some trouble on beam last weekend at Super 16 in Vegas, having to count Olivia Hollingsworth’s 9.675 after a 9.4 miss from AA stalwart Cassie Stevens. The Gators are deepest on beam, so if things are close and history repeats, expect Florida to pull ahead in rotation 3.

Lineups for tonight do look a little different! Just under 20 minutes until meet start on ESPN2.

Some tidbits to share from Gainesville, as we have several friends in the arena tonight:

Brian is hearing in the arena that Auburn is moving some lineup order around on vault, with Groth and Hollingsworth trading places.

Broadcast will be starting late, as there have been several delays with the LSU/UK meet. They don’t appear to be starting the event on ESPN+ or anywhere else yet.

They are switching to ESPN News and the app, so bear with me while I switch feeds!

I still don’t have video but this is valuable to know.

This confirms that yes, Baumann has been pulled from the vault lineup. Chloi Clark has slotted into the final spot in her place.

Still trying to get video. Sorry folks.

    Scores overall feeling reasonable tonight.

    Florida VT: Edwards 9.775, Richards 9.725, Wong 9.85, Thomas 9.925, DiCello 9.9, Clark 9.75

    Auburn UB: Sabados 9.8, Hollingsworth 9.8, Groth 9.825, Stevens 9.85, Gobourne 9.875, Lee 9.9

AFTER ONE: AUB 49.25, UF 49.2

    I finally have video!

7:55pm: Rotation 2 getting ready to start now!

Hollingsworth, Aub VT: Yfull, Clean in the air, hop back.

Richards, UB: Clean first handstand. Some leg sep in the Maloney, bail hits handstand fine. DLO stuck! A little floppy in the air, but that’s a great start for the Gators.

Groth, VT: Yfull, chest a little low on the landing, thought she was going to stick but she salutes herself into a slide back.

Blakely, UB: Solid first handstand. More Maloneys with leg sep, pak is clean. Double front dismount, overrotates it and big step forward.

7:58pm: Hubbard, VT: Y1.5, nice quick twist, big bound forward.

Nguyen, UB: Maloney to pak, some leg sep through there. Great last handstand! Floats her DLO but little slide back as she salutes.

Stevens, VT: Y1.5, big distance, hops off to the side and forward on her landing.

DiCello, UB: Lovely first handstand. Ray gets great height. Pak is solid, great handstand there as well, van Leeuwen had a little leg sep. Full in dismount and she STICKS COLD! They needed that.

8:02pm: Lee, VT: Yhalf on, tucked half off.

Thomas, UB: Maloney to pak, gorgeous. van Leeuwen is excellent. DLO like a DART into that mat. Huge!

Gobourne, VT: Y1.5, big bound forward and another step into the salute. Too much energy on that.

Wong, UB: Maloney to pak, very nice. GREAT last handstand, wow! DLO, sticks that cold too!

Wong gets a perfect 10.0!! What a moment for the sophomore!

AFTER TWO: UF 98.725, AUB 98.475

8:14pm: Hurd, BB: Front aerial to back handspring (bhs) to start, solid. Split jump to split ring, doubts herself and has a bobble, but stays on. Roundoff double full dismount, just a little shuffle of the feet.

McLaughlin, FX: 1.5 to front lay, has to really whip it around to put it to her feet. Really dramatic music and dance through here. And a complete tone change, much more sporty through this second section. Little wild on that dance series. Double pike to finish, a little deep in that lunge.

8:18pm: Blakely, BB: Front aerial to bhs series, so solid. Switch leap to switch leap half, gorgeous. Full turn is nice and calm. Gainer full off the side, just a little hop. Just fabulous!

Hollingsworth, FX: Super open full out to start, that’s incredible! Dance series is nice and precise. Front tuck through to double back, maybe a hair shy as she pops the landing forward instead of back. Strong routine nonetheless.

8:21pm: Lazzari, BB: Triple series to start off, ooh, big lean to the side, but she stays on. Switch to split, gorgeous. Lovely through the full turn and dance here. Bhs 1.5 twist dismount, looked like a little shuffle there on that landing.

Brusch, FX: Front through to double tuck, big arm swing and a few stutter steps to try and stay in bounds, which she does, but there will still be deductions. Three dance elements in her series, wolf position is clean for the last one, that’s nice to see. Double pike, a little crunched on the landing and a step forward.

8:24pm: DiCello, BB: Candle mount – she uses a springboard and faces away from the beam before springing backward to grab the beam upside down! It’s become common in elite, but it’s a fun one to see migrate to NCAA. Double wolf turn, steady. Split positions in her dance series are great. Bhs layout stepout (loso) for her series, super steady. Front aerial, also solid. BHs gainer full, stuck! DiCello is already a rock for this Gator team, you love to see it!

Stevens, FX: Front layout to Rudi (front 1.5), good control to start here. I think she gets her wolf full around but hard to see in real time. Double back to finish, solid landing there.

8:28pm: Wong, BB: Switch leap to split leap, gorgeous split positions there. Bhs loso, nice and steady. Full turn, locks her arms down, she’s so elegant. Front aerial to beat, nice quick connection there. Roundoff double full stuck cold! That will be another huge score for her!

Lee, FX: DLO to open! Very nice on the landing, not too whippy in the air. The only one who’s doing the switch ring any justice right now. 1.5 to front full, little stutter step out.

Wong earns another 10.0! Holy cow!

Thomas, BB: Split leap mount and full turn are both so elegant. One arm bhs to loso, adjusts midair to make sure her landing is dead-on. Front aerial to two feet, break at the hips but stays on. Not sure if that one is going to be worth the risk in the end. Bhs swingdown is great. Side aerial to 1.5 twist dismount, little hop forward. Just a few little things to keep working, but they do add up.

Gobourne, FX: Y’all are in for a treat on this one. Big open double tuck to start, great control on the landing. Nice and precise on her dance elements, gorgeous straddle position and wolf position is fine. Really playing to the crowd here. Front full front lay, so clean and extended in those. Double pike to finish, only takes the lunge for a second before going back into her dance to close it out. What a routine!

AFTER THREE: UF 148.2, AUB 147.825

The energy in the O-Dome is palpable even through the screen 13 hours away. I think we have a huge floor rotation incoming y’all!

    8:43pm: Rotation 4! Let’s go!

Hollingsworth, BB: Bhs loso, super steady. Switch leap to switch half to beat, switch half was maybe a little shy. Side aerial, little step to steady herself. Gainer full, hop on the landing.

Brubach, FX: Front lay to Rudi, she twists so fast! Wow! Little bouncy on her dance series but positions are nice and clean in the air. Double back to close, big lunge back, she may have gone OOB? Hard to see with the current camera angle but hoping they’ll replay it. Yup, replay shows her inside the lines, but definitely a deduction for that lunge.

8:47pm: Brusch, BB: Aerial to split jump, nice. Bhs loso, straight on. Switch to straddle 1/4, back leg does not reach 180 on the switch leap. Gainer full off the side is stuck!

Nguyen, FX: Front double full to start, into a sissone, just gorgeous! The elegance of this routine is so refreshing. In addition to her tour jete half, she also does a Y turn to full turn combination, which you rarely see in NCAA. Final combo pass is also really nice. Really love that routine for her.

8:51pm: Stevens, BB: Bhs loso, was supposed to do a triple series but did not go for the third element. Split to stag, nice. Front aerial to knee, her signature skill. Roundoff 1.5 twist, stuck! I assume she still has plenty of bonus in there to be up to the level even though she only did a two-element acro series.

Richards, FX: DLO to open, one of her better ones, front foot may have moved a little though. 1.5 twist to front full, pretty clean in her twisting, slide forward on the landing. Big Gator chomp to finish – she looks really happy with that one.

8:54pm: Groth, BB: This one is a big routine. Bhs loso bhs for her acro series, she looks surprised and thrilled! Switch to switch half, leg up balance check, ooh. Side aerial to tucked 1.5 twist, steps into her salute, don’t think they’ll call that a stick.

Wong, FX: Dos Santos to stag jump to open, WOW. Absolutely nails it. Great extension through her dance sequence and nice precise landings. Love this arrangement of Coldplay instrumental. Combination pass to close is clean and well controlled – they’re screaming for another 10 for her. I wouldn’t go quite that far, but it’ll be a great score.

8:58pm: McLaughlin, BB: Acro series is super solid. Full turn is fine. Switch to straddle 1/4, saw a little doubt there. Gainer pike off the end, little step on the landing.

Thomas, FX: Her FX debut this season! Love her opening choreo on the floor. DLO, absolutely FLIES through the air, and great control on the landing, just steps it back to the lunge. Dance sequence has great amplitude, great extension. Front full front lay, floats it down and just a single step into the lunge. Butterfly down to the floor, oversplit, and the finish – I’d be shocked if that’s not a 10.0.

9:02pm: Lee, BB: Switch to switch half, great 180 positions there. Side aerial to loso loso, little leg up bobble there. Gainer tuck full off the end, didn’t really hold it long enough to call that a stick?

Hurd, FX: So hype for this!! Baumann’s shoulder tweak kept her out, so they put Hurd in. Front lay to front full, so clean and great control. The choreography through here is just incredible – bravo Jeremy Miranda! Double pike to finish, heel goes out of bounds but Adrian Burde still looks pretty happy, and so does the team! She’s so thrilled to be out there and be competing, especially with this Avatar routine.

    FINAL: UF 197.825, AUB 197.2

Thomas takes home the vault and floor titles, while Wong takes bars, beam, and the AA. What a night for the Gators! Auburn will also take a 197.2 away score for their NQS later on this season.

I’ll be tweeting live from the press conference post-meet in a bit. Thanks for joining me tonight and bearing with me through technical difficulties! We’ll see you next week back here for the meet at Alabama.

  • WGYM Liveblog: Opening Quad Meet ft. No. 2 Florida, No. 33 West Virginia, Ball State, Lindenwood

The 2023 season has officially arrived! The Gators open their schedule tonight with a quad meet, facing off against West Virginia, Ball State, and Lindenwood. Florida is certainly favored to win, but this meet is less about that and more about setting the tone for the season and testing their initial lineup options. Head coach Jenny Rowland has already said that high-level athletes like Trinity Thomas and Kayla DiCello will be paced patiently this year, so don’t be surprised if there aren’t as many all-arounders as maybe you’d expect. We’re also all eagerly awaiting the NCAA debut of redshirt freshman Morgan Hurd, but which and how many events she’ll be competing are still unknown.

Brian is in the O-Dome tonight and I, Caroline, will be liveblogging from home – we’ll be covering all the action right here, so if you can’t tune in or make it to the arena, you can follow along here!

6:52pm: Walkouts are currently finishing up! Some tidbits from warmups from a fellow gymfan:

The arena ERUPTED into cheers for Trinity Thomas when she was introduced. Doesn’t matter what team you root for, this arena recognizes greatness.

6:58pm: Athletes are going to their events and beginning touch warmups!

    7:02pm: We have lineups!

Florida Gymnastics alumna Sydney Johnson-Scharpf commentating tonight! Very interested to see how she does.

7:04pm: Edwards, VT: Clean Yurchenko full, little slide back. Great start for her, I think she’ll likely stay in this leadoff slot for a while.

Henry, Ball State BB: Acro series and she’s fallen already, welp. Clean dance elements as she gets back on. Gainer front toss, stumbles forward but stays on. Big crossover step on her dismount.

DiCello, VT: Big floaty Yfull, another hop back. Nice clean start for her as well.

7:06pm: Baumann, VT: This isn’t Alyssa, y’all, this is sister Rachel, fifth-year transfer from Georgia! Glad to have her on the right side of this rivalry finally. Y1.5, great distance, little hop forward. Great Gator debut for her!

Another fall from Ball State on beam, that’s a shame. They’ll end up counting a fall.

West Virginia with a clean bars routine, missed who it was.

7:08: Caffey, Lindenwood FX: Great amplitude on her dance elements. Rudi was a lil close to the line. Double tuck to close, just a slide back on the landing there. That’ll be a solid routine for them.

Richards, VT: Y1.5, a little stumbly on the landing, but good distance there.

7:10pm: Wong, VT: Same vault as last year, Yurchenko half-on pike half, little low on the landing.

Another hit for WVU on bars, not sure who it was. Broadcast hasn’t really talked about them at all.

7:12pm: Thomas, VT: Beautiful Y1.5, just lays it in. Little shuffle on the landing. What a great start for her, she’s already honing that in.

Looked like a hit on FX for Lindenwood from Cooper. Solid last pass.

Brubach, VT exh: Yfull, little low on the landing, has to step forward, chest down a little.

7:14pm: Lopez, Lindenwood FX: Double tuck to open, big lunge with a slide back. A little wild on her dance series, she maybe hit 180 on her split element but the wolf element was all over the place. Punch front full to punch front layout, solid. Final combo pass was well controlled. Another solid one from Lindenwood.

Ball State just hit their series on beam. Beat to split 3/4, not quite 180 but a fun combo. I think that’s a hit for them!

7:16pm: Holmes-Hackard, WVU UB: Release was good. Pirouette full to double tuck dismount, stuck!! That should be another good one for them.

Waldo, BSU BB: We’re joining midroutine. Split to beat, strong. Punch tuck 1.5 dismount, at least one hop on the landing.

7:18pm: Irwin, WVU UB: Markelov! Love to see the unusual release there! Transition to low bar is good. Double tuck dismount, a little underrotated and buckles, little step forward to steady herself.

7:20pm: Griswold, Lin FX: We didn’t see her first pass but it sounded like a hit. Front full to front lay, very clean. Clean dance series, much better control in the wolf full position than others. Double back to finish, great control. A strong finish for Lindenwood!

Teter, BSU BB exh: Dance series was clean. Punch front full dismount, stuck! Good for her, that’s hard.

Asper, WVU UB exh: Jaeger is nice, next handstand a little short. Bail is fine. Final handstand is better. Muscles through her pirouette, double tuck, step back.

R Jones, Lin FX exh: Front double full to open, wow! Why is she not in the lineup? I just had to double check myself, but yeah they have six scores already in. Combo pass is clean in the air, a little messy on the landing. Rudi to finish, jumps it out into a lunge for some more stability.

AFTER ONE: UF 49.3, LIN 48.725, WVU 48.5, BSU 47.8

In just a few minutes!! She’ll be anchoring bars!

Getting ready for rotation 2! Honestly, I love this lineup. Missing Savannah Schoenherr, but with a broken foot, she’s in no shape to be competing right now. Hopefully she’ll heal quickly, but this is a strong group even without her.

7:32pm: Blakely, UB: Maloney to pak, lovely. Great final handstand work! STICKS her double front dismount!! That’s huge for her, what a great start for the Gators here!

WVU sticks their beam dismount, not sure who it was.

Daniels?, Lin VT: Yfull, sticks! Piked down and not much distance, but great landing.

Nguyen, UB: Maloney to pak, so clean! Good last handstand on high bar. DLO floats down, some leg sep, but sticks it! Love seeing her on this team.

Boone, Lin VT: Another Yfull, better dynamics on that one, but looked like some movement on the landing.

7:36pm: Pierson sticks her beam dismount!

Another Yfull from Lindenwood, they didn’t tell us who it was…

DiCello, UB: Great Ray! Solid handstand work. Sticks her dismount!! She is having a great night already.

7:38pm: Middleton, BSU FX: Bringing the drama with this music and choreo! Aaaand we cut away before any tumbling or dance elements.

Thomas, UB: Great opening handstand. Maloney to pak, lovely. Perfection on the low bar handstands. van Leeuwen to high bar, just NAILING these handstands. DLO dismount, legs glued together! Hard to tell if she shifted back on her dismount or if she stuck.

7:40pm: Combs, WVU BB: Cat leap, front aerial to back tuck, that’s a great combo. Full turn, solid. Dance series solid, hits 180 on both. Sticks her dismount!! A great hit for the Mountaineers.

Wong, UB: Maloney to pak to open, nice and floaty. Handstands are good, not quite as precise as Trin. van Leeuwen, solid. DLO, can’t stick it but tries to cover. They’re chanting 10s but not for long, it’s a little early in the season for that.

7:42pm: Henry, BSU FX: Double pike to close this MJ routine. Oh nooooo, she attempted a moonwalk, which did not work out for her.

Hurd, UB: Has trouble starting on the low bar and has to restart. Womp. Tries to remount, goes up to the high bar and loses her hands, flies off underneath the low bar! Oh god, that looked so scary. She looks okay, just a little shaken up.

Leigh (?), WVU BB: Cat leap switch half, little check. Gainer full off the side, solid.

Teter, BSU FX: Double tuck, big bounce back. Dance series looked fine. Front full front lay to finish, pretty clean, covered coming out of it with dance.

7:50pm: Blair, BSU FX exh: Double tuck, stumbles back so far out of it, she goes completely OOB and has to be caught by teammates. Front lay front full, sits the front full, can’t get it all the way around. A little shy of 180 on some of her dance elements. That’s rough.

AFTER TWO: UF 98.925, LIN 97.125, WVU 97.0, BSU 96.8

Hurd is supposed to lead off beam next, hopefully she can shake this off and be good to go!

8:00pm: Hurd, BB: Front aerial to bhs, good start with her series out of the way. Split to ring jump, fun combo and great shapes. Full turn, she’s a little shaky but getting through okay. Roundoff double full, a little bouncy on the landing but what a recovery for her! Teaching that short memory college gymnastics requires.

Freehling, WVU FX: Two strong passes already!

    Aaaand we cut away.

Ruthberg (?), BSU VT: Yfull, small adjustment on the landing, a little piked down.

8:02pm: Lazzari, BB: First routine back! Bhs loso loso, DEAD straight, what a queen. Switch leap to split, lovely. Front aerial, nice. Full turn, great. Bhs 1.5 stuck! WELCOME BACK ELLIE LAZZARI! Wow!

Leigh, WVU FX: Strong dance series. Looked like she didn’t fully complete her next pass, just a back layout? Front double full to finish though, wow!

DiCello, BB: Double wolf turn, nice and steady. Switch to split, lovely 180s, she really hangs in the air. Bhs loso, little adjustment but keeps it small. Front aerial, nice. Bhs gainer full, little hop on the landing. DiCello is having herself a debut!

8:07pm: Lewis, WVU FX: Rudi to layout stepout, very nice. Nice long lines in her dance elements. And we cut away. Where’s my quad box??

Richards, BB: Bhs loso, little lean. Goes for her dance series and has a big leg up bobble. Switch leap to straddle, that’s better. Bhs 1.5, hop forward. She fought for that!

8:09pm: Newsome, Lin UB: Piked Jaeger to overshoot, fine. Double front dismount, and she sits it. Bummer.

Thomas, BB: Split leap mount, gorgeous. One-arm bhs to loso, so confident there. Front aerial to two feet! That’s new this year, and very rare, well done. Beat jump to bhs swingdown, solid. Side aerial to 1.5 twist dismount, stuck! Another stellar routine for the super senior.

WVU FX: Double pike to open, big lunge out of it. Switch ring is a little crooked. 1.5 to front half to stag jump, that’s fun!

Thomas gets the perfect 10.0!! Incredible!

Wong’s routine was also excellent, they only showed the tail end.

8:14pm: Baumann, BB exh: Can’t believe this was an exhibition! Side aerial loso, nice and straight. Beat to switch side, little adjustment in the air but she did it. Roundoff 1.5 twist dismount, little step forward.

Appleget (?), Lin UB: Pretty loose throughout, especially on the overshoot, but the DLO dismount was nice, little hop out.

Pierson, WVU FX: Double lay to open! Very nice. Three-element dance series, we’ll be seeing lots of those this year I believe. Front lay front full, nice and clean in the twisting there. Would’ve wanted more performance out of her, but solid for the first routine of the year.

8:21pm: Handono (?), WVU FX exh: Rudi to loso, very clean and floaty. Tour jete half to wolf full, good positions there. Double back to finish. This music will sound familiar to Gator fans, Hundley used it a few years ago.

AFTER THREE: UF 148.35, WVU 146.2, BSU 145.8, LIN 144.6

8:29pm: We are wrapping up touch and rotation 4 is about to get underway!

Brubach, FX: Front lay to Rudi, nice and clean, though not much amplitude on her second element. Dance series is clean. Double tuck to close is solid! A great leadoff, though I think they’ll want another routine in the top six by postseason.

Irwin, WVU VT: Yhalf, step to the side.

8:32pm: Nguyen, FX: Classical music here for her routine, an unusual choice for NCAA. Front double full to split jump, wow! Switch ring to switch half are both gorgeous. Y turn combo, fantastic. 1.5 to front lay, very clean. She’s sooo elegant.

Nelson, WVU VT: Yfull, big hop back.

Fall for Ball State on bars. Ouch.

8:35pm: DiCello, FX: Front double full to open for her as well! Little crossover step coming out of it. Dance series had great amplitude and positions in the air. Single wolf turn, okay? Why is that needed? 1.5 to front full, so quick in her twisting. What a great night for her, that should win her the AA title.

WVU sits a vault, think that was Wehry.

8:38pm: Richards, FX: DLO to open, a little short but covers well. Dance series was solid, a little bouncy as she finished. 1.5 to front full, knees got way too soft there, saved it somehow. Could see on her face clearly how she surprised herself.

8:40pm: Appleget, Lin BB: Switch to split to pike jump I think, that was fun! And we cut away.

Baumann, FX: Double wolf turn, solid. 1.5 to front full, very nice! Stealing some choreography hallmarks from her sister I think, if I’m not mistaken. Switch side to straddle, does that meet the difficulty requirement?? Double pike to finish, nails it. Adrian Burde’s happy with that.

Ruthberg, BSU UB: Tkachev to overshoot, nice air on that. Shy on the handstands. Double front, just a hop in place. They needed that!

8:43pm: J Jones, Lin BB: Little bobble on the turn. Solid on the dismount though!

Blakely, FX: Love to see her anchoring this lineup! Double arabian and she sits it. Oof. Switch ring to switch half, those are nice. Double pike, another crunchy landing and ooooooh, she’s done. Will not finish. She’s standing on her own power but that’s scary. I hope she’s just being overly cautious.

    FINAL: UF 197.75, WVU 194.925, BSU 194.1, LIN 193.125

DiCello will take the AA in her debut with a 39.475! Thomas wins vault, bars, and beam with 9.925, 9.95, and 10.0 respectively, and Wong ties her for a share of bars also at 9.95. The floor title goes to Rachel Baumann in her first meet as a Gator with a 9.925.

I’ll be tweeting a few things from post-meet press, provided the Zoom link works, so be sure to follow me @mycluttereddesk, where you can also find coverage throughout the week! Thanks for joining me tonight, and we’ll be back next week with coverage of Auburn at Florida!

  • WGYM: Gator Gymnastics 2023 Season Preview

It’s here! The 2023 season has arrived! The Gators begin the season ranked second, a place they’ve gotten accustomed to over the last few years. Tonight, they begin another quest for the national championship that has eluded them since head coach Jenny Rowland took the reins in 2016. Last year, they took second – can Florida finally put all the pieces together at the right time this year?

The team will once again be led by Trinity Thomas – now in her final year of eligibility – with classmates Leah Clapper and transfer Rachel Baumann. Look for Thomas to be paced slowly again this season: Rowland has already said that they won’t be pushing her to do all-around every week. Clapper should once again contend for the anchor spot on beam, boasting a perfect 10.0 to her name, and Baumann should follow in her sister’s footsteps as a beam and floor rock.

Rachel Baumann, a transfer from Georgia, earned a perfect 10.0 on floor last year. She should be right at home in Florida’s lineup.

Unfortunately, fellow fifth-year Savannah Schoenherr, who was poised to debut a new bar routine tonight, broke her foot in a non-gymnastics-related incident earlier this week. Her status for the season remains up in the air.

Fellow upperclassmen Payton Richards, Ellie Lazzari, and transfer Victoria Nguyen will all also look to make an impact. Richards has been vaulting more confidently than ever, adding back her Yurchenko 1.5 to the Gators’ arsenal, and Nguyen brings elegant long lines and effortless grace to bars and beam. Lazzari will be returning slowly from injury – expect her on beam first, but she may add back more events over the course of the season.

Transfer Victoria Nguyen showed off the prowess she’ll bring to the bars and beam lineups during Hype Night earlier in preseason!

Sophomores Sloane Blakely, Bri Edwards, Riley McCusker, and Leanne Wong all regularly made lineups last season, but competition is stronger this year, even if that seems impossible based on the depth of the 2022 team. Blakely and Wong will contend for all four events, with both bringing valuable 10.0 starts to the vault lineup and strong tumbling on floor. Blakely will likely be a regular on beam as well with her steady composure, and Wong will almost certainly co-anchor the bars lineup with Thomas. McCusker will once again make her case for both bars and beam and may add back other events as she continues to strengthen her ankle after injury in 2021, and Edwards is a convincing choice for a clean vault if not all of the 10.0 start options are ready to go.

Riley McCusker performed a few solid exhibition routines on BB last year – can she crack the incredibly deep lineup this season?

Freshmen Lori Brubach and Kayla DiCello may also make appearances tonight, with DiCello the more likely of the two as a world AA medalist. Her bars and floor will be great assets to the Gators, but Rowland has indicated her pacing will be slower as well. The biggest story tonight, though, is the triumphant NCAA debut of Morgan Hurd! After spending a year rehabbing yet another surgery, Hurd will join her team on the floor competition-ready this season, with her likeliest events being beam and floor.

Hurd showed strong performances on three events at Hype Night. We can’t wait to finally see her NCAA debut, hopefully tonight!

Could this finally be the year? It’s hard to say, but odds look good that Florida will once again go far this season. It all starts tonight at 6:45pm in the O-Dome or 7pm on SECN+, but if you can’t make it, we’ll be liveblogging right here on ChompTalk. See you then!

  • MBB: Gators’ Comeback Bid Falls Just Short vs Texas A&M
Photo by James Gilbert | Getty Images

The Florida Gators were searching for the first SEC win of head coach Todd Golden’s career. Trailing 65-63 with :7 seconds to play, point guard Trey Bonham was called for a questionable offensive foul that essentially ended the contest in Texas A&M’s favor.

With the loss, the Gators fall to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Florida actually opened the game with a 1-0 lead prior to the tipoff. Texas A&M arrived without their jerseys, forcing a nine minute delay to the game and setting up a technical foul free-throw.

The momentum didn’t carry over for long, though. Entering halftime, Florida trailed the Aggies 34-23. The Gators made just nine shots from the floor and committed just as many turnovers in the opening period of play.

Florida came out of the break quick, starting with a 8-0 run that closed the gap to 34-31. After back and forth action throughout the second half, the Gators finally took their first lead since early in the first half with 5:49 remaining (54-53).

After a pair of free throws by Colin Castleton with 1:24 remaining cut the deficit to two, the Florida big man got a steal and took it to the basket himself to even the score at 63.

TAMU took the lead as Wade Taylor hit a jumper with :42 seconds left in regulation. A made free-throw put the Aggies ahead by the final of 66-63.

Statistically, Florida was the better team in this game. Florida shot a higher percentage from the floor, beyond the arc, and at the free-throw line and even grabbed one rebound more than the Aggies. The Gators, however, turned the ball over twenty times which A&M turned into 21 points.

Bonham led Florida with 21 points on the night on 8-13 from the field and 4-7 from three-point range. Castleton was the only other double-digit scorer, finishing with 14 points and five boards.

The Gators will have a quick turnaround when they host Georgia Saturday. The game will feature the return of former Florida head coach Mike White, who accepted the Georgia job after last season. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM tip.

  • Memphis DT Cam’Ron Jackson Commits to Gators

With the amount of attrition that the Florida Gators roster has seen over the last month, it was inevitable that the Gators would become big players in the NCAA’s transfer portal.

After signing twenty prospects out of high school and adding two transfers during the early signing period, Florida has added a big body to a major position of need. Cam’Ron Jackson made his commitment via social media Friday evening.

Jackson entered the portal just one day earlier. Florida made contact immediately.

As a redshirt sophomore with the Memphis Tigers, Jackson racked up 41 tackles, 2.5 for loss, and a sack.

The 6’6, 300 lb defensive lineman will be visiting the UF campus for the weekend of January 6. He has cancelled a visit with Miami.

Jackson joins former Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz and Louisville DL Caleb Banks transferring into the program.

The Florida Gators are in need of bodies in the quarterback room. Starting QB Anthony Richardson declared for the 2023 NFL Draft and backup Jalen Kitna’s arrest made the position group quite light over the last month.

After looking at several players from the transfer portal at the position, the Gators seem to have landed on Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz, according to G. Allan Taylor of The Athletic.

Mertz was a three year starter at Wisconsin before announcing his intention to transfer on December 4. Wisconsin fired his head coach, Paul Chryst, midway through the 2022 season.

While with the Badgers, Mertz redshirted his freshman year in 2019, but was the team’s starter over the last three years. His career completion percentage while at Wisconsin was 59.5%. He threw 38 touchdowns and 26 interceptions over the last three years.

The 6’3 signal caller technically has two years of eligibility due to the Covid rules from 2020.

  • VB: Gators Fall to Panthers And Out of NCAA Tournament

The Gators’ hopes of winning the 2022 National Collegiate Athletic Association Volleyball Championship are no more.

The Florida Gators lost to the Pittsburgh Panthers (25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22) Thursday to be eliminated from the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.

As the match got started, it became clear Florida had a real test in front of it. A serve by Florida sophomore outside hitter Merritt Beason ended with a kill by graduate student right side Courtney Buzzerio.

The Gators evened the score, but Pittsburgh scored two more — Buzzerio and senior middle blocker Chiamaka Nwokolo each tallied kills — to take back the score. However a 7-2 Florida run put the lower seed on top, 8-5.

Each team registered two-point runs, and a match of runs developed. The Panthers then scored four in a row and regained the lead, 11-10.

The Gators and Panthers went back and forth, and Pitt found itself with a 16-14 lead. Again, Florida scored back-to-back points, and Pitt responded doing the same thing.

Pittsburgh answered with three in a row, but a four-point run by Florida moved it within one, 21-20. The Panthers threw the last punch and ended the set with four straight points to win the first set, 25-20, capped off by a double contact called against freshman setter Alexis Stucky.

Buzzerio — who ended with 19 kills — proved why she is considered a top player in the nation. She found six kills on a .400% hitting percentage.

However, senior outside hitter Marina Markova — who led the team with 15 kills — put up similar numbers for the Gators. She led the team with five kills on a .500% hitting percentage. Beason was just as efficient with four kills.

The teams’ numbers looked similar, but Florida five service errors — Pittsburgh had only one — was detrimental for the team.

The second set started, and Pitt got off to a quick start. It scored four of the first five points. However, the Gators responded promptly with a three-point run to tie the set at four.

Florida continued its momentum on its way to a 8-6 lead, with Beason and Markova both scoring kills. Pitt turned around and stole the Gators’ momentum right back.

It won eight of nine serves to take a five-point, 14-9 lead. The teams continuously exchanged blows as the set moved along.

The Gators found themselves down by five, 23-18, but a Florida run had them within striking distance. Buzzerio’s strike was out, and junior outside hitter Sofia Victoria tallied back-to-back kills to bring her team within two, 23-21.

Graduate student middle blocker Serena Gray sent the ball to the back of the court. It was originally called out, but a review saw the call overturned to give the Panthers a 24-21 lead instead of a tied set.

A block assist by Gray and Buzzerio ended the set, 25-21, to give Pitt a 2-0 match lead. Florida lost two close sets after late runs by Pittsburgh with a third set on deck.

The third set came underway, and Pitt used the same blueprint from the prior set. It started with a 4-1 lead, and Florida fought back to take the lead.

The Gators and Panthers went back and forth and the set was eventually tied at nine. Then, Florida got hot.

It scored three in a row. Pitt got a kill. And Florida went on a four-point run to take a 16-10 lead.

The teams exchanged blows, and at 22-16, the Gators still held a six-point lead. Florida scored three of the last four points, and sophomore middle blocker Gabrielle Essix punched the ball into the ground to give the team the third-set victory, 25-17.

Florida trailed 2-1 and had only been outscored by two points through the first three sets.

For the third set in a row, the Gators were down 4-1 to start the set. And as it had been doing, it climbed back and tied the frame at seven.

Florida and Pittsburgh split the next six points. With the set tied at 10, the Panthers went on a four-point run to take the lead. After kills by Beason, Essix and Markova, the Gators were within two, 15-13.

The teams kept battling, and Florida found itself one point away from being eliminated from the tournament, 24-20. Markova scored two in a row, but a Buzzerio kill ended the Gators’ season.

  • Redshirt Freshman QB Jack Miller To Start Las Vegas Bowl For Gators
Photo by Chris Leduc | Getty Images

Florida redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Miller is set to start his first collegiate game in the team’s upcoming Las Vegas Bowl on December 17, head coach Billy Napier confirmed Thursday.

Napier’s announcement comes just days after starter Anthony Richardson declared for the 2023 NFL Draft and backup Jalen Kitna’s arrest.

Miller transferred to Florida from Ohio State in December 2021 following Billy Napier’s arrival into the program.

As a freshman in Columbus in 2021, Miller played in four games, completing 7-14 passes for 101 yards.

The 6’3 pocket passer was a four-star prospect out of Chaparral in Scottsdale, AZ and set the state passing record while in high school.

Florida will face Oregon State in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl on December 17. The game will kick off at 2:30 PM and air live on ESPN.
